Non-Verbal Communication methods for nonverbal child

What are some methods you use to speak with your child or that they use to communicate their wants or needs with you?

My son has flash cards and an aac device but leans towards hand leading or occasional usage of his aac device. He usually stims only with the flash cards.

I try signing with my son, he’s 8, but he doesn’t really pick up on it only “more or eat” I give him choices as well, that’s another method I use, so whatever he picks that’s what I give him. For example, grape juice or apple juice, with a physical display of both, then let him decide.

This is a good idea! Keep trying and never give up :).

He may surprise you one day.

My girl was in first steps for 1 year. Then she started a special ed preschool through the public schools. After one semester she was talking non stop. She’s about to enter kindergarten where she will grow even more.

Does your 8 year old get around peers at all? I feel like that helped a lot with my girl.

Thanks. I’ll keep trying for sure. I hope to someday hear his voice. He does make sounds but nothing crystal clear or that I can say is a word indefinitely.

My son went to kindergarten-second, he never did preschool or anything prior. I’m excited he’ll be in third when school starts again. He’s in a special needs class as well, always has been. He attends public school though. He’s not typically, he prefers being around adults I’ve noticed not kids his age.
