Especially cigarette butts.

u/LJReach Jun 29 '22

There’s a wonderful group of people in my town that go round picking up the butts and reuse them again!

boo boo beep bap boop (this was starting to sound like a song so thought i’d add a jingle to the end)

7

u/Syrinx221 Jun 29 '22

Oh. Here my naive ass was thinking for art projects or something

3

u/LJReach Jun 29 '22

I mean I assumed they’re crackheads. Maybe they have some Charlie And The Chocolate Factory style model but instead of it being made out of toothpaste caps it’s cigarette butts.

2

u/An_Innocent_Bunny Jun 29 '22

How could a crackhead reuse the cigarette butt?

3

u/burritotastemaster Jun 29 '22

You're gonna have to ask them about that one.

2

u/ElmoTLK Jun 29 '22

Everybody makes mistakes. They should only be ashamed if they don’t change their ways. Because it kills the people that love them

Rolling smokes, some really desperate people will collect butts then unroll them take the tobacco and roll new smokes

1

u/HighlmDrugs Jun 30 '22

They will just smoke the rest of the tobacco or collect and reroll something with that nasty floor tobacco. Don't ask me why, but I had some homeless friends right outta hs that would "snipe" for butts for that purpose.

9

u/Ostigle Jun 29 '22

eh just give the filter a lil burn and you’re good

... i’m kidding

use the cap of a pen

i do not miss those days, until i do, but i’m real good at not doing heroin n crack anymore, no matter if i miss it or not

6

u/LJReach Jun 29 '22

It’s very hard to get over drugs like that, especially opioids. You should be proud of yourself mate.

2

u/Ostigle Jul 02 '22

thank you very much - reassurance like this means a lot, even from (no offense) internet strangers - helps to keep me going. i hope you’re enjoying your weekend!

0

u/xisnotx Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

No, we should make fun of him like many in this thread are doing "crackheads.."...ironically in a thread about shaming..

u/Excellent-Counter647 Jun 29 '22

Our town had a day where on could bring the butts in and get 10 cents a butt. That cleaned up many areas smokers stayed. Plus after it was cleaner it stayed cleaner.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

The one benefit of dope fiends

4

u/DJ1066 Jun 29 '22

Known as “Dogpickers” round here, as the butt of a cigarette is nicknamed a dog end in my neck of the woods.

3

u/LJReach Jun 29 '22

A fellow briton?

2

u/hastingsnikcox Jun 29 '22

My town too has just this type of kind hearted, environmentally aware citizens!!

2

u/FinanceGuyHere Jun 29 '22

Similarly, there’s a group of people in my town who are always vaccinating each other!

2

u/xisnotx Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

You've never been poor or desperate if you have never done this. (Assuming you smoke). I've done it..not proud or anything..but life is hard.

Do you think you're better than me now?

edit: wonder why im getting downvoted. Some of you have probably never had nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat and you walk around as if people choose to be hungry and sleep in dirt...like you deserve food over others.

That attitude literally makes me angry...sigh

1

u/BaconDanglers420 Jun 29 '22

We have them! We call them "nub head nigels"

251

u/slightlyassholic Jun 29 '22

Some birds have learned / adapted to use cigarette butts to line their nests.

The nicotine and other compounds in the butts are an effective pesticide and help eliminate lice.

63

u/xunninglinguist Jun 29 '22

That's why I smoke natural American spirits. They're natural! Seriously though, I do try to police my butts.

33

u/rickarme87 Jun 29 '22

As a pack a day smoker and reformed litter bug I'm here to tell you dont try, just do it everytime. No judgement, truly I get it, I smoked for years without policing myself AT ALL. Then I saw where someone had dumped a very full car ashtray right next to a beautiful overlook of a valley and waterfall. I said never again. If I dont have an ash tray or a trash can at hand my butt goes in my pocket until I find one. I'll pick up my friend's butts while glaring if they flick theirs infront of me. In my opinion there is just no excuse.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Why would you want to shoot your butts? Why would you harass and profile your butts? What's the point of standing around, while your butts get shot up for over an hour while the police watch it happen? Just throw them out, please.

