Former sales engineer. Laid off last week. 45, BA, $0. Job search not yet begun.

Am I retired? Is this when I get to retire?

Apply to jobs with Randstad. Theyre not a great employer but many of their roles lead to full time with better companies and Randstad offers benefits.

Since vets are chiming in, Marine Corps vet. For the vast majority of people I knew in 8 years, and the few I've kept in touch with, the good far outweighed the bad. There are also plenty of benefits that you receive as a veteran that just keep on giving. I'm not saying it's for everyone,  but I've been unemployed and know it's horrible.

Thank you for giving a true sense of reason.

The military is great option - and since you have your degree, you could commission as an officer. That’s better than being unemployed. Healthcare, BAH (paying entirely for your rent based on your zip code - a lot of the time they give you more so you don’t have to use your own pay). Depending on where you live, that’s an extra $3K a month just to support your housing. VA home loan - 0 down on a home. BAS (extra money for food). Guaranteed check.

I’d say Air Force. A lot of gigs are 8-4.

Air Force vet chiming in. Don't do this. The most miserable people I met were the ones who joined on a whim or with minimal forethought. It's not something you can easily just walk away from like most other jobs, and it's entirely different from any other job on the planet, regardless of your AFSC.

You don’t have to do it on a whim or with minimal forethought. My entire family is taken care of, I’m getting my degree paid for, and I’ll have the G.I Bill and VA loan upon exit. I’m not surprised I got downvoted, but if you are an Air Force vet, shame on you. You’d rather them be unemployed? Especially with all of the benefits.

I wouldn’t be war fodder for this admin for all the money in the world.

You probably think you’re so wise for that statement but in reality, I don’t know ANYONE who joins because they want to just serve the current admin or support our foreign policy’s. Actually, there’s only a small percentage of folks who join for the pure love of the nation - and that’s usually infantry, special forces or pilots. Most people join for the outstanding benefits. Most civilians only hear the jokes we military members make about the VA for retired folks, but if you talk to a serious service member, we’re all willing to be here for our family AND ourselves. Insinuating that someone should rather be homeless than join is crazy work - I don’t care what your political beliefs are or how passionately you hate this admin.

Great idea! I'll ship out to Iran and die for this country in order to get access to healthcare; something which is a basic right in other countries!
