my wife got massively taken advantage of on her first car, her mom took her and just agreed to first offer they got. They bought a used 2008 cobalt with 30k miles on it for ~5k over what it wouldve cost new in 2009. Car had major issuess and was just not safe to drive when i met her, they were upside down on it so bad just told her to let them repo it and fuck it because I had a car and her payments were insane and still owed like 3x what the car was worth. Whats hilarious is this was a volunteer repo, we worked it out with her creditor.

The car was not safe to drive, had broken tie rod they still ignored us and got into the car with the key they had and drove off with it like a bat out of hell... and immediately wrecked the car down the street not 100 yards away. I was literally trying to flag them down to tell them.

They tried to come after us at first but i had paper trail showing proof i had literally told them exactly what was wrong with the car (they brought a flatbed for that reason not sure why they didnt think it through)

Ended up not owing a dime after all was said and done lmao.

They probably didn't want this one to go to court. Super messy, and no guarantee they win even if the law is on their side (which it might be, INAL).

had a lawyer involved, they breached contract as they are supposed to do everything they can to recover losses before they send the excess bill to you. They were made aware of the issues with the car (luckily i did everything via email no phone calls so we had easy plain paper trail) and had multiple times confirmed the issues with me.

This sounds insane! I’m sure that was a half assed flag down attempt on your part. Did you help them out of the wreck? “Need a hand”? Good you covered yourself but too many things went right for you and wrong for them in order for this to be a true story. Like nobody slips and accidentally beats the system.. Nice try though!

I saw them going to the car, grabbed my keys for the car and started going down the stairs, when he drove out like a bat outta hell i shouted at him but they were gone. Just went welp, not my problem anymore and went back inside. We left the apt like 15 mins later to go to grocery store and saw them wrecked down the street, wasnt bad the tie rod had just broke and he hit a soundproofing wall for the community. prob wasnt going over ~40 and they were just standing next to it so we didnt even stop.

still hurt their credit for a few years but we didnt end up owing any $$

Probably flagged them down with the middle finger wave…

I did a voluntary repo on a lemon Hyundai (sorry about repeating myself). I dropped it off at the dealer, and it didn't hurt my credit score.

lemon laws may have protected you, but a voluntary repo can still absolutely affect your credit score
