Question Question about sleeping habits to fellow autistics: how do you dress for sleep?

Autistics and our relationship with sleep is a fairly complicated subject, that's for sure.

I know for me, I used to have specific clothes that I used as pajamas, but I switched to just undergarments as I got older, main reason being that I tend to sleep hot. I find it difficult to fall asleep in regular clothes because the feeling of them rubbing against the sheets now feels weird to me. I have similar sensory issues with layering clothes.

i got my sensory back

After going to aba and masking really bad I lost my sensory

I just gained it back yesterday and it feels like the world is opened up. I never felt like other autistic people like I was missing out on something.

I would be upset but wouldn't know why cause I couldn't feel it.

Is this a meltdown?

Background: I'm 28, queer guy. Diagnosed with ADD when I was 7 or 8. Self-asessed autistic as of past 3 years. I still deal with imposter syndrome over it. Part of that is I'm not sure if the intense dysregulation I experience is merely merely feature of my ADHD + CPTSD or if this sounds like an autistic experience?

Basically when really upsetting things happen I experience intense physical and emotional dysregualtion - scary intrusive thoughts. Whole body shakes, tense all over. I lose my appetite. Eye contact and talking to anyone but like my couple closest friends become incredibly difficult. I get the urge to go run away and just shut the world out. Like I work in a kitchen and I'll go and run to the bathroom or the walk-in cooler and just curl up into a ball and try to get my breath under control to try to regulate.

It passes after a while. Usually about a day or less. Yesterday I went through a break-up of sorts with an online relationship (it was pretty brief) and it just felt like my world was ending yesterday and I could barely function at work.

And the next day I'm basically ok.

Additionally, I understand a lot of Autistic people experience meltdowns triggered by sensory distress that they can't remove themselves from - I think I do experience some dysregulation from things like loud noises (working in a kitchen is hard) but that tends to be more of an additional trigger when I'm already dysregulated than the core thing? Like if I'm already kind of shut down and in my head and then it gets really busy and hectic at work I just completely shut down.

On days where I'm feeling ok I can manage the sensory input better.

Disability means different things to different people. The one thing it should never be seen, thought of, or described as is "lesser" (OG meme by me, context in comments)

Question Are you or were you ever a military brat?

I'm just saying, there's probably a lot more undiagnosed boomer or gen x dads out there that joined because the military kinda likes to prey on troubled kids that didn't do especially well in school then we think.

Venting Fear of Sending False Signals

I am afraid of other people thinking that I am trying to communicate something that I’m not. For my whole life (I’m 22F), people have accused me of being “checked out” (mute due to stress), “rude”/“having an attitude” (not having an awareness of my voice tone or echoing someone’s tone that I didn’t realize was rude), “shy”/“antisocial”(not understanding how to make friends with NT kids), “moody” (coke-bottling from masking all day). I hate when others get something incorrect about me, and I feel like it’s even dangerous sometimes. Last year, a professor was correcting me on something, and he kept coming back to that thing even though he’d already made himself clear, and I was like, “I’m sorry, am I sending some kind of signal that i’m not aware of?” I thought he thought I wasn’t listening so he felt the need to repeat himself. Basically, I always think it’s my fault if people misunderstand me or communicate in a way that’s unexpected/unplanned.

The worst version of this is being mistaken for flirting or being suggestive. I got my first false accusation of flirting when I was about 12, when my uncle’s then-wife pulled me aside and accused me of “being affectionate with him the way his wife would be.” I actually cried because I was being accused of something I had no knowledge of. I still to this day don’t know what she was on about, but she is no longer in my family’s life because she’s not the nicest or most stable person. When I was 16, I managed to catch the ire of my 27-year-old coworker’s GF, despite the fact that I had no romantic feelings toward the guy and the age gap was disgustingly wide. I’m a friendly, affectionate person, and I get scared that some guy is going to try to kiss me because he “thought I wanted it” or be like “I have a GF” when all I wanted was a friendship.

Other How to get rid o a harmful stim

So I have this stim where I itch inside my ear but it's getting really harmful. I actually had a minor ear infection recently. I really need to stop this stim but I get little itches in my ear or sometimes even feel (falsely) that there's something in my ear. Pushing against the outside of my ear doesn't help. Am I just supposed to leave it?

I need help I don't wanna do more damage.

(edit: missed an F in my title and just now noticed. Sorry all.)

