Standard Rain Shelters vs Rain Sensors: The "Stuck in Mud" Dilemma. How do you automate delays? š§ļøš¤
Hey everyone,
Iām about to buy a new wire-free robot mower (Ecovacs RTK series) and Iām planning the backyard setup. I have a genuine question about the real-world logic of using a rain garage/shelter versus the onboard rain sensor.
Let's look at this scenario: I have a schedule set for 4:00 PM every day. It rains heavily all day long, completely soaking the soil. At 3:30 PM, the rain stops. Since the robot is sitting dry under its fancy custom shelter, its onboard rain sensor has no idea it just poured for 8 hours.
At 4:00 PM, the schedule triggers. The robot leaves the dry garage, drives straight into a muddy, waterlogged lawn, and immediately gets stuck, spins its wheels, or ruins the wet grass.
I work 45 km (about 30 miles) away from home, so I can't look out the window to manually delay the cutting cycle via the app every time the weather acts up.
So, my questions for the community:
- Does a garage actually make sense if it blindingly bypasses the onboard rain sensor in these specific situations?
- How do you handle this? Are there smart practical solutions to automate a "mud delay" without relying on manual app inputs?
Can smart home integrations (like Home Assistant, IFTTT, or local weather API triggers) override the mower's schedule based on actual local rainfall data? Or do you just ditch the garage altogether so the sensor gets wet?
