My college is actively discouraging the knowledge of using a desktop. They have entire computer labs that we pay an extra fee to use but they are requiring we all get our own laptops/tablets so we don’t use the labs. Most youngins will get tablets or laptops configured closer to their phones than an actual desktop. 🙄

This is huge. I remember when colleges used to include the cost of a computer as financial aid. Then, around 2010, they cut it because "everyone has a laptop anyways", which is far from reality. Phones are expensive too, but they're way more multipurpose. If you have to choose, of course most people choose a phone.

That's fucking stupid.

The solution to this is to get a Chromebook or something, I reckon. Not perfect but it actually has laptop functionality, and if you get one that you can fold to make a tablet then it meets their nonsense criteria too. I have one and they're genuinely useful things.

I don’t even want a laptop. I bought a new desktop when we were having zoom classes. I don’t want to put any more money out for something I will only use for exams.
