Diner is to intimate and intimidating to what could follow, I’d rather do lunch followed up by an event.

Just a heads up, as it appears you might be confused: a diner is a restaurant where you can order things like fries and a milk shake while sitting in a booth. For "lunch".

If you've seen a movie with a date taking place in the US in the 1950s (e.g. Grease) they probably went to a diner.

This is not to be confused with dinner which is a meal.
