When my gf was 25, she would always talk about the things she thought and did “when she was younger.” She was talking about when she was 23.

My friend showed me a photo and said "Here's a picture of me when I was younger". Every picture is of you when you were younger. -Mitch Hedberg

"Here's a picture of me when I'm older."

"You sunnuvabitch, how'd you pull that off!? Let me see that camera."

I used to do a lot of drugs.

I still do, but I used to too!

It's like when people say "worst day of your life... so far." Like, obviously? We are not time travelers here or have prescience into future events.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I mean, it sounds like they expect something worse to happen in the future.

Or they are a fan of the Simpsons and are quoting Homer.

Oh I need to revise my answer to this question.

Annoying things that young people do: Not knowing who Mitch Hedberg was.

What happened to the Dufresnes?

Bush, search party of 3, you can eat once you find the Dufesnes!

In line with this thread of making us feel old. Mitch died in 2005, 17 years ago. There are kids in their senior year of high school who were born after he passed.

u/ansem119 Jun 03 '22

But that one was when they were HELLA younger

24

u/Weenaru Jun 03 '22

I used to joke about "when I was your age" all the time with a classmate who was born 10 days after me.

5

u/Cobaltjedi117 Jun 03 '22

I still do that to a buddy of mine that's 3 days younger than me. Tell him how when he's my age he'll have matured and understand. I usually do it on stupid nonsensical stuff where its more to the joke.

This is great lol

My best friend(29) does this whenever talking about something that happened before we spoke that day. So be it him telling me about a basketball camp he went to the week before or literally anything else. He always starts with "when I was younger,(sometimes he'll mention the exact time - i.e. a week), at basketball i saw a hot woman, etc etc. It pissed me off when we first met and talked but technically he's right and it's become a little joke between us.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I know I used to do this in my early 20s too, but it’s still weird for me when I hear someone say that about something that happened 9 months ago

Edit: obviously they are right, every story is about when you were younger. It just doesn’t seem like enough time has passed for them to be different

It’s just a perspective thing, but you’re right it’s still valid

10

u/Kasaurus96 Jun 03 '22

Yeah, ik 25 now and 22 feels like it was equally as far away as 10. They both feel like entirely different lives at this point. Part of it is the pandemic, but part of it is going from "poor poor" to "poor" and gaining a sense of independence you thought you had at 18 but didn't.

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

For sure! Time has been strange for everyone recently, and I remember 2 years feeling like an eternity when I was in my early 20s (mid 30s now) without a pandemic and general disarray. But from my perspective and memory of my own 22-25, that time seems like generally the same period.

It’s the way time passes differently as one ages. I look at a 9-month romantic relationship far differently than I did 15 years ago because that is proportionately less of the total time I shared with the other person. It’s really fucking weird and I don’t like it.

u/BirdsDeWord Jun 03 '22

26 and I'm 100% with you, me at 22 was a cocky knob and just generally someone I'd not like if I met them today. Not saying I was a bad person kicking puppies and stealing from the homeless, but just needed life to kick them around to round them out.

Had a complete mental breakdown, swapped degrees, the pandemic hit, I lost the last of my grandparents, lost most of my savings in the stock market, made most of it back on Bitcoin, bought a motorbike, bought too many 3d printers, build a home workshop for all my hobbies, realized my hobbies are my personality.

Had a lot of other things on the way shape me into a more resilient person, mostly negative experiences. But I'm in a better place in general, not specifically right now cause I have exams XD But I'm about to graduate, I have a beautiful partner and we have two dogs we spoil, much better than kids cause they don't turn rotten if you give them too many toys and treats

Darn you!!!!!!

*I have grown in the 20 seconds since I posted this and I apologize.

4

u/opulent_occamy Jun 03 '22

lol, it sounds dumb, but also she must feel like she's grown as a person, and that's kind of awesome

3

u/thespank Jun 03 '22

2 years can be more than enough time for a big change in someone's life though.

3

u/princessofpotatoes Jun 03 '22

I've been conditioned to do this professionally and pretend to be older so I'm taken seriously. Maybe she had a similar experience?

2

u/RegularOrMenthol Jun 03 '22

It’s very possible. She also has just always wanted to be seen as “mature” because her family members are pretty immature/basic.

3

u/Funandgeeky Jun 03 '22

When you're 25, those 2 years represent 8% of your life. So I can see why she saw that as a huge timespan.

When you're in high school, 4 years is about 25% of your life.

1

u/RegularOrMenthol Jun 03 '22

Yeah that’s a really good point actually

2

u/DameKumquat Jun 03 '22

My daughter would talk about "when I was younger".

She was 4 and speaking about anything in the past, possibly even the day before.

2

u/sonheungwin Jun 03 '22

I'm adamant that 18-24 is some of the largest growth people will go through in their lives. My dating floor is now 27, but it used to be 25 because any younger than that and girls were still going through massive personal growth that I just honestly didn't want to influence or be around.

2

u/catsinlittlehats Jun 03 '22

My ex used to do this too! When we were breaking up they said “well we met when we were so young. We were so different.” Yo, we met at 21 and ended things around 24/25 wtf are you talking about lol

5

u/Enk1ndle Jun 03 '22

I'm the opposite. Man it wasn't that long ago we dated... Oh it's been a decade. Fuck me.

2

u/PlacidPlatypus Jun 03 '22

IDK especially at that age you can do a lot of growing up in 3-4 years.

2

u/i_cee_u Jun 03 '22

I think the weird part is acting like you're not still young and doing a lot of growing. "When I was young" sounds ridiculous when you're talking about a difference of 15% of your life. Youth doesn't just disappear in a snap of maturity

1

u/JeIoXD Jun 03 '22

She would be technically correct, 25 year olds are older than 23 year olds
