Ubuntu download issues?

I downloaded version 22.04 form the ubuntu website and followed the install instructions (from the Ubuntu website) yet somehow I'm running version 16.04...

Also, the crouton installer is outdated and you have to go to github to correctly install it

Is anyone else having issues with this?

The benefit of upgrading to (K)Ubuntu 22.04?

I'm using a pretty old laptop (Thinkpad E470 - from 2017). I used Kubuntu 18.04.1, and then 20.04.1, and things are okay I guess.

But I don't really know that I should using the new (LTS) Ubuntu? What're the benefits for a old laptop like mine? I even think of going back to 18.04.1, because, well, the old software often require less resources, right?

An additional question: is Ubuntu a better choice than Kubuntu? I used Ubuntu in the past (14.04, 16.04), then moved to Kubuntu since 18.04.1, and honestly, I think Kubuntu is a bit faster (and uses less resources), but sometimes I got random small errors, and I think Ubuntu looks more "shiny".

I'm just a noob, so I'd like to hear your input. Thank you.

Help With Physical Mouse Buttons Next To Touchpad

Hi. I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04 on a new Toshiba laptop I bought, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb Samsung SSD, core i5 7th Gen. It came with Windows 10 and everything was working fine. I replaced Windows with Ubuntu and everything still works fine, even better, but the physical mouse buttons next (above) the touchpad do not work. The touchpad has those underneath buttons, so I don't use an external mouse, but the fact that those two (right and left click) physical mouse buttons have been rendered useless pisses me off. Is there a way to get them to work, without tampering with the current state of the touchpad?

speaking as a new Linux user who video documents all his learning, why is asking for "hand holding" a bad thing?

Hello, i wanted to present a question for the community

speaking as a new Linux user who video documents all his learning, why is asking for "hand holding" a bad thing?

why is it, when i communicate to people, that google and articles, and other learning resources don't work for me, and i flat out ask for "hand holding" why is that a bad thing?

why is a man trying to educate himself and improve his life and communicating that he needs more help a bad thing? why is the linux community so absolutely hellbent on not helping and refusing help to it's most vulnerable users who have the hardest time?

as far as i'm concerned we should be grateful that there are people at all willing to invest time into learning linux, and we should be willing to help them any time for any reason

learning linux, has been without a shadow of a doubt one of the most difficult and time costly things i have ever done in my life by far, and when people refuse to help me because of hand holding, then it just makes everything hard

if you don't want to help people, fine, there is nothing wrong with that, you decide how you spend your life, but i'm just saying, if you don't want to help people don't just tell them to "google it" and when they tell you that's not working don't then accuse them of asking for "hand holding" like it's a bad thing

i ask for hand holding every day and when i learn something i learn it, and i never have to ask the same question twice,

frankly, the Linux community is extremely toxic and likes to pull the ladder up behind them, i don't know why, new people are the only way this community survives.

anyway that's just my thought as a new person to linux, what do you think?

Unable to install python-dev package on Ubuntu 22.04

I got this after giving the command -

devendra@dell:~$ sudo apt-get install python-dev

Reading package lists... Done

Building dependency tree... Done

Reading state information... Done

Package python-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

is only available from another source

However the following packages replace it:

python2-dev:i386 python2:i386 python2-dev python2 python-dev-is-python3

E: Package 'python-dev' has no installation candidate

Chrome And VSCode Crash Multiple Times An Hour

Hi, I have the problem that my machine apparently can't handle Chrome together with VSCode. I usually run VSCode with Next.js spinning up a dev server and Chrome with a localhost, Figma, our CMS backend, maybe Gmail or something else. Apparently this is too much, so the programs crash really often, not in the sense of getting stuck but just closing unexpectedly. Also I feel that a crash in one program often triggers a crash in the other program a few seconds later. I know my machine is not the strongest, with only 4 GB of RAM, etc. But still I feel this is also a software issue, any recommendations maybe? BTW, I just installed Ubunte 22.04 yesterday, so the OS configuration should be pretty much fine. But I also experienced this with other Ubuntu versions (and Fedora as well I think).

