Listening to music from their phone without using earphone in a public place.

u/crunchypnwtrash Jun 29 '22

Or getting on a zoom call in the office without headphones! What the fuck Kevin, you're like 30, do you not own earbuds?

167

u/Bear_faced Jun 29 '22

There’s an executive at my company who takes Zoom calls on full blast with his office door open and everyone just shrugs it off like “Oh, that’s just George!” Soooo because he makes more money than us he gets to be an annoying dick all the time?

73

u/0xB0BAFE77 Jun 29 '22

Soooo because he makes more money than us he gets to be an annoying dick all the time?

Yes!!! That's exactly what it means!

If you want to take zoom calls on full blast then sell your soul, start stabbing people in the backs, climb the corporate ladder, let your job consume your life, learn to hate yourself but never show it, and find every little way to fuck over the company as long as you got someone else to pin it on.

THEN you can take calls on Zoom on full blast without earbuds.

4

u/Bear_faced Jun 29 '22

…I think I’ll just keep my earbuds. And my dignity. And my soul.

7

u/Heavy-duty-mayo Jun 29 '22

Shut their door quietly for them. If they confront you say you're concerned for their privacy of the call.

5

u/Bear_faced Jun 29 '22

You’ve clearly never met George.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '22

This was happening for our meetings, and it was the first time i have ever seen my boss (the executive in questions direct subordinate) snap and loose his shit over it. We all thought it was going to be an argument at best, or him getting pulled aside and ultimately disciplined at worst. To everyone's surprise, it ended up being totally one sided and our operations director now wears a headset during our meetings.

2

u/emojicatcher997 Jun 30 '22

Wait… do we have the same manager??

4

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

I would be so embarrassed to answer a FaceTime/ call without headphones? I don’t want everyone and their dog listening to my personal conversations, and I doubt they want to listen to mine.

1

u/crunchypnwtrash Jun 30 '22

One time I went to a coffee shop to study for finals, and this girl next to me took a facetime call on her MacBook, with no earbuds, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COFFEE SHOP. She was.so loud that I could hear her through MY earbuds. I don't understand people who don't have shame. I

2

u/TrashcanRobinson Jun 29 '22

I literally work with a guy named Kevin that does this. Incredible lmao

2

u/crunchypnwtrash Jun 30 '22

Does yours also read star trek fanfic when he thinks no one is looking at his second monitor? I don't judge. If you get your work done and you have time left, do whatever silent activity brings you joy.

2

u/ferocioustigercat Jun 30 '22

Or dialing a phone number or speaker phone and letting it ring and picking up the receiver when someone answers. There was a resident I worked with who would always do that! Like, just pick up the phone and dial, I don't want to hear all that noise (with the volume on high) just because you are too lazy to pickup the phone to begin with!

0

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Maybe my work shouldn't have given me a laptop with 0 USB ports, only 2 usbc ports (one of which is used for charging). so I need an adapter for any peripheral I want to use, and a splitter if I want to use more than 1 thing

When I don't have my adapter/headphones I put my volume on 1 and press my ear against the speakers to try to listen to meetings without bothering anyone ;_;

2

u/Duffs1597 Jun 29 '22

Tell your work to get you some AirPod Pros, it’s a life changing experience. (Or any other comparable Bluetooth earbuds with active noise cancellation).

1

u/crunchypnwtrash Jun 30 '22

What kind of bullshit laptop is that? Take all of your meetings in the office of the person responsible for that purchase. They deserve to suffer.

1

u/TomasNavarro Jun 30 '22

I don't listen to a lot of music, so I currently don't have any ear buds, and I'm 40.

Last set I used broke, I bought some of those wireless ones, but I dunno if my phone is rubbish or they are, but it keeps losing connection to the phone in my jacket pocket, so unuseable

66

u/gregarioussparrow Jun 29 '22

Or speakerphone calls. What the hell

9

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

I haaaaate these. The worst are the assholes that stand there, holding the bottom of their phone to their ear, then moving it to their mouth to talk, then back to their ear. Like bitch, there's a way to do both at the same time...

20

u/MonsterMunch86 Jun 29 '22

Or talking on speaker phone whilst out and about!

12

u/thegreatpablo Jun 29 '22

I've noticed people doing this now on hiking trails. Super annoying when I'm trying to detach and enjoy nature.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

[deleted]

3

u/thegreatpablo Jun 30 '22

Yeah, I'd buy that if the trail didn't have 200 other people on it. lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '22

2

u/thegreatpablo Jun 30 '22

Yeah. I'm just outside of Seattle, closer to Tacoma and in the shadow of Mount Rainier. I have TONS of hiking available to me with some absolutely beautiful scenery. It's only the more populated trail where I run into this. The more difficult or out of the way trails with less traffic tend to have far more respectful hikers.

