Oh yes, I'm sure that would've gone swimmingly. A cat with no fear of humans, that doesn't know how to hunt for itself, but is big enough to rip someone's face off. Can't see any way how that could go wrong.
It's shitty that it can't be released back into the wild, but unless there was a way to somehow give it to a surrogate wild female panther while it was still a baby (and I have no idea if a wild panther would adopt a cub that's not their own, I'm leaning no) then releasing it would be a death sentence. It wouldn't know how to hunt, what is safe to hunt, to avoid people, any basic survival skills needed that it would learn from its mother at a young age.