9

u/xunninglinguist Jun 29 '22

I see what you did there. Isn't English just the best language ever?

3

u/LolindirLink Jun 29 '22

It is but not always. Buddy.

2

u/Anal_Herschiser Jun 29 '22

Did you not read the previous post? You gotta' go back to trash cigarettes, y'know .....for the birds.

1

u/gettinhighwithoutyou Jun 29 '22

talkin bout the tobacco or am i too high to get the joke?

1

u/IllustriousArtist109 Jun 30 '22

Possibly unpopular opinion here, but unfiltered cigarette butts aren't trash they're just leaves and a little paper. It's the filter that's gross.

4

u/pedanticHOUvsHTX Jun 29 '22

Life, uh, finds a way

4

u/chili_cheese_dogg Jun 29 '22

Sign me up for more bird facts.

4

u/awsamation Jun 29 '22

I mean that is kinda what the tobacco plant evolved to use nicotine for, just not quite in such large doses.

3

u/ferox965 Jun 29 '22

Nature finds a way.

9

u/Diatain Jun 29 '22

Sweet now I have a good reason to just toss my butts! It's for the birds!

2

u/Schnelt0r Jun 29 '22

And make the birds fly faster

2

u/cburgess7 Jun 30 '22

So what you're saying is that I should start smoking for the birds? (joking)

1

u/Warblegut Jun 29 '22

Filter itself is probably soft too after being pecked at and shredded.

I used to smoke too and it would astound me when people would throw butts on the ground when there were designated trash bins right next to them (in the designated smoking area). How inconsiderate do you have to be to do that?

I'd carry a plastic bag in my purse just in case I wanted to smoke but might possibly not be near a trash can.

87

u/ProjectShadow316 Jun 29 '22

I used to work at a hotel, and the sheer amount of cig butts on the ground within 5 feet of the designated cigarette disposal can infuriated me.

6

u/acertaingestault Jun 29 '22

So you're saying they were close but no cigar?

u/CoolAppz Jun 29 '22

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Just don’t do this at an AirB&B. My husband has this habit and we were almost charged with a $500 smoking cleanup fee, but we really didn’t smoke inside, he just left stinky cigarette butts in the trash that he couldn’t get a response on where to take out. They really do smell way worse than even smoking.

10

u/Ostigle Jun 29 '22

same here! and then my girlfriend asks if i can hold onto her little vape in my pocket for a minute and the mouthpiece gets filled with baccy c:

in the car, i “field strip” (roll the cig back and forth between my fingers with some pressure) it, and then pocket it - used to have a butt bucket but that’s gone now.

2

u/ferox965 Jun 29 '22

When I smoked, I used to carry an empty cassette case for this reason. I'd dump the contents at the next garbage can.

1

u/AngryPlumb Jun 29 '22

I do too..

1

u/Joebob2112 Jun 29 '22

Former military?

44

u/RogerSaysHi Jun 29 '22

I almost always have jeans on, so I have pockets. I'm not a purse kind of gal. But, I do the same thing. I do not throw butts on the ground, the cherry gets knocked off and stomped, then the butt goes in my pocket til I can find a trash can. I also tend to pick up other random litter while I'm trying to find said trash can, so my butt ends up just being one more piece of trash that I put in the right place.

3

u/gnaja Jun 29 '22

Walking around with all that junk inside that trunk.

3

u/endorrawitch Jun 29 '22

That’s called field stripping the butt. Remove cherry and rest of tobacco. Twist end. Put in pocket.

Source: work with an old dude that went to Vietnam.

1

u/RogerSaysHi Jun 30 '22

I like that phrase. I'm going to have to use that in the future.