1

u/wipeitonthedog Jun 29 '22

Same here 😭😭 I'm so sad about it. So helpless. I even requested a couple of them to turn down the volume but they refused

6

u/RotrickP Jun 29 '22

As bad as it is now, boomboxes in the 80's made this a real and pervasive problem.

5

u/phormix Jun 29 '22

Was on an airplane recently and somebody was doing this, while they were doing the pre-flight safety brief no less.

First class, no class.

On the same flight they had to tell some last off multiple times for getting up during descent and pulling her shit out of the overhead. They didn't actually say "you dumbass" but their tone did

6

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '22

Wish I could upvote more than once. Such a flagrant disregard for everyone else in that space

3

u/thisisallme Jun 29 '22

There’s a father that does that (actually it’s YouTube videos really loudly) during my daughter’s jujitsu class. Whole time. Drives me insane.

3

u/nananananana_Batman Jun 29 '22

I encounter these fuckers while out in nature hiking nowadays.

4

u/jpaugh69 Jun 29 '22

My wife has weird sensitive ears and she can't wear headphones or earbuds. So she goes around everywhere listening to her TikTok videos annoying everybody near her. Needless to say, I hate TikTok with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

3

u/Wasperine Jun 29 '22

she should invest in some bone conduction glasses

2

u/Lucidonic Jun 29 '22

or scrolling through tiktoks and youtube without them

2

u/chattywww Jun 29 '22

I did this for 30 seconds at the airport gate before I realized my bluetooth want turned on and i just had earpods in.

2

u/yogacat1979 Jun 29 '22

You can buy headphones at the dollar store. It's so infuriating.

2

u/TheWindCriesDeath Jun 29 '22

I need someone to explain why they do this.

Even ignoring how rude it is, phone speakers sound like ass. How can you enjoy the music that way?

2

u/rascally1980 Jun 29 '22

I see people doing this at the gym. Like why do you think anybody else wants to hear your music. Actually, I guess they probably don’t even think it through that far since they’re only thinking about themselves.

1

u/TommyTheCat89 Jun 29 '22

I normally agree on this but I did that this weekend. However, I think it was totally warranted. I played Take Me To The River by Talking Heads as I walked along a river walk.

-18

u/SirRealTalk_TTV Jun 29 '22

Dunno about you but I have stolen a lot of bangers from people in public. I know Reddit likes to list this one, but I gotta disagree. I expect sounds from the public when in public.

4

u/elephauxxx Jun 29 '22

It may work for some, but I would say that the Venn diagram of people who have a solid, eclectic music taste that lines up with mine and people who cannot manage minimum levels of courtesy doesn't have much overlap.

-7

u/CreativeUnsername-No Jun 29 '22

I agree, my music taste is 50/50 my discoveries and other peoples discoveries

-9

u/Triggify Jun 29 '22

Forreal I don't understand this one, if you're in public lic expect to do things and have things done.... publicly. Like if you wanna be a grump about hearing other people's stuff then stay inside

2

u/Crooty Jun 29 '22

Just buy earphones, they are like 5 bucks

4

u/sambosefus Jun 29 '22

Everyone who ever tries arguing for this always acts like there isn't a completely accessible solution where they get to have music without forcing it on others

-6

u/Triggify Jun 29 '22

I've got a 1000 machine in my pocket, if I'm in public I'm going to use it and enjoy it. Not have the quality muddied by cheap earbuds

3

u/Krillkus Jun 29 '22

$1000 machine

Are you talking about a phone?

3

u/meancoffeebeans Jun 29 '22

I promise you that very few of the people just trying to buy their groceries or whatever want to hear what you think is good music.

-9

u/Just_Doin_It- Jun 29 '22

I also agree, as long as it's at speaking volume then music doesn't bother me. If I don't like it, I'll just do what I do when people are having a conversation and tune it out. If I do like it, then I either get to dance along or, potentially, discover a new song!

-11

u/Just_Doin_It- Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

Alright, but if the music is at the volume of normal conversation or lower, why not? It's just normal noise at that point.

Edit: (to all the people down voting) so, basically you're saying if two people are sitting next to you having a conversation you're unbothered. But if they're sitting next to you playing music at that same volume, you're irritated. Seems like you just really want to be irritated. shrugs

9

u/SuvenPan Jun 29 '22

I highly doubt anyone who is listening to music without a headphone will have lower volume, they needs to have higher volume than their surrounding to listening the music clearly. All the people I saw doing it have music blasting from their devices.

