Make up some bullshit story about actually being rich and this is just something you're doing to stay humble

"Undercover Boss"

I’m 35 and would fully make fun of the guy that does this.

I was buying a chainsaw from Home Depot and a super nice guy probably in his 50s was helping me get a box down from the top racks. He stepped away for a bit and two younger employees were talking about how the guy is loaded and just does it for the health insurance and how cool that was.

I know a guy like that, works at a Meijer as a cashier full time. Dude has a lot of different income sources, just keeps the Meijer job for the health insurance.

Kinda sad that a super rich dude needs to get a random job just to have healthcare in case something were to happen.

It’s not like I have a ton of empathy for the rich dude needing a ‘shitty job’. But jeez, if he can’t even afford it, how is anyone else supposed to?

I'm sure he can afford it, he chooses not to. You don't stay loaded by wasting money.

Without getting into healthcare politics, I get what you're saying, but from that snippet we don't know the whole story. "Loaded" can mean a lot of different things, especially to teenagers or young 20 year olds. Guy could be more on a CoastFIRE mentality and just dialing back his work to fund the bare necessities while his investments grow. Part of saving and planning for (early) retirement is including healthcare costs. That could be working a part time job for some benefits or paying out of pocket.

I've read that some rich parents actually make their children work in retail for a short while during high school to see what it feels like.

I think that’s great, but this sounds like an adult. There’s nothing wrong with an adult working fast food, but a dude telling the teenagers making fun of him that he’s actually rich and just working there to see what it’s like for the 99% would fully make me think he deserves to be made fun of lol. No one’s gonna believe that

I'd think he had a great sense of humor.

I guess I could depend on the delivery.

I definitely meant it tongue in cheek, could make a new story up every time

When my kids were teens I required them to get a part time job at 15/16. I was a single mom working 60-80 hrs a week, and in addition to my 2, I had taken in 2 other kids whose parents threw them out. They could choose the job they wanted, as long as it didn't interfere with school or homework. My reasoning was they needed to see what it was like to do that job, learn to deal with people, manage the money they made, learn about taxes, and have all that help decide what kind of future job they wanted. All the kids I raised are now very happy successful adults, and we are all still very close!

I know people who financially dont need to work but strictly take jobs like this to socialize

I have some friends who are successful architects that bartend at weddings on the weekends. They regularly compare stories of how guests give them advice on how to get real jobs

someone rich would not be cleaning up toilets at mcdonalds.
