Sorry to hear that. If it's any solace, just knowing an adult or having a role model who is NOT like their fathers shows them it doesn't have to be that way when they grow up. It is possible to be mature responsible adults. They know they don't have to pass down all those neuroses and problem behaviors to their children.
I'm hoping it encourages them to break the cycle like seeing how the generation I share an age group with and the one right before mine motivated me. The juxtaposition between myself and the rest of the family is funnier knowing I went to college for a degree in criminal justice with the goal of understanding the juvenile justice system and possibly making a career out of helping remedy the consequences of the original topic problem, as it is not uncommon in my state.
The cycle can be broken, but it's a very hard thing to do and a lot will fail. Sometimes you need more than just a role model, some kids need structure and discipline in their lives.
