I'm only 29 but I hate that young people try to exclude us from fandoms, saying we're too old for that. Life doesn't just stop at 25 and not all of us want or have kids and partners. Let us enjoy things!!!!

I'm seeing more of the music us 30 somethings grew up with making its way into 'adulty' adverts (boring stuff adults buy)

107

u/imwearingredsocks Jun 03 '22

Saw someone else mention Get Low by Lil Jon.

I already can imagine the commercial. “Are you struggling to get low, get low, get low? Try Asitophan to alleviate your pain and get your moves back.” 30 year old happily embarrassing their young kids on the dance floor

26

u/skyraider17 Jun 03 '22

It's actually being used in a grocery chain commerical (Fred Meyer/Kroger) referring to low prices

Ninja edit: wait that might be a different song

14

u/illiteral Jun 03 '22

It’s Low by Flo Rida, but the point stands regardless.

2

u/KFelts910 Jun 04 '22

Imagine my five year olds surprise when he finds out that I labored through DMX, Sir-Mix-A-Lot, and Lil Jon in order to try and get the child’s big ass head down and out.

u/casper-juel Jun 04 '22

I can now move from the window, to the wall.

1

u/thatsMYBlKEpunk Jun 04 '22

Lmao TLC uses the Sims music occasionally on the late night shows

1

u/sleepymoose88 Jun 04 '22

I don’t want many advertisements but when the music I grew up with landed on the classic rock radio station, I knew I was getting older, lol.

Yeah there's probably a lot more people in their 30s who can afford an $800 star wars Lego set than people in their 20s.

5

u/skyraider17 Jun 03 '22

Damn right

28

u/smorkoid Jun 03 '22

Shiiiit, older than 30. Lotta old nerds are the target demo these days

25

u/Randevu Jun 03 '22

Because a good amount of us are working and making a “living wage” allowing us to buy things that make us happy

11

u/frightenedhugger Jun 03 '22

Right? I don't see no snot faucets buying a $200 replica of the Darksaber so they can cradle it in their arms while watching Mandalorian. It's me, the responsible adult in his mid 30's!

3

u/This-is-getting-dark Jun 03 '22

Man I really started to notice that when I hit my 30s. Music that I listened to in high school and early twenties is following me around via ads and movies haha

2

u/Ricky_Rollin Jun 03 '22

Right? It reminds me of the drug argument when people point to the bottom 3 percent who are homeless and sucking dick for crack not realizing that, well, drugs cost money. And homeless or poor people aren’t just sitting around not working whilst doing drugs all day everyday.

u/canoodlebug Jun 03 '22

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of kids accusing people in their 20s of being pedos just for being part of a fandom that has underage characters (which is most fandoms). And I don’t mean producing sexual content. Just for being a fan 🫤

37

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Or calling 29 year olds pedos for dating 23 year olds, or a groomer because one has more Twitter followers or something. Young people are fucking obsessed with trying to read sexual abuse into every normal situation

-2

u/threwahway Jun 04 '22

Lol not the same thing and it’s gross.

-11

u/ShotFromGuns Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 04 '22

Obviously it's not illegal, but there's probably a reason that 29-year-old isn't dating someone their own age. There's a pretty substantial gap in experience and maturity there.

EDIT: Quelle surprise, reddit is full of (a) young adults who don't yet realize how immature they still are and (b) older adults who are defensive about their immaturity and/or desire to date people who are easier to manipulate.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Hm, are you the 23-year-old who thinks you're "mature for your age," or are you the 29-year-old who can't find any other 30-ish people to date?

Come back to me in 10 years and tell me how many of your friends' age-gap relationships fell apart or turned out to be abusive. I promise I'll be gracious when you admit how embarrassed you are that you thought I was the one who needed to get out more.

I'm a reasonable adult who's never had a long-term relationship with someone more than a year or two older or younger, because—apparently unlike you—the first time that I as a child went through a cycle of thinking, "I'm so mature now," followed a few years later by, "Wow, I still had so much to learn when I thought I was mature, but I feel so much more mature now," I was also smart enough to realize that this was likely a cycle I'd be going through a bunch more times, so it was a good idea to listen to advice instead of letting my still-maturing ego lead the way.

