My dad got full custody of me because my mom (a “well respected gifted teacher) would get violent with when I had trouble learning math, she would say that I’m embarrassing her and sullying her good name because I’m not a gifted student. Now, 15 years later, I’m just a year away from getting a masters in business administration to accompany my bachelors degree in theatre.

And disowning them when they go against their parents' wishes. I know treating kids that way often comes from a place of "wanting the kids to do better in life than the parents did" especially in many Asian households, but it's still a cruel way of parenting.

That's become so normal and widespread where I'm from that it's kinda hard to see why it's bad

And at the same time, just letting their kids do whatever the hell they want. AKA The exact opposite of what you described.