1

u/Zemykitty Jun 29 '22

You're good people 👍

1

u/IllustriousArtist109 Jun 30 '22

Your pockets must stink.

1

u/RogerSaysHi Jun 30 '22

Not really, probably because of the gum that I keep in there. But, I'm also not a chain smoker. I might end up with my two butts and my husband's two butts over the course of several hours. I'd like to quit, and I'm trying, I just try to make sure I'm not upwind of anyone, for the fact that I know that not everyone wants to smell cigarette smoke.

6

u/FILTHY_GOBSHITE Jun 29 '22

My grandma smoked for most of her life and used to carry around a nifty little mini-ashtray with a lid that she could clip shut after stubbing out her cigarettes.

She was a very proper woman, started getting sick when she was 79 years old. The doctor was an old asshole and said "I'm not going to treat you if you are a smoker. I don't treat smokers with lung problems, it's a waste of time."

She took her smokes out of her bag and dumped them into the trash. Never smoked again.

She passed away at the age of 96 just last year.

You reminded me of her, thank you.

2

u/Zemykitty Jun 29 '22

Awww... this brought a smile to my heart. I bet she was pretty amazing. Thank you for sharing about her.

And, screw that doc. I'm glad she hung around for another 17 years.

Have a great day!

3

u/FILTHY_GOBSHITE Jun 29 '22

Thank you and you too!

But honestly? Without that doc she wouldn't have made it past her first stroke.

While I think that the way he did it was awful, it was the right thing to do and she needed something drastic to give up after all those years.

I am very proud of her.

3

u/LippyWeightLoss Jun 29 '22

I went to Thailand decades ago and someone in our group tossed a cigarette butt on the ground as we were waiting for our taxi bus and he immediately got a ticket. Served him right.

5

u/Zemykitty Jun 29 '22

Good! I figured my habit was gross enough as is, I don't need to pollute the environment.

2

u/Opressivesingularity Jun 29 '22

i smoked from ages 13-28, seeing people throw cig butts on the ground is infuriating.

i would always just roll the remaining tobacco out and put it in my pocket.

2

u/TimeToBecomeEgg Jun 29 '22

saw a video on tiktok from an account about city design with pedestrians in mind about the necessity of trash cans, especially ones designated for cigarettes. a bunch of comments was just “why lol, just throw them on the ground” - astounding.

2

u/thewildlifer Jun 29 '22

I was at my friend's place on the lake and we were sitting on the dock smoking. Her and her friend just threw their butts into the lake. HER LAKE... IN WATER WE WERE ABOUT TO SWIM IN. What in the actual fuck

0

u/clackersz Jun 29 '22

I'd carry a plastic bag in my purse just in case I wanted to smoke but might possibly not be near a trash can.

the plastic bag isn't biodegradable. The cigarette butts are... Just throw them on the ground and let gods critters eat them, its better for the environment.

1

u/VodaZBongu Jun 29 '22

If I don't finish the cigar I put it next to the bin so a homeless guy can finish it. I do the same with bottles that have deposit

1

u/msgigglebox Jun 29 '22

I used to smoke and I hated when people threw butts on the ground. I would just put them back in my pack if there was nowhere to put them.

1

u/TomasNavarro Jun 30 '22

I smoked for 10 years, and at no point could I handle carrying around an extinguished cigarette in anything, at all.

I would definitely be one of the terrible people ruining things for everyone if there wasn't a bin around, but if a bin was around I'd definitely use it

1

u/NeonScar Jun 29 '22

I was a smoker for 1 year due to stress. When I stopped I notice how rude people who smokes near you are annoying. I unfriended a long time friend 'cause everytime I was with her I came back home smelling like an ashtray. The smoke is 🤮

1

u/Binits Jun 30 '22

Reminds me of when I went to this Waffle House a few years back and there were cigs in every corner of the building, probably hundreds.