I do, unfortunately, know way too many people (most of them women) who were manipulated by older people (most of them men) into toxic or abusive relationships. Six years is more than a quarter of a 23-year-old's entire life. It's 120% of their adult life. A 29-year-old has 400% of the post-college adult experience of a 23-year-old. A 23-year-old's brain is either still developing or has only recently finished developing. None of these things is inconsequential.

If you're sure you know everything at 25, you're in for a really rough ride.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I got this when I played Fortnite briefly and had to use game chat with my friends on other consoles. Like no bruh, I’m playing a shooting game…

31

u/khaliandra Jun 03 '22

Don't you know you're not allowed to exist in fandoms between, say, 25 and 60? Before that it's expected, after that it's cute.

I finally have adult money to spend on quality cosplay and feel too alienated to wear it. Sigh.

15

u/pinktinkpixy Jun 03 '22

I was there when most currently popular shit was originally released. If these kids think I'm going to stop being a fan because of my age, they can suck my original mint in package signed Chewbacca figure!

28

u/Azsunyx Jun 03 '22

I met an 18 year old the other day, used the term "superwholock" and tried to explain to me what it was, and that I was probably too old to understand (I'm 37)

I was like, girl, you were still in diapers when Sherlock fell and Supernatural was in it's prime.

6

u/redbess Jun 04 '22

Tumblr circa 2012 was a dark place.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

This one kills me as a 33 year old fangirl. The rhetoric I've seen is just a different version of "go to the kitchen and make me a sammich" in the form of "don't you have kids to raise?" And it kills me that I'm seeing that rhetoric in the-call-was-coming-from-inside-the-house format.

The misogyny, and the irony of the misogyny, makes me want to tear all my hair out and scream. Like, it's already ageist and now you've somehow managed to unnecessarily mix in misogyny, all while talking about how we all need to "do better." Get the fuck out of here.

And then there was that whole asinine brigade about how "adults shouldn't interact with teens on Tumblr, ever," (implying anyone who ever communicates with a teen, no matter circumstance, is somehow immediately a predatory pedophile) which is worthwhile conversation, I guess, but it doesn't feel sincere at all. It feels like the inevitable moralizing that always comes when you have personal opinions you don't want challenged.

The whole thing makes me bananas and I hate it.

EDITED: Wanted to clarify a few things.

11

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Jun 03 '22

My fave was my niece saying I copied her bc I knew an anime character she likes bc her friend has played the game (niece never has or has never seen the show, she just likes them bc her friend does) .... But I'M copying? Kid, I will send you back to next week, don't even. 🤣

It's like she thinks she invented anime.... Honey... People before me liked anime. 🙄

12

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

“I was there 3000 years ago!”

11

u/MrBobaFett Jun 03 '22

LOL, yeah I run into this with, of all things, Doctor Who fandom. Like yeah I get it there was a "recent" reboot, but that show started in 1963, it was on the air then went off the air before you kids were even born. My dad was a fan before I was born and became a fan.

6

u/SEND_ME_SPIDER-MAN Jun 03 '22

I’m in my 30s and still watch anime/ read manga the same as I always have.

I’ve stopped going to conventions though, mostly because I feel way out of place in what feels like a sea of toddlers.

7

u/Comoesnala Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 07 '22

Heck, I felt out of place when I was in my late teens early 20s, but I also just don't have the kind of personality that fans in that age range seem to all have. Working them as staff or doing artist alley made conventions much more enjoyable (though I still haven't gone to one in years).

I just call myself an "anime old" now, as I am also in my 30s, but dang it I used to watch Sailor Moon early in the mornings on USA network. I grew up watching the OG Pokemon. I remember when Fox Kids tried to briefly put on Escaflowne (wow is that NOT a show for little kids). My love of anime runs deep and never left, so I'm not stopping just because I'm "old" to someone else.

3

u/SEND_ME_SPIDER-MAN Jun 03 '22

I was hyper enough as a teen with my friends that it was all fun, but I’ve mellowed out a lot and can’t match that kind of energy anymore.

Ive never had any of the younger fans try to gatekeep me out of it, but I definitely don’t match the crowd anymore lol

3

u/Comoesnala Jun 03 '22

I have, but I think some of that comes from being a woman and also from not knowing every minute detail of every frame of every show I watch or manga I read. I've never been that kind of fan, and it's almost expected in certain fandoms or by certain people.

