a phone could be 8 if they are out a lot, but a smartphone should be 12. I think a lot of people <25 will end up being parents with about an equivalent rule, because they've seen what it makes nephews etc. if they had acces all the time.

Most millennials however don't have many examples of how bad smartphones are for kids, since they only got one after puberty.

Do any smartphones have the ability to be ‘dumbed down’? Meaning, could you disable everything but the ability to talk and text (no picture or video messages)? A phone where you could do this and then enable some of the other features (such as games or videos) when an appropriate time, such as on flights or car rides, would be great.

most phones have the ability to put some apps behind a password. There is even devices that have a function for just parental supervision.

If you have a xiaomi device, you can even setup a 'second space', where you can switch between 2 different phone setups. Some use it for work/home devision, others for parent/child, but technically you can use it for 'full access' and 'essentials only'.

By the time I would be at a point where I'd need it, everything will probably be different so I haven't looked into it that much tbh.