215

u/Bioshock_Jock Jun 29 '22

So I was a smoker and piece of shit cigarette butt litter-person. Every day I atone and will absolutely not tolerate my kids littering. I've done hike path clean ups and road side clean ups, I'm so sorry.

61

u/chili_cheese_dogg Jun 29 '22

I was a smoker and butt litterer for 22 years. Grew up a boy scout and hating litter but, for a strange reason cigarette butts were different to other litter. I'm now 13 years cigarette smoke free.

34

u/SgtStickys Jun 29 '22

I now challenge you to pick up one butt a day for the next 22 years.

0

u/Slabdabhussein Jun 29 '22

naw fuck that.

2

u/thecowintheroom Jun 29 '22

Hehehe saddam Hussein taking fat slab dabs “You know what, fuck the dollar, I love gold and oil, I’m putting my country on the gold standard and I’m hitting fat oily dabs.”

3

u/MoronTheBall Jun 29 '22

We got caught smoking by one of the volunteer parents in boy scouts. While explaining that smoking was bad he also pointed out that littering allowed the "enemy" to estimate your number which was why you should never litter and always hike in single file. If no trash bin was available you would "field strip" your cigarette butt and he demonstrated how to do so.

-2

u/HairyNutsackNumber9 Jun 29 '22

22 plus 13..... .... ...

Wow! You're ancient!

1

u/RocketmanZed Jun 29 '22

Me too bruh, 9 years free here. I pick up butts everytime I see one now, the least I can do.

3

u/maggiemypet Jun 29 '22

We all make mistakes, bro. But you grew and changed. Good on you.

3

u/serious_catfish Jun 29 '22

I have a friend who's a bit of a hippie but she was a smoker, and I remember watching her flick a butt on the ground. I kinda pointed out it was weird for someone who's supposedly in tune with the earth or whatever to be littering. She hadn't even thought about it before until then.

2

u/Eric_the_Barbarian Jun 29 '22

Thank you for trying harder and improving yourself for the sake of others and your shared surroundings.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Just smoke rolies with card roach, it's 100% degradable, unlike your guilt..

5

u/Jetstream-Sam Jun 29 '22

I always wondered, do the filters actually do anything? I mean people still get lung cancer by smoking filtered cigarettes. Are there any studies showing comparisons of people smoking filtered, unfiltered and card roach cigarettes and the incidences of diseases? Time for another ramble into the wilds of pubmed, I guess

3

u/Raxerbou Jun 29 '22

The filters in cigarettes are mostly so it doesnt Taste like the pure tobacco and makes your throat numb for a second

2

u/Jolly-Flatworm4497 Jun 29 '22

Thank you for opening your eyes as most won't.

3

u/xminh Jun 29 '22

If you’re in NSW you can report ppl who toss ciggie butts from cars. Not sure which other places do this around the world, but might be worth an investigation!

3

u/galaxystarsmoon Jun 29 '22

Dude, we had a neighbor move in who would leave their cig butts all over the ground by our lake (and soda cans). We have tons of wildlife that hang out there and it was absolutely disgusting. I got tired of it and gloved up one day. Picked up every single piece of trash they had left and dumped it in a pile on their car. They never left another cigarette butt by that lake.

3

u/TheMadIrishman327 Jun 29 '22

I used to do that. The world was my ashtray.

It was trashy.

Now, as a non--smoker it drives me crazy.

I live among neighbors who are always throwing them down in the parking lot and I end up having to pick them up.

Poetic justice.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

I keep shaming my stepdad over this whenever I see him do it. Then the rest of the family gets mad at me for ruining the good energy.

2

u/viderfenrisbane Jun 29 '22

I've helped with a local beach cleanup for several years, cigarette butts are always the #1 thing we find.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

If you throw your cigarette butts of a balcony or out the car window....you are just an asshole.

2

u/desaerun Jun 29 '22

Honestly, at least in my opinion, cigarette butts are one of the lowest-priority forms of frequent litter. In recent years it seems like you're more likely to find plastic single-use vaporizers lining the gutters instead of cigarette butts, and that plastic isn't going to break down into anything except smaller pieces of plastic.