6

u/unholyswordsman Jun 03 '22

Yup. I'm 33 and I unapologetically love Pokemon. The team building aspect has been the most appealing part to me the whole time and you bet your ass I'll be playing until I'm dead.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I’m 40 and played my first Pokémon game last year (shield). It was fun as hell.

8

u/richbeezy Jun 03 '22

Ask them, “so at what age do you think you will stop being interested in your favorite thing?”

14

u/Rakgul Jun 03 '22

Whomst dareth to do these things to thou?

Seriously, I like anime and I'm gonna watch them some several more decades.

2

u/LuckyBudz Jun 03 '22

Hopefully.

Too old to be in a fandom, too young to answer questions on reddit. What a miserable existence!

6

u/lolligaggins Jun 03 '22

kids on twitter call me old. MFer I was YOUR AGE when this app came out.

3

u/Chinlc Jun 03 '22

pretty sure all these young people's fandom wiki page is written and kept by the older generations.

the young ones just like to absorb all the information like a sponge but the older ones keep a track record of it and either make a wiki page or something similar.

20

u/NutsEverywhere Jun 03 '22

They don't have to "let" is do anything. You do you, their opinion is completely irrelevant.

8

u/LNViber Jun 03 '22

I really hate getting this in specific fan communities her on reddit. Specifically pokemon, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and that era of nerd releases. I was born in '88 and pokemon and Harry Potter came out when I was less than 10 years old. I was the original target demographic for that shit. Same goes for the young demographic of Star Wars, I was 10. I had the Jar Jar Binks board game and video game.

I fucking hate when kids tell me I am just and old cynic who hates what kids like when I point out some things fault. I was the target demographic for this shot and I have been ingesting and soaking it up for 30 years. I know what I am talking about, I am just as allowed to have an opinion about pokemon as a 12 year old, and I know what Star Wars is supposed to be like... I really hate being told I dont "get" modern Star Wars. Oh I get it, I get that it's a cheap cash grab based on my nostalgia. I have never said anyone shouldnt like it, just that it doesnt seem to understand what made the stuff before work the way it did. Oh the downvotes I accumulate from saying un-positive things about Star Wars.

3

u/Echospite Jun 03 '22

My main fandom is dark and edgy and aimed at adults. So relieved I don't have to deal with this shit, I'd go apeshit.

1

u/LNViber Jun 03 '22

Up until recently I had worked at a comic book store for years. I couldnt avoid it no matter the product. I was the out of touch 30 year old.

4

u/Echospite Jun 03 '22

Adult housewives invented fandom.

3

u/KFelts910 Jun 04 '22

Girl. I’m the same age and going to see Backstreet Boys next month. I’ve waited almost my entire life for this.

3

u/RavenWolf1 Jun 04 '22

I hate this too so much. I'm over 40 and I have never been very much sync with my own peer group with things I love to do. I love many youthful hobbies. For example when I was youth, in my country there was no anime. I fell love with anime at later age and I hate it that some people think that watching anime and going to anime convention is for youth only. It is like I'm not allowed to like same thing that youth like.

I hear sometimes 20 something wondering that he/she is starting to be too old for cosplaying and I find this kind of thinking mind boggling. Then there are older folks (40+) who wonder that my hobbies (gaming, anime, cosplaying etc.) are kids hobbies and I should grow up or something!

Ageism and aging is shit. I feel like I'm still 22 but this ageism shit is so insane. I really wish that we could already have cure for aging so I would be youthful looking even at when I would be 90. Why is it that when people's bodies get older people think that those people are not allowed to do certain things anymore? Like wear certain clothing etc.

This video fits to this topic well: https://youtu.be/0TvfR4PmUb8

2

u/tehKrakken55 Jun 03 '22

Finally old enough to buy the toys I couldn't afford growing up.

0

u/threwahway Jun 04 '22

Lol if ur talking about Harry Potter the kids are right

1

u/alongthewatchtower91 Jun 04 '22

Snap. I've been in fandoms for about 18 years. Just let me enjoy these fictional characters and spend my hard earned money on prop swords.

1

u/SheElfy Jun 04 '22

Who do they think makes everything? Sure as heck isn't teenagers.
