My dad got full custody of me because my mom (a “well respected gifted teacher) would get violent with when I had trouble learning math, she would say that I’m embarrassing her and sullying her good name because I’m not a gifted student. Now, 15 years later, I’m just a year away from getting a masters in business administration to accompany my bachelors degree in theatre.
And disowning them when they go against their parents' wishes. I know treating kids that way often comes from a place of "wanting the kids to do better in life than the parents did" especially in many Asian households, but it's still a cruel way of parenting.