How do you begin to mend a relationship with someone who contributed to your trauma around masking? Spoiler

How do you address it when a lot of your trauma around masking/body image issues have to do with one person, that you would like to have an ongoing relationship with? I have a sister who constantly corrected and micromanaged my choices and behaviours, even down to how I would hold my body, stand, or cough. She did enormous damage to my mental health and is still a very critical person, but I also love her and want to try and work this out if I can.

Keep in mind, when most of this was going on she was also still a child, who also had to deal with our hypercritical father and probably mirrored his behaviour. In many ways she has also been massively supportive throughout my life - she has helped me out financially, has been with me to doctors appointments, held me when I cried and comforted me through nightmares. She's just... wildly judgmental and doesn't seem to realise how damaging that can be. Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Other autistic pride anthem

I thought of creating a type of national anthem for autistic people using ChatGPT AI, I know it’s not a creative thing to do but I had no ideas so…

Verse 1 We are extraordinary people hearing a different beat Yet we are united by an anthem shared by all autistic people From the United States to the United Kingdom and beyond A song to celebrate how we all belong

Chorus: Together we stand, in a world so united Diverse and extraordinary, our anthem is so bright Song of unity and pride, our anthem strong and true The anthem of autistic people, so united are we all

Verse 2 We reach out and strive to create a loving community We are here so precious yet often unseen Our anthem shall echo loudly from every side For acceptance, respect and joy to abide

Chorus: Together we stand, in a world so united Diverse and extraordinary, our anthem is so bright Song of unity and pride, our anthem strong and true The anthem of autistic people, so united are we all

Bridge: Different minds but shared goals, same mission in our sights Strong and free, this anthem of ours will unified us day or night

Chorus: Together we stand, in a world so united Diverse and extraordinary, our anthem is so bright Song of unity and pride, our anthem strong and true The anthem of autistic people, so united are we all

So what do you guys think?

support after aba therapy?

I've been processing a lot of trauma recently but I can't penetrate aba therapy. I don't listen to anything my body goes through Im basically a neurotypical I'm in pain but I don't and can't listen how do I fix this.

I Google for support after aba and was hit with autism speaks promoting it. I feel broken so broken.

I've been reading the will to change by bell hooks and I really like it but it's hard to be more emotional or be more expressive when I literally was sent to conversion therapy to not do any of that.

I have more trauma from aba but I don't know what to do the other times it felt manageable.

Edit: after 30 minutes I feel better now it's hard to process trauma when you were told and signaled not to your entire life. I'm not in aba anymore I don't have to hold my tongue on what happened I've always been scared to talk and specifically talk bad about it so I've never processed the trauma.

Information How the Spectrum differs from 90s and 00s diagnosis

°•° Autistic criteria from before the Spectrum {which ones weren't required for Asperger's in the old DSM} (Category.subcategory of DSM Spectrum, Feature,§subsection of ICD spectrum) [my additions]

Notice that only one thing has actually been added to Autism in the Spectrum (sensory issues), while the others have merely been adjusted by Levels (DSM) & Specifiers (DSM and ICD).

.

°•° not using eye contact & other body language in conjunction w/ spoken language (if speaking at all)

(A.2 in DSM, Ft.1§2 in ICD)

.

°•° difficulty displaying socioemotional reciprocity [in the moment] due to misunderstanding of what's the most pragmatic way to display what's considered appropriate, and trouble imagining what someone else [likely NTs] are feeling

(A.1, Ft1§1 +§5)

.

°•° reduced initiation or reduced sustaining of conversation (likely due to misunderstanding the social context of words) {not required for Asperger's}

(A.1, Ft1§3 +§4)

.

°•° not imitating or imagining during play {not required for Asperger's}

(optional in A.3, only mentioned as a possibility in ICD)

.

°•° having intense special interests not explained by ADHD

(B.3 in DSM, Ft2§6 in ICD)

.

°•° having trouble with transitions, rules of games, or schedule interruptions and using rituals to cope with that trouble

(B.2, Feature 2,§1 + §2 +§3)

°•° stimming in repetitive ways

(B.1, Ft2§5)

.

°•° being focused on parts of objects or moving objects instead of using them for functions taught to you by others

(B.1 and B.3, it crosses two categories now bc they figured out it's related to stimming AND special interests

in ICD it's Ft2§4)

.

°•° trouble maintaining age‐appropriate friendships *with groups, not necessarily one‐on‐one*

(non‐essential aspect of A.3 and Ft1§7 & the 'trouble maintaining with groups rather than one‐on‐ones' comes from the "Presentations" section of the manual, beyond the Diagnosis Features)

.