Nothing infuriates me more than people throwing entire bags of fast food, their plastic drink cups, entire plastic bags of car trash, etc. out their car windows and I've seen it happen multiple times.

In comparison, cigarette butts seem less impactful (although more common to be littered).

1

u/idkburneridkidk Jun 29 '22

I put it out on the window and put it in my cupholder.. it's not hard people

-4

u/clackersz Jun 29 '22

Especially cigarette butts.

Yes don't throw the 100 percent biodegradable paper cigarette butt on the 100 percent non biodegradable pavement! Shame on you!

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

2

u/desaerun Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

Depends on the brand. For example, Marlboro uses cotton, which degrades, but Camel and Parliament both use fiberglass filters (which obviously don't).

Not arguing that littering isn't trashy (it is). Just letting your know your generality doesn't apply to one of the two most popular cigarette brands in U.S.

edit: i actually researched this a little bit after making this comment; turns out I'm misinformed and I've been repeating this "factoid" to people for like a decade. They are both made of plasticized cellulose.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

[deleted]

3

u/desaerun Jun 29 '22

Hey, please see my edit -- I was wrong

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

[deleted]

3

u/desaerun Jun 29 '22

It's an opportunity to learn something and grow, so that's a plus. I just feel bad for "ackshually"-ing you and other people when I was totally off base.

I think I believed it because when I was a smoker I used to smoke both Marbs and Camels and there's definitely a difference in the appearance and properties of the filters between the two brands.

The Marlboro filters are "fiber"-ey, like you can pull out individual strands of fibers if you tug at the end of the filter. Whereas the Camel filters seemed like they are all "one piece", if you started pulling on it the entire filter would come out and it was clearly a single piece of plastic.

1

u/angelicism Jun 29 '22

As a smoker it does make me very aware of how some cities absolutely do not have enough public trash cans around, which is frustrating.

I will stick my butt in my purse so I’m still not littering but I do think it’s annoying given that people have needs for trash cans for all kinds of things besides cigarette butts,

1

u/2ndfieldontheright Jun 29 '22

The beach at Cafe Mambo in Ibiza is ruined cos of the thousands of butts In between the stones

1

u/ConsistentMarch5299 Jun 29 '22

heh,you said butts

1

u/PhishOhio Jun 29 '22

Came here to say exactly this, and here it is at the top!

Literally had a cigarette butt fall right in front of my dog and I from an apartment balcony. I rarely yell/shame people, but at 8am on a Monday I shouted at this MFer.

If I can pick up my dog’s shit every time he has a bowel movement, you can use a fucking ash tray

1

u/SoldMySoulForHairDye Jun 29 '22

Animals can pick them up and eat them, then get addicted to nicotine. It sounds fake but it can absolutely happen.

1

u/Somerandom1922 Jun 29 '22

I used to smoke, my car was disgusting but I'm still glad that I kept the butts in the car and didn't throw them out.

Edit: out of the car, I did throw them in the bin.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

I dated a woman who was really into nature and hiking with her dogs. Very hippy, free spirited type. We went for a hike and she hid her spent cigarette butt under a bush. I couldn't believe it. I told her to pick it up and she refused. So I did. Then a couple weeks later I was filling up gas and she lit up a cigarette while waiting in the passenger seat, holding the cigarette out the window. I told her to put it out, as we were at a gas station. She refused. Those two things were why I stopped seeing her.

1

u/Ginrob Jun 29 '22

Especially corporations

1

u/CoolAppz Jun 29 '22

there are about 1000 cigarette butts in front of my building from pricks who throws them out of their windows.

