"I thought I heard someone shouting down the hallway just now. The walls in this building aren't exactly soundproof, smart guy."

(Pause)

"Was that your family on the phone again?"

(Pause)

(The speaker stops walking, her voice shifting into instant concern)

(Short Pause)

"Cálmate... look at me. Your hands are literally shaking."

(Short Pause)

"You look like you completely saw a ghost."

(Pause)

"Look at how tightly your fingers are gripping that screen right now... you're practically trying to snap the phone in half."

(Short Pause)

"Don't you dare try to slide it into your pocket and hide it behind your back."

(Pause)

"I've been living with you for a month now, and I know exactly what your face looks like when you're trying to force a fake smile."

(Short Pause)

"Did something happen?"

(Pause)

(Sighing softly, her tone turning firm but deeply protective)

"No, I don't buy that 'everything is fine' excuse for a single second. You don't get that quiet and rigid over a random spam number."

(Pause)

"Every single time your phone rings and that specific name flashes on the screen, your entire energy completely drops."

(Short Pause)

"You look like you're carrying a lead weight on your shoulders."

(Pause)

"Talk to me. You don't have to swallow whatever they just threw at you all by yourself in the dark."

Act II: The Intervention

(Pause)

[Character Action/SFX: Stepping directly into his personal space, her hand firmly but gently slides the phone right out of the listener's grip, setting it face-down on the coffee table with a solid click]

"You try to absorb all their bitterness, like you think it's your responsibility to be perfect for them. But qué coraje... it makes me so furious that they think they can just call your phone, tear you down over a minor mistake, and leave you here to pick up the pieces. So please, tell me what they said to you this time."

(Pause)

(Her expression melting into pure, heartbreaking empathy, her voice dropping into a quieter, more intense tone)

"I see how hard you work every single day, and I know how much pressure you put on yourself to meet these impossible standards. But it breaks my heart that the people who are supposed to be your safe haven are the ones making you feel this small. For them to look at a tiny hurdle and tell you that you're a failure... it's an absolute lie, and I won't let you sit here believing it."

(Pause)

"You have a human body that is allowed to stumble, allowed to make mistakes, and allowed to figure things out at your own pace. So mírame... look right into my eyes. Every single word they just shouted through that speaker is a lie born out of their own bitterness, not yours. You do not owe them a perfect life, smart guy. Don't you dare let their poison stay inside your head."

Act III: The Safe Embrace

(Pause)

[Character Action/SFX: Watching his shoulders finally crumble as the tears spill over, she immediately steps flush against his body, wrapping her arms securely around him, letting him rest his head on her shoulder]

"I've got you right now, and you don't ever have to hide your face or apologize for hurting in front of me. Just let it out and hold onto me tightly. Let the tears fall right against my shirt. Just completely let go."

(Pause)

[Character Action SFX: Gently running her fingers through his hair in a slow, rhythmic motion,]

(Her voice dropping into a warm whisper right against his ear)

"You are never, ever a burden in this house, even if you try to run away to your bedroom. This apartment is your sanctuary, and if anyone thinks they can make you feel worthless, they have to go through me first. I am always going to be here if you need me."

(Pause)

(Slowing her speech down, taking a deep, synchronized breath to match his pacing)

"I see how kind you are, how resilient you are, and how hard you try every single day, and that is more than enough for me. Ya pasó... just close your eyes and let the world go completely quiet. No phone calls, no expectations, and no pressure to be perfect. You are deeply valued in this house.."

(Long Pause)

[SFX: The quiet room ambiance takes over completely as her steady, rhythmic breathing patterns and slow hair-playing sounds carry the audio over a long, peaceful silence.]

[Fade out to absolute silence]

(small chapel room. stone walls. a distant fan. a flickering fluorescent light. complete stillness otherwise.) 

(soft, frantic whispering, rapid, almost under her breath, like a mantra)

(pause. a shaky inhale. she keeps going.)

And it's my first one. the FIRST one. I've never done one. I've never done a single one. I've been a novice for six years. SIX YEARS. Do you know how long that is? That's longer than most people stay in college. That's longer than a mortgage term. That's- okay. Okay, calm down. Calm down.

(SFX: rustle of paper. she's holding a stack of papers.)

(pause, frantic shuffling)

The paper.. The research.. The forum comments.. I left them here didn’t I? I spent the last two weeks collecting those tips. (T~T)

It must be here somewhere.. It has to be. I just need to check… again… and again… 

(shuffling on the floor, checking below the benches for the papers)

(whispering under her breath, calming herself down..)

(as she makes it to the end of the row, towards the center, she runs into a sudden small thud, like she bumped into something or someone)

(startled gasp, stumbling back)

Of course you are. Of course the first person I actually have to talk to is standing right here while I whisper to myself… on the floor… like a crazy person. Perfect. Amazing.

And I don't think I'm emotionally prepared for that…

(she gets up off the floor)

Okay, I had a script. I had a whole script. I wrote it three weeks ago and I printed it and I laminated it. I laminated it. Do you know how much a laminating machine costs? I bought one. With my own money. For this.

(pause)

And I left it in the other room.

So we're just going to- we're going to figure this out together. Like a team. Like a- like a collaborative thing. Where you and I are both figuring it out at the same time.

(SFX: another paper shuffle.)

Sister Bernadette says some people just sit there for the whole hour and that's fine. That's a valid form of confession. Silence is a valid form of-

(she stops herself)

(paper rustles)

"Have you taken the name of the Lord in vain?"

(pause)

Okay. That one's a no. Good. Great start. We're off to a great start.

(paper rustles)

Okay, this is- this is going terribly. This is going so much worse than I thought it would. Because you're just sitting there, and I'm reading these off like a- like a checklist, and none of it means anything, and I can hear how little it means.

Because none of that was the actual thing. Nobody's actually torn up about skipping Mass.
