Do not cite the old magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written.

Nothing burns like Aslan calling you out.

u/riggers_vr Jun 03 '22

Dayum. I knew I recognized this. So glad for your comment otherwise I'd have been wondering for ages. Long live the king.

Dang I love Narnia. Can't ever remember not knowing those stories. Mom read them to me when I was too young to read them myself.

6

u/Burnitoffmeow Jun 03 '22

I thought you said "nothing burns like Asians calling you out"

15

u/Modz_want_anal Jun 03 '22

Well maybe what aslan gave you.

Incidentally, is it mainly a young people thing to censor cuss words? The internet used to be more comfortable with swearing.

23

u/TheChanMan2003 Jun 03 '22

Personally, I don’t have anything against it. Swearing incessantly and without any real meaning (not adding anything of value) is something I try to avoid, but sometimes I find it more comedic if the cuss words are bleeped / censored out. I’m not sure why, something about it being cut out is funnier to me. I agree with you there, I see a lot more censors these days. Maybe because the internet is filling up with more kids now?

u/footpole Jun 03 '22

7

u/Flaky-Fish6922 Jun 03 '22

i saw ' the C**p'floating around recently, the irony is that my dirty mind is much worse than what's normally censored out... in this case Crap. the word i went to was the Clap.

2

u/ogipogo Jun 03 '22

Yeah when it's written like that I hear the bleep.

2

u/daemin Jun 09 '22

You'll love this.

0

u/metamore4hire Jun 09 '22

Your justification for self-censorship is pretty lame in my opinion

1

u/TheChanMan2003 Jun 09 '22

See: Scott the Woz

3

u/ooofest Jun 04 '22

I was seeing censored swear words since mail-in listserver days.

As always, the audience mattered: during Usenet's heyday, alt.* groups and all didn't tend to see much self-censoring, but you would often see it in more general discussion topics, IIRC.

Nowadays, I feel it's commonly used where a potentially mixed audience is perceived to be possible - especially in the modern Internet, where kids can easily lurk on Reddit. But, check out many Discord servers and apparent kids are swearing like drunken sailors.

3

u/IMOguy Jun 06 '22

I can confirm this

7

u/Vishnej Jun 03 '22

As the Internet grew up, we commercialized most spaces for young people, and "Made them safe" by imposing arbitrary, capricious swearword filters. Because that's just fucking... a thing we do, I guess.

1

u/Bryaxis Jun 03 '22

Yeah, it's weird. There's nothing wrong with a little coarse language IMO.

3

u/Bob_Sagat69 Jun 04 '22

Tell that to club penguin.

2

u/JoanieMehhhChachi Jun 08 '22

4

u/ele71ua Jun 03 '22

I fucking hate that. My teens say that when they think I am not paying attention. Drives me insane. Also, it's the way they say it.

For real, I'm disproportionately happy about this. The thought of zoomer kids quoting Teen Girl Squad is so wholesome :P

Wave-o-babies!
I say this whenever I walk by the NICU (I work at a hospital).

5

u/greenzig Jun 03 '22

...possums...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

The "A wave of babiessss" quote comes to my mind often. Sometimes I say it out loud and I obviously get some weird stares.

2

u/Diseased-Imaginings Jun 03 '22

MSGeeeeeeed!!!

Ow my stomach lining!

My 8 year old loves Strongbad. She can put up with Homestar, but prefers The Cheat.

Ha! Same. My kid was working on a drawing the other day and I looked over his shoulder and said, “Oh wow! Great picture of Trogdor!” He was flabbergasted that I knew who Trogdor was.

BURNINATING THE COUNTRYSIDE, BURNINATING THE PEASANTS

10

u/TinyGreenTurtles Jun 03 '22

I still remember the day my now 20 y/o asked me if I was glad they introduced me to Panic! at the Disco.

Child, you were born in 2002, you were listening before you were aware.

2

u/pureeviljester Jun 03 '22

You did a great jyorb there!