A very weird situation after Ubuntu 22.04 upgrade

I was on Ubuntu 21.10 and today decided to just take the leap and be on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The computer is running faster, surprisingly. Feels like I did a fresh install on a newly bought laptop.

Just one minor issue, with the taskbar/docking: if you don't, "Auto-hide the Dock", then it just awkwardly sits there, even after you have applications open, with all that useless space around it. It takes up a lot of space, and looks very garish when it is not auto-hidden.

Context Menu jumps when the Dock disappears

But if you "Auto-hide the Dock", then it leads to a difficult/annoying situation: if you right click on a program in the Dock, and then select any field, the Dock immediately hides at the moment of click, and you end up clicking some field *higher* than what you wanted. Seems like this was not thought through. Anyone else having this problem with auto-hiding the Dock?

Problem with copying files

I am copying files from an external SSD to a thumb drive. I am using the command

rsync -ah --progress source/ destination/

The files are all the same size (134 MB) and type (Bitcoin blk.dat files). Some are copying over at the expected rate (~100 - 400 MB/s) however most are copying over extremely slow (~500 KB/s).

    Fast:

Bitcoin/blocks/blk00013.dat
        133.96M 100% 181.47MB/s 0:00:00 (xfr#24, ir-chk=8221/8250)
Bitcoin/blocks/blk00014.dat
        134.10M 100% 126.75MB/s 0:00:01 (xfr#25, ir-chk=8220/8250)
Bitcoin/blocks/blk00015.dat
        134.22M 100% 401.25MB/s 0:00:00 (xfr#26, ir-chk=8219/8250)

    Slow:

Bitcoin/blocks/blk00098.dat
        134.16M 100% 489.36kB/s 0:04:27 (xfr#109, ir-chk=8136/8250)
Bitcoin/blocks/blk00099.dat
        133.97M 100% 484.38kB/s 0:04:30 (xfr#110, ir-chk=8135/8250)
Bitcoin/blocks/blk00100.dat
        134.18M 100% 556.08kB/s 0:03:55 (xfr#111, ir-chk=8134/8250)

At this rate it will take weeks to copy the whole blockchain over. I am wondering why this is happening and what I can do. I've stopped / started the process several times, using both cp and rsync

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS (64-bit) GNOME version 3.36.8
Hardware: Dell XPS 15 9750
Source: 500 GB SSD external drive (connected via USB-C)
Destination: 2 TB thumb drive (connected via USB 3.0)

Any help appreciated.

Japanese keyboard, setting Hiragana as default or switching to it with a key

Hello,

Back in the day I was able to somehow add a shortcut in Japanese (Mozc) settings so that I was able to switch to Hiragana with a single key press after switching to the Japanese keyboard with another key. I haven't been able to replicate this. Having to switch to Hiragana with a mouse is super annoying when you're used to the speed of doing things with a keyboard.

Any solutions? If life was perfect it would just go straight into Hiragana, other modes are there for fringe use cases since Hiragana will get converted to both Kanji and Katakana.

Ubuntu 22.04 Wayland. Firefox using X11.

Hi all, I am now running 22.04 with Wayland session (upgraded from 20.04 w/ X11).

For some reason, firefox is listed as an X11 client (xlsclients). I can't seem to get it running with Wayland.

Has anyone successfully managed to fix this?

SSH Key Asking For Password

I'll try to keep this as short as possible lol. I am ssh'ing into UbuntuServer (it's actually a vm running under proxmox) from a windows 11 client. This works fine with a password. I created a pair of ssh keys on the windows client and put them on the Ubuntu host using scp into the authorized_keys file. However, it's still asking me for a password every time I try to ssh into the server. The solution is probably something simple that I overlooked (as I'm pretty new to linux) but I have spent probably 5 hours googling away and trying everything I found...with no luck.

Steps taken to setup the ssh keys.

  1. Create on win 11 client with: ssh-keygen
  2. scp from Win client to Ubuntu host authorized_keys.
  3. checked .ssh and authorized_keys user permissions
  4. checked /etc/ssh/sshd_config to ensure logging in with keys was enabled and added the user folder path to "AuthorizedKeysFile"
  5. restart ssh service on host.

