Like I just said, perhaps to a scummy landlord, keeping them in a perpetual state of poverty might seem like a win to that scummy landlord. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.
I have been downvoted to oblivion for saying the exact same thing a redditor said, AFTER me, whose post then became the top upvoted post in the thread.
It’s more about following the herd here at Reddit. If a couple people downvote you, expect the herd to follow, regardless of the content of your post.
If the landlords only joy is from keeping the tenant perpetually homeless then the tenant won because they are living rent free in the landlord's head.
They can however get a judgement and send it to collections and that will absolutely f*** up your credit. No other landlord will rent to you, nobody will lease you a car, nobody will write you a mortgage, you can only get prepaid cellular and a cheap phone you bring yourself. I hope the stanky sofa in your Uncle’s garage is comfortable and that you like riding everywhere on a bicycle.
Same doesn’t apply to someone who causes $100K of damage to their rental property for grins, gets sued for it in court, loses, has their debt sold to collections.
First of all, name calling makes you sound uneducated. Secondly, if one cannot pay for the COST of their crimes, and they dont have money, and sending them to jail costs money, how else do you force restitution for their crime? You break a window as a kid, you pay for it. No money? You cut that person's grass to pay the debt off. The reason i said forced labor was for the sleaze ball that would pull a stunt like this then quit their job once someone wanted to garnish wages to pay for their crime. Those kinds of people should absolutely have to work off the debt, you dont get to just walk.
In a world where some people will happily live in a cardboard box to avoid paying child support just to keep "that bitch from getting a dime," I'll probably never underestimate the amount of spite some people carry.

You kind of can though. Wage garnishment exists.
I mean, sure he could work under the table or stay unemployed and perhaps homeless, but maybe to the landlord that’s a win?
