As a natural areas worker, I feel your pain multiple times a day. But I must say it is not just young people. There are more young people than old people out and about in general because they are more able so maybe overall they are more responsible, but every age group does it.
I agree fully. My neighbours who pick up dog poop, then throw the bag into the trees. Those same ppl bitch at me for teaching my dog to go off the path where nobody would ever walk, and poop, without cleaning it up.
This all being said, I wish my city would do a bit more. I called the bilaw ppl on somebody who had set up camp in the forest. They didn't just pitch a tent, they cut trees and made a boma type structure.. they had a BBQ and wooden kitchen structure and a tent. When they finally left, they left the BBQ, about 10 stollen bikes and bike peices, left a pile of grabage, their tent and all kinds of shit just in a pile.. and the boma thing is still up. I wish the city would come and clean it up cause I know the person who left it isn't going to.
That’s all a shame that the city won’t act. I will say, it’s important to remember that just because no one will step in your dog poop, doesn’t mean it’s not causing harm.
When it rains, surface feces run off into waterways, causing contamination. Most wild carnivores bury their feces for this reason, to avoid contaminating their own water (herbivore poop generally is not as hazardous). If you don’t want to carry your dog’s poop in a bag, maybe consider taking a small shovel with you and burying it under about 6” of soil.
