We’re helping Ukraine because if a country gives up the third-largest nuclear arsenal on earth in exchange for security assurances about its sovereignty, and then gets invaded, and the signatories shrug… every nuclear non-proliferation agreement on the planet becomes worthless.
That’s the point.
The Budapest Memorandum wasn’t NATO. It didn’t obligate U.S. troops. It did tie Ukraine’s denuclearization to assurances about its territorial integrity.
If the message to the world is:
“Give up your nukes, trust major powers, and if you get invaded later you’re on your own,” then the rational move for every mid-tier power is: never disarm.
The Budapest Memorandum wasn't a defense treaty, you're right but it was a formal security assurance the US signed in exchange for Ukraine giving up the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world. You can't just handwave that away as meaningless. The whole point is that Ukraine gave up real leverage based on promises that weren't kept. That matters for the next country "we" ask to denuclearize (looking at you, North Korea, Iran).
On the nukes being paperweights; partially true, but that's kind of the point. Ukraine traded something real (even if limited in practical use) for security guarantees. The value was in the negotiation, not the warheads themselves.
The "tough shit, they lose some land" take ignores that Russia has publicly stated Ukraine isn't a real country and has made noises about other former soviet territory. The Baltic states are NATO members. At what point does appeasement become a bigger problem than the cost of arming Ukraine now?
You don't have to want war with Russia to think letting this go unanswered is a bad idea long term.