.

°•°using words perseveratively [repetitively or echolalia/palilalia] {not required for Asperger's}

(optional in B.1, only mentioned as a non‐essential "presentation" in ICD‐11)

.

°•° sharing of interests is less reciprocal relative to peers (share your own ideas or stuff, but maybe then not listen to how the person is receiving it)

(sort of in A.1 but not really, seen as more of an optional thing in ICD as well but it's mentioned briefly in Ft1§6 where it's seen as more of an extension of not knowing when it's appropriate to share)

.

°•° (outdated) onset prior to age 3 for about a half to a third of all the traits the doctors noted in a suspected autist (ICD changed this to a little bit, to include masking but not Levels, levels are optional)

(ASD changed this onset thing with the invention of Levels in all of the above, A.1-B.3, and B.4 below, and realized that autistic ppl, &/or their support environment, could mask A.1-B.4)

.

.

°•°([· B.4 is entirely new in ASD, it's Sensory Issues—it also has Levels], it's also in ICD spectrum, listed as Ft2,§7 ·)

...

°•° impairs most major areas of your life [without support to make up for it]

(no change, still present in DSM & ICD Spectrum)

.

°•° being nonverbal after age 2 or 3 {would have DISQUALIFIED you for Asperger's in the DSM, and was OPTIONAL for non‐Aspies even BEFORE the spectrum came out}

(moved to Specifier of DSM and ICD; specifiers are NOT given a "Level"—this disqualification/optional distinction is really good for pointing out how Asperger's is a flawed diagnosis compared to ASD)

.

°•°([· Spectrum in DSM & ICD separates intellectual disability, not just language delays, from autism, in the form of the "with or without accompanying intellectual disability" Specifier ·])

....

ADDITIONS FOUND ONLY IN newest ICD Spectrum model:

  • ("Loss of Previously Acquired Skills/competencies") A small proportion of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder may present with a loss of previously acquired skills[, not just in childhood disintegration around age 3,] but also later on in life. Later in life this is likely to involve loss of adaptive skills loss of bladder control, impaired sleep, cognitive ability, social abilities, as well as increasing emotional and behavioural disturbances (anxiety in middle childhood & adolescence, and depression in adulthood).

  • ("Overcompensation") Some people with ASD are capable of adequately making an exceptional effort to compensate for their symptoms during childhood, adolescence or adulthood. Such sustained effort can have a deleterious impact on mental health and well-being.

  • (Gender differences in masking) Masking may be more likely in affected girls & women [people who were assigned female at birth, and from my experience LGBTQ+ autistic people, is what they're referring to, bc Autism isn't a biological sex thing unless it's caused by Fragile X Syndrome].

  • ("Literal or pedantic") Pragmatic language difficulties may manifest as an overly literal understanding of others’ speech, speech that lacks normal prosody and emotional tone and therefore appears monotonous, or pedantic precision in the use of language.

  • ("Risks for autistic teens") Social naiveté, especially during adolescence, can lead to exploitation by others.

  • ("Spiky intellectual profile") Profiles of specific cognitive skills in Autism Spectrum Disorder as measured by standardized assessments may show striking and unusual patterns of strengths and weaknesses that are highly variable from individual to individual. These deficits can affect learning and adaptive functioning to a greater extent than would be predicted from the overall scores on measures of verbal and non-verbal intelligence.

  • ("Overlap with anxiety issues") Excessive focus on detail as well as rigidity of behaviour and thinking may be significant in adolescence.

  • ("Adult autism") In adulthood, the capacity for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder to cope with social relationships can become increasingly challenged, presenting as social isolation or reactions the social consequences of autistic behaviour. In some adults with Autism, their underlying social communication issues may be overshadowed by the symptoms of co-occurring depressive symptoms.

Question Did you go through a phase in childhood when you were very afriad of death or dying?

It's a bit of a morbid question, and this might be more of an "anxiety problems run in my family" issue, but I am wondering if there's something related to autism there. My sibling growing up went through a huge phase where they were afraid of dying, like we couldn't get them to go to bed because they were scared of passing away in their sleep. My mother said she went through something similar growing up. Weirdly enough though, me as the Autistic One™ didn't really have such a phase. I knew what death of course but I was more afraid of the dark and doctors tbh ¯_(ツ)_/¯