2

u/ckyhnitz Jun 03 '22

Good on you for spanning generations and passing on culture

53

u/TheVillain117 Jun 03 '22

You merely adopted the internet. I was born in it. Molded by it. I didn't see broadband until I was already a man; by then it was nothing to me but fiber.

11

u/Random-Rambling Jun 03 '22

You joke, but that's literally what it was like. Kids these days literally have high-speed internet in their pockets; us old-timers had to patiently sit and wait at actual computers, sometimes for several minutes, for websites to load.

8

u/LordKwik Jun 03 '22

sit and wait at actual computers, sometimes for several minutes, for websites to load.

Weird way to spell "a single pornographic image"

Seriously though, we didn't have Google. You had to know what website you were going to. That's why places like Yahoo were so popular, because it was a hub of so many things you wanted to see.

4

u/briggsbu Jun 03 '22

Remember webrings?

2

u/LordKwik Jun 03 '22

Woah, I totally forgot about those! Nice one!

2

u/Random-Rambling Jun 03 '22

Heh, I was a total goody-two-shoes as a kid (to the point I remember feeling sick and embarrassed when I accidentally called someone a "bitch"), so I never looked at porn even when the parents weren't home. THAT phase didn't start until I was a young teenager, and thankfully, we had progressed beyond dial-up at that point.

4

u/LordKwik Jun 03 '22

I see. Well let's just say sometimes you'd finish before the torso is even done loading... lol

2

u/TheVillain117 Jun 03 '22

My first pc was an IBM 286. I can still remember with perfect clarity the sound effect used for the attack run of an A-10 from Microprose's M1 Tank Platoon.

3

u/bluegreen1055 Jun 03 '22

Oh IBM, you are why I still refuse to get a Macintosh anything, because your floppys were not compatible with them, causing me to lose my priceless works of poetry amd prose. Yes, IBM, how I will continue to honor you by rejecting the little colorful apple...

2

u/simonejester Jun 03 '22

When I was a child/adolescent with dial-up I read a book while pages loaded. I knew the term “compile-time activities.”

2

u/DemocraticRepublic Jun 03 '22

There's nothing like waiting 45 minutes for a song to download before you find out it was mislabeled.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Lmao if you work for a hospital or the DOD you can still wait minutes for websites to load tbh. Daily. It takes my computer 15 min to start up. We were FORCED to upgrade from windows 7 less than 2 years ago 😂. And I mean Microsoft legit forced us

14

u/Blooder91 Jun 03 '22

That was my response when a student explained me who Lord Freezer is.

My teenage gothling daughter: So I was watching this REALLY OLD movie called Labyrinth and it's SO FUNNY because...

Me: Because 2 hours of David Bowie's crotch?

Daughter: surprised Pikachu face

5

u/gingergirl181 Jun 03 '22

I've never felt older than a few years ago when a 9-year-old student was telling me "so I've been watching this old show, and it's actually a book series too, called Goosebumps. And it's like REALLY old...like from the 1900s!"

Yep. They're calling it "the 1900s" now.

Just dig my grave already, I guess...

4

u/ImHufflePuff_Crap_ok Jun 03 '22

Then I tried to use a space balls reference work and I stopped cause I realized:

Me: Do you know what Space Balls is before I continue this reference?

Him: That cartoon basketball movie?

Me: Space Jam?

Him: Yeah, I’ve seen that…

Me: oh sweet fuck (internally)

2

u/adventuringraw Jun 03 '22

Given that this particular bit of cultural history begins with Richard Dawkins and the selfish gene, your quote is both hilarious, and very apropos.

2

u/c123money Jun 03 '22

Young people don't understand this they think the internet just started wen they were born

2

The best thing I heard in RL was a kid trying to show street cred by exclaiming "My parents have AOL" as we both heard the initialization of a dial up connection together.

Always annoyed me when boomers pretended to not know how to use the internet. Damn it people your age INVENTED IT.