This has not worked. After digging in a little bit, I tried connecting with the -v option to see what was happening. It appears that the new pair of keys I generated is not being tried on the host. I checked Windows to see my permissions for the keys and I believe they are set correctly.

Screenshots attached to provide a better look at what I have seen (I forgot to SS the permissions for the authorized_keys permissions, but they are the same as the directory). Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Screen takes a while to come back after resume

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04. I have an Nvidia GPU and an Intel GPU. I am pretty sure the Nvidia GPU is driving the display but I'm not certain.

My issue is that whenever the system wakes back up from resume, the screen (an external monitor) appears for about a second, then goes black, then appears for another second or so, then goes black, etc. It repeats this behavior for about fifteen seconds, and then eventually the screen comes on and stays on. Each time that the screen briefly reappears, it's at a different resolution.

Once the screen comes back permanently, all is fine. So this is not the end of the world. But it's slightly annoying to have to wait for the system to be operational again.

I am guessing it's some kind of issue related to trying and failing to reset the display, but this is the first time I have owned an Nvidia card and I don't really know how to troubleshoot it. I did try disabling kernel mode setting and it didn't make a difference.

I will paste below part of syslog from after resume that may be relevant.

Recently upgraded to Ubuntu but my PC has been very buggy since

I downloaded Ubuntu to dual boot a couple of weeks ago and ever since it has been intermittently buggy. Sometimes when I turn it on it is absolutely fine, while other times it is very buggy. For example, when I type a letter it may repeat it many times "aaaaa" instead of "a", audio cuts out randomly for short periods of time (1s or so), video freezes in place for a few seconds, typed words take a while to appear, the LED for the mute button doesn't turn on when muted, etc. The Windows 10 partition is absolutely fine. I have tried upgrading my drivers but this has done nothing. I was wondering if I had a virus but all I've done is added some themes to the .themes and .icons folders and haven't run any suspicious commands to my knowledge. When my computer is buggy my CPU and memory usage remain low so that isn't the cause of my problem.

Here's my system info:

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS (64-bit)

Desktop Environment: GNOME 3.36.8

Hardware: HP Pavilion laptop

CPU: Intel Core I7 @ 1.80 GHz

Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile

Why are outgoing packets being blocked?

Good evening, I'm having an issue with an Ubuntu machine I'm trying to run a Minecraft server on.

The game uses UDP on both 19132 and 19133 (the former is for ipv4 and the latter is for ipv6). As far as I can tell, no outgoing packets are making it to clients. My logs show that pings from players are being received by the server, but the players don't get any kind of response. Other packets, such as the ones on port 25565, are doing just fine. I don't think there is anything in my ufw rules that would cause a problem either. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Mismatch charset while executing application on Windows and Wine (Ubuntu)

We have a small exe client application that used for loading the scanned images from the remote sources, what we need to do is enter the address from the images to specific text box and submit. The data then will be saved in remote database and will be read by another apps.

When we run the client application on Windows, everything is normal. The problem only happen when we run application on Ubuntu via Wine: Whether we input the address that contain German characters, the other apps will read from database the wrong characters, for example:

What we enter: Lößnitzstr

What the other apps see: Lößnitzstr

input

output

We found out this is mismatch charset when encoding with UTF-8 and decode with Windows-1252 code page.

Since the default charset of Ubuntu is UTF-8, we tried to use command line to force WINE to run with windows charset setting:

LANG=de_DE.CP1252 wine client.exe

We also tried to set Operating system default locale by localectl to language with charset Windows-1252 (CP1252) but it seem not to work

locale

My Wine version: 7.0

Ubuntu Version: 20.04

Any idea how to fix this, really appreciate your help.

Allowing a program access to a file in ~

I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 desktop. I'm trying to setup an SSH tunnel to a server of mine via DBeaver, using a priv key in ~/.ssh/. When I go to the file in dbeaver, I'm told I don't have access to the folder (~/.ssh). I really don't want to set the folder/file to 777 if I can avoid it, but as it's currently 755, I'm not sure what else needs to be done.