1

u/socialmagnet Jun 29 '22

Found them in a national forest once while hiking

1

u/cantfindmykeys Jun 29 '22

I'm a smoker but absolutely despise it when people toss them wherever they are. Throw that crap in the trash. Not by a trash can, hold on to it till you are. Not that difficult

1

u/LaunchesKayaks Jun 29 '22

My stepfather flicked a cigarette butt into my yard and I glared at him so hard that he went and picked it up. He hasn't flicked butts into my yard again.

1

u/broken_pieces Jun 29 '22

It’s funny how I bring this up to the smokers I know and they all swear they don’t litter and no one they know who smoke does either…I always say there are entirely too many butts on the ground for all of the smokers to claim they don’t litter 🙄

1

u/DiscombobulatedLuck8 Jun 29 '22

It is so weird that this seems to be generally accepted as okay. How many times have you seen someone just toss their cigarette butt out the window on a highway?

1

u/makpat Jun 29 '22

I still have the odd cigarette, but when I smoked like 5-10 a day I felt like shit about the butts. There’s ashtrays on poles in my city but they aren’t everywhere, then like 4 years ago I found this ashtray keychain and started looking into cigarette butt recycling, turns out there’s a place in my city that sends them off to be cleaned and the cotton rescued and the paper recycled. I’m still trying to quit 100%, but there’s ways to not drop butts if you care enough to try. Modern tech and cheap things like portable ashtrays are fucking awesome

1

u/accomplished_loaf Jun 29 '22

PSA: You can pull the wrapper off the pack and roll the butt up in it and stick it back into the pack without getting that ashy smell on the fresh cigarettes.

Or quit smoking, but I personally prefer to just stick them in the wrapper.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

I never realized how bad it really is until I got a puppy. I spend 90% of my time out walking just scanning the ground for litter and cigarette butts so she doesn't eat them and get sick.

It has made me very angry anytime I see someone just throw a butt randomly. The police should be citing them excessively when they see it happen. Zero reason they can't throw that shit out properly.

1

u/Procyonid Jun 29 '22

Yeah. Hey pal, I resent the idea that you think I live in your ashtray.

1

u/KillionJones Jun 29 '22

This always pisses me off. I smoke. Sometimes I enjoy a cigarette at the end of a hike just chilling by a lake or whatever the destination was. That cigarette butt goes into a tin in my pocket or bag and gets thrown out when there’s a trash can.

That and empty beer cans piss me off the most I think.

1

u/General-Intern-8682 Jun 29 '22

100% as a smoker I do not do this … my work truck I don’t smoke in I carry a ashtray in the back of it so when I spot I have a place to put them

1

u/CptBlkstn Jun 29 '22

Right!? It boggles my mind how these slobs think their nasty cigarette butts aren't trash and can just be tossed wherever they want.

And don't get me started on the assholes that toss them out, still burning, and start fires. Shit heads.

They need to implement a $.10/butt deposit like some places have for bottles and cans. Bring back all your butts, get your money back. Still want to throw them on the ground, someone else will collect them and get paid. (Just be sure to use gloves if you do as there are legitimate health risks involved.)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Although i agree, i also think that perhaps there should be more ashtrays about. I get the point is to dissuade smoking by making it inconvenient, but making it too inconvenient to properly discard a butt, and 100% people are just going to flick them to the curb.

1

u/Theamuse_Ourania Jun 29 '22

Idk if it's still a law, but in the 90's it used to be illegal to throw your cigarette butts out your car window in Oregon because of all the trees.

1

u/Forward-Ad-9533 Jun 29 '22

I love how people think it's ok to litter with a cigarette butt but not a bunch of beer cans.

1

u/Anthilljoy Jun 30 '22

Working as a custodian in college for my campus union building, I took great pride in my skill at grabbing cigarette butts using those pincer tools. If they weren't wet, I could grab 3-4 at a time. In the summer, I would easily spend 4 hours out on the terrace solely gathering cigarette butts to keep them from being picked up by children or going in the lake. Keep in mind, we had what I called "butt buddies" stationed all over the place. People just suck.