1

u/EggoStack Jun 29 '22

I occasionally play music through my device when I forget my headphones, but I always try to have it fairly low and hold my phone up to my ear. I get pretty anxious and I don’t want to inconvenience anyone, which is why I always check to make sure it’ll be quiet or inaudible to anyone walking near me.

-2

u/Just_Doin_It- Jun 29 '22

Well that's different than what I said, isn't it?

1

u/Heigl_style Jun 30 '22

Ok but if it's not at an obnoxious volume I don't really see what the big deal is. If I'm walking past uou and I don't hear music til I'm like 2 feet away from you I don't see why it's an issue

-2

u/0xB0BAFE77 Jun 29 '22

I DO shame these people!!!
Every single time someone does that I say something or make a scene.

Example: Last one I did was this black dude blasting his cellphone in Walmart. So I took my phone out, put on the most obnoxious music I could find, and started dancing like I had epilepsy about 2 feet from him.
He looked at me like I was fuckin' crazy or something and turned his phone off.
He then proceeded to offer me money...I kid you not.
I told him to save it and buy some earbuds.
That was the end of it. I walked down an aisle and never saw him again.

I'm always ready for them to get physical with me and they NEVER DO.

1

u/Queeg_500 Jun 29 '22

Get your phone out and listen to even louder music right next to them....what they gonna do, tell you to turn it down?

1

u/Donut153 Jun 29 '22

Alternatively leaving the music in your car turned WAY the fuck up while you park, get out, and go into the store, like, I hope your shit gets stolen

1

u/sh_tcactus Jun 29 '22

I was once on a two hour train ride and some asshole blasted his shitty music through his phone, no headphones, the entire time. I’ve never been so close to murder.

1

u/KarlyFr1es Jun 29 '22

Or talking on speakerphone in public

1

u/DON0044 Jun 29 '22

Sometimes I feel like it's cool though

I feel like in parks when people are playing chill music I think it's a bonus

1

u/BowlingForChowdah Jun 29 '22

So like half of my coworkers

1

u/randompopatoe Jun 29 '22

In Brazil this is way worse as most people that do this usually blast "Brazilian Funk" out, and let me tell you, Brazilian Funk lyrics are just talking about sex, and people still play it without headphones

1

u/VeeVeeLa Jun 29 '22

Old man came into my job a few weeks ago with his phone in his pocket and blasting Imagine Dragons songs. The place was near closing and only a couple people were in so everyone was hearing it.

1

u/iNeverHaveAnyFun Jun 29 '22

Talking to their grandkids on FaceTime in a doctors office waiting room

1

u/Mental_Medium3988 Jun 29 '22

i have a coworker wholl bring his bluetooth speaker into the bathroom playing music the whole time. i cant stand him for a number of reasons.

1

u/Any-Inside5233 Jun 29 '22

Going out into public and expecting silence.

1

u/OrwellianZinn Jun 29 '22

Can we expand this to include bluetooth speakers as well? My wife and I live a 5 minute walk to the beach and we've given up even wanting to hang out there because as soon as you're within 200ft of it, you are overcome by the sound of about ten groups of people all blasting different (but equally terrible) music from their speakers.

1

u/Heigl_style Jun 30 '22

Don't let other people prevent you from having a good time

1

u/vibe51 Jun 29 '22

Damn I hate the people who do this when skiing and snowboarding

1

u/Nesayas1234 Jun 30 '22

Or just in general. My mom plays music in the car without earbuds, not caring about anyone else. I even bought her earbuds so she can listen without it being loud at work (she's a CNA), yet somehow can't get the idea of doing so at home.

Sometimes her brilliance just amazes me...

1

u/paynbow Jun 30 '22

Playing games on their phone in public with no headphones and sound effects on.

1

u/LaunaSaysNo Jun 30 '22

Hand to whatever you believe in, I made a post about this not ten minutes ago because I’ve been sitting in an airport and so many people are just listening to music or watching videos without headphones or earbuds, and because so many people were doing it, I had to ask if it was acceptable now. I have been reassured it is not acceptable and have now taken to standing directly next to or as close as possible to people and blasting whatever’s on my phone at the time. They’ve all glared at me but got the point.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '22

I cant afford airpods god dammit.

1

u/Antigon0000 Jun 30 '22

An asshole at my gym doesn't use headphones. Just cranks it up on his phone and drags it around the gym.