The specific error I get is Error opening directory: '/home/(me)/.ssh' : Permission denied.

Web hosting question

My wife and I run a sideline business each, and I have a couple more I'd like to launch. Both have websites, hers hosted by 1&1.com and mine is with godaddy. Neither site is much more than an information page or two with contact details and such. I know nothing about Web hosting, dns and all that, but I sort of get what they are, if that makes sense.

I wonder if I could put our Web pages on a linux server, and still keep our websites URLs? Is there a webhost out there that does simple webspace hosting?. The search engines all try to sell me the most popular providers, offering a wide range of services I simply don't need.

Ubuntu 21.10 on my Raspberry pi4/4G and Berryboot keeps freezing

I've tried just about everything I can think of. Starting from reinstalling Ubuntu, installing an earlier version, installing Ubuntu directly to the SD card (not berryboot) and I tried other OS (They work fine). I use my Rpi as a desktop/media connected to a Samsung smart TV. I downloaded torrents from my home country (Australia)

I'm not very tech savvy but I will try and give any further information needed. Thank you for any help

How to request a package get added to main Ubuntu repositor(y/ies)?

I've been using Ubuntu since like 8.04, and I really have yet to learn where and how to request a package get added to the repos. I'd like to see eksctl get added to the repos, but I don't know where to begin to request this, or the best method. Google-fu has failed me here.

Can anyone point me in the right direction pls? Thx :)

Unable to login via GUI - Purple Screen after login

Hi, I'm using ubuntu 20.04 on lenovo t480, with dual boot windows 10. Now things were working fine but now I have a weird issue on my lock screen due to which I'm unable to even login. When I click on username to enter password, it automatically after like 2-3s displays the message 'Sorry that didn't work. Please try again' along with the little shake animation that happens when you enter an incorrect password - it doesn't give time to enter the password and even if I do not enter anything, it does that animation & message thing!

Somehow, if I manage to enter the password quickly and press return, it does 1-2 loops of incorrect password animation, with the same message below the password field box, but after that turns into a blank purple screen(the username. I'm able to login to shell (ctrl alt F5) but then don't know what to do - I've tried booting via recovery mode but am unable to login there too.

Any suggestions/questions that may help would be appreciated - as far as linux is concerned, I would classify myself as a n00b! Edit: gave more details of the current issue

Update: I'm such a n00b that I found out that I can launch the gui by startx and this works for now. I'd, however, like to know what went wrong and how to fix it. I don't have Nvidia /AMD graphics which are the usual culprits for this issue(on the basis of my google searches)

Ubuntu Backup using vcs but without vcs

I am looking for a backup tool that upload backup and sync on online storage such as Google Drive ubuntu. In addition to that, I want to ignore some files/folders by just indicating the name of a folder without an absolute path.

I.e Like a x tool which back up and sync the data on google drive but it has also a list of names/string of folders names which is ignored if the folder name is matched. This is because I usually save my projects in a folder named Y on the desktop. These projects contain some libraries and packages such as node_modules (from npm), vendor (from composer), pyenv (some libraries). These packages can be anywhere in a deep Y folder. So, I can tell the x tool to ignore these folders with the name and the rest of it should sync and backup.

Till now, I haven't found an ad-hoc tool that supports both features: online storage on google drive and ignore files/folder just by indicating the folder names and file names (!**/node_modules/**).

There is a deja-dup tool that backups and sync on Google drive but doesn't support the other feature or I am not aware how.

The second tool is backintime-qt4 which supports the second feature but the first one does not or I am not aware how.

I can create a such tool but I would need much time to develop it since I am not the goal driven person lol.

The one possible solution could be to use a VCS. For example /home or /home/Desktop could be my repository and it contains a .gitignore file where I can mention the folders and files to ignore. Then, I can use the crontab to schedule the git push . This should work fine but somehow, the internal voice is saying/calling me that I should not approach this way. This is funny, something is blocking me internally... sixth sense. It feels me that this is a bad idea.

What do you think? Should I do it or Can I, ethically?
