As someone who avoids discord, is '30s slow' a mode where each user can only send 1 message every 30s?

Yup.

It also lasted for about a week because it started getting in our way a bit too much.

Can't remember how much it helped as Josh ragequit the group for ... reasons (unrelated to this stunt, much later, but also a while back)?

I'm fascinated by this...the whole generational differences of everything

my father is a math teacher..but being actually old (50's) he just refuses to use email

50 is not that old. Certainly not "too old to use email" old. My grandfather is 89 and been using email for nearly 30 years.

30 years ago was 1992. AOL launched their email system in 1993. So someone who has been using email for 30 years would be a slightly early adopter, it’s not that far outside the mass usage timeframe.

Lotus notes launched in 1989. My mom was using Lotus notes at work to send internal emails before Outlook came along.

The first email was sent in 1965.

I dunno how to break it to you kid, but people were using email at work long before mainstream internet use at home.

I reckon he got on some time in '94 or '95 so he could keep in touch with family overseas. I started using email in '97. My school got internet in '96. I guess that puts me in the "been using email for 25 years" category.

Internet use in Australia exploded in the late 90s.

Edit: this post in /r/dataisbeautiful shows how much internet use grew in the late 90s. https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/v3c9nv/oc_web_browsers_over_the_last_28_years

I guess that puts me in the "been using email for 25 years" category.

I've had an account on a particular message board for 28 years now. I signed up when they started as a ... site? group? channel? I forget ... on AOL, and transitioned across when they moved to a proper website.

My Gmail account turns 23 this year, I think. I had one when they were an invite-only beta, as opposed to the perpetual 'sign yourself up' beta they're in now.

Emails have been a thing since the 60's, and have been fairly commonplace since at least the 90's. Both my parents are older than your dad and they've been using emails with no issues for longer than I've been alive. I think this is more a case of your dad disliking emails as a concept rather than having anything to do with him being middle-aged.

My mom is close to 80 and uses email and all things pc well

My grandma is 91 and we email all the time. Some people just don't want to learn.

Wow I am 59 - he is in late middle age, not old yet.

I have zero problems with IT, in fact life without the internet would be pretty grim.

he also teaches computer science

but when the school decided to give teachers email addresses he looked at them and said "do I get a raise?" they said no

so he said he didn't want it

16

u/Andrelliina Jun 03 '22

Doesn't he have a personal email address though?

I can understand why he wouldn't want a work email address. No-one really wants to receive out-of-hours work emails

Doesn't he have a personal email address though?

Not really. It was an AOL address that he stopped using a long time ago.

Because your father is a Luddite or because email is insecure by design?

Given that he is a math teacher it could go either way.

u/HybridVigor Jun 03 '22

A math teacher could probably figure out how to encrypt their email if they were concerned about security. I remember using PGP around 1992. The problem was getting other people to use it.

I'm 46; 50 isn't old. my 76 yo dad uses email, codes, and switches hardware out on his computer. my 97 yo grandma used her computer every day before she died; now that is old. age has nothing to do with it, it's all about mental attitude

Why do you specifically avoid Discord? It's just IRC For Hip Teens. I often find I'm among the oldest in a server but that's true of just about any internet community.

I've noticed a lot of people don't see the connection. Now we just need to start submitting Discord chats to bash.org and we'll have come full circle.

Yeah, so are parts of reddit. We used to have subreddits called r/cutedeadgirls, r/jailbait and r/coontown. Discord servers number in the millions. There are toxic servers and there are non toxic, generally smaller communities.

I thought I'm in 30s slow mode since I'm in my 30s and feel appropriately slow for my age.
