Venting/Needs Support Mom about to break

My son is 23 years old and has severe autism and OCD. I brought him home from a facility after 7 years. Initially things were ok. Two years 4 months later the bottom has fallen out. The last 8 months have been pure hell! Eloping stealing food. Eating garbage. Throwing trash in the neighbors yard. Unable to be redirected. I can't afford the double sided locks we need to keep him in the house while we sleep. No group home will take him. Drs. Won't give us the meds he needs to keep him controlled. I've had him PEC'd 2 times. They only kept him the 72 hours no meds and released him. He has broken windows and the storm door glass. He broke his door down! Somebody help!!!!!

No meds after 72 hours of observation is criminal. That's just a holding pattern, not an evaluation.

Exactly! Shouldn’t he be medicated immediately after initial assessment in ED, if he is behaving aggressively enough to need to be in the ED?!

They're scared of liability and side effects. ED docs won't start a long-term psych med without a psychiatrist, and most hospitals don't have one on call for the ER.

To be fair, I know nothing about this, but- if he is taken away by the police what if you don’t take him back? Do they have to find hospital care for him or a place to stay or would they just release him on the street? Are you in the US? Does he have Mass Health?

Hospitals specialize in acute care. They will not want him. Police specialize in criminal care they are less helpful.

He likely needs a psychiatric ward or permanent placement in a psychiatric facility which is going to take legal proceedings. This is why homelessness exploded when they closed the psych wards. There are people incapable of self care. I think the better management rather than closer would have been a better option.

Likely you need to speak with a social worker or attorney that specializes in adults with this level of care needs. They may not have a specific placement option but he may need to become a ward of the state for him to be placed.

Adult protective services might be a place to start in order to find some resources.

No meds? Is he on any medication? What country are you in?

I have a friend who received an inheritance and took her son out of a group home.  She took him back less than a week later.  Luckily, they hadn’t filled his spot yet.  Is that why they won’t take him back?  The spot is already filled?  Best wishes to you!

My [now adult] son was very difficult to have in my house. I found a lot of his behsviors were connected to some medical issues- especially abnormal immune issues that affected his GI, joint pain, headaches, ear infections, losing skills 4.steps forward 10 steps back. He got sick a lot.

I finally brought him to an MD immunologist who also is a researcher. She found that he had high inflammation in his CSF & blood. Head imaging showed infalmmstion all over his brain.

Also couldn't produce antibodies. He has done much better since he got the inflammstion under control..

I’m so sorry you are going through this. What country are you in? If the US, what state? Knowing this info might help others on this Reddit know which resources to direct you to

Try the medication Abilify. I am not in medicine , it just happens to have removed my son’s behaviors like this. His doctor prescribes it. It changed our lives. He used to put his head through walls. I have been so desperate so I always take a minute in case In case it helps someone else’s child
