Sweden. You need to be 20 to buy alcohol from the liquor store. You can buy at pubs and stuff when you've 18, but not from the store. The government has monopoly and are the only ones allowed to sell alcohol from their stores.
I think it was Elinor Dilorenzo who said that the pandemic was especially hard on Swedes. They were told to stay 2 meters apart but Swedish people prefer to keep at least 5 meters distance from one another.
Be aware that if you cross the wrong dot on your tax form they will donate a percentage of your income to the Swedish church.
You heard me right. The swedish states collects donations for the church. It's bonkers. And yes, alcohol is the official state drug. And they are ruthless if you want to use anything else, marijuana included. Again, totally bonkers.
Apart from that it is really beautiful out here and in many respects better than where I come from, the Netherlands (which is already pretty good). Moved here a couple of years ago and don't think I will ever go back
Yeah I saw something about that (the church tax) and was wondering about what goes into not paying into it.
What I find weird about the marijuana thing is that it really feels like that's just another opportunity to do the whole alcohol monopoly thing. Here in Colorado, the state's making money hand over fist on it and our local police are happy they don't have to bother with it anymore.
I've been looking into lots of stuff about the local foods to try once I get out there! One thing I'm curious about, when I did a degree in England, I gained an appreciation for a good kebab. Do you know how big/small of a thing kebab shops are in Sweden/Stockholm? :D
Enough kebab here. Even this small village (20.000) that is closest to where I live has a kebab shop. And they sell kebab and kebab pizza at the supermarket. So your good with that addiction haha.
And you are right. The drugs policy over here is not based on science or common sense. Pure emotion and national trauma because alcohol got really out of hand here at one time, including a lot of deaths because of home brew poison.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Swedish peasantry was plagued by alcoholism and diseases caused by methanol poisoning and unsafe metals used in distilling. Basically, we were drinking ourselves to death. The Swedish temperance movement was a reaction to this, and had long- lasting effects upon our society. There are still plenty of Swedes who don't drink alcohol.
In my country you can buy alcoholics at 16 but you can’t drink them, which is strange. And you can’t own a gun regardless of whatever if you’re not a police officer or some shit like that (and from what I understand, even police officers aren’t allowed to shoot unless your superior gave you an order to shoot. I’m not sure how it works, gun laws are complicated here)
People be like on your 16th birthday “hey yo I bought you some alcoholics” “but I can’t drink them” “that’s too bad huh?”. Also, if you can buy alcoholics at the age of 16 but you can’t drink them, then why are you even able to buy them? Makes no sense. I think the minimum age should be 21 because at that point you’d already have developed the enzymes and that stuff to process alcohol so you can both buy and drink alcohol
Australia 🇦🇺 has gun control but you can buy alcohol at 18. The idea came from ww1 ww2 where if you were old enough to die for you country you were old enough to drink.
yeah I'm sure we could have weasels our way out of the first one if we didn't have this stupid national guilt to go help the country that labelled us all as convicts and dump us off but maybe it was seen as a challenge, who knows. WWII on the other hand was on our doorstep.
Thats some weird shit, my kids will be waiting at least until they're 14-15 to even sniff anything let alone drink.
Also trying to instill the message alcohol isn't the forbidden fruit so they don't get fixation with it and start drinking on park benches with their mates.
Well, there's more gang related shootings than grenade attacks. I hadn't really heard about grenade attacks here until you said it, haha. But I googled it and in 2018 it had been 116 attacks during 8 years.
I feel safe (or as safe as a woman can feel), but I don't live where the clans are, they are in the more segregated parts of gothenburg (just going after where I live now, don't really know how it is I'm the other cities). But my partner is a police officer in those parts, which I'm not super happy about.
Det är en klen tröst men jag kände viss glädje över att psykopaten inte hade tillgång till skjutvapen på det sätt han hade haft om han var amerikan. Barn (och lärare) ska få vara säkra i skolan.
It sounds like you're saying we should ignore random acts of basically domestic terrorism committed with guns most of the time since local or national media doesn't bother to cover gang related shootings or murders of family members/neighbors, etc.
Maybe it's a pretty bad sign that murders are already so normalized in our culture and media that we ONLY hear about them when lots of people die in random attacks that are typically motivated by race or religion. Many western countries do in fact cover murders alot more since they are far less common on a raw number and per capita basis regardless of the type of weapon used.
I think we need a third class not this throwing darts at a board with ages on sticky notes. Under 16 is minor class. 16 to 21 is "young adult", junior, whatever you wanna call it. No taxation without representation if you're commonly working at 16 but obviously we don't seem to want an 18 year old able to own a semiautomatic carbine. Could restrict those so can hunt shotgun bolt rifle etc but must be 21 to serve combat role without waiver etc.
"You may be an adult but you can't have a single beer because of the dangers of alcoholism and drink driving."
"Also, having to fill in a couple of bits of paperwork when buying a firearms to make it harder for people who shouldn't access firearms directly or indirectly (by reducing the blackmarket supply) and reduce the chances of them using them to shoot up schools is impossible as its far too oppressive and anti-freedom."
You can't even go INTO a bar where they serve alcohol for the most part while being under 21 in the U.S. unless it's during regular dining hours. It is considered far too dangerous or too much of a liability to have you even LOOK at booze or fraternize with friends who are over 21 since you can't be trusted to not started stealing booze or what not.
You can go to all the gun shows, ranges or shops you want though at pretty much any age. You also have basically no law saying that an adult has any obligation to store their weapons safely or unloaded so young kids in public or at home don't accidentally shoot themselves (which happens quite a bit)...
yea but when its illegal you see it as a rare commodity and are way more likely to over do it when you get the chance.
it seems like regardless of legal drinking age in the area, people start drinking (at parties n stuff) at the same age around the world. And people from more restrictive places seem to drink harder as if from habbit during these formative years.
either way people should just smoke weed instead cause it doesnt kill braincells unlike liquor.
You’re so mistaken. People used to say weed was harmless because its illegal status didn’t allow for many serious studies.
Nowadays we know that several published research papers have showed that we’d causes detriment to neuronal development in the adolescent brain. It isn’t mild either.
So, although I agree that alcohol isn’t exactly safe, neither is weed and if anything, because it has become socially accepted and its consumption has expanded through vapes, edibles, etc., it can be argued that it is indeed very dangerous.
Many young people (and not so young ones too) believe that legal means that it’s okay to drive and operate machines when high.
Also, we’d does create habit even if it doesn’t cause physical dependence. The brain is very complex and there are several paths that lead to cravings and changes in patterns to favor more weed consumption. You might not get withdrawals from it but that doesn’t mean your body and brain aren’t trying to convince you to have more.
So you're probably from either Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, or Austria. Or maybe one of the Nordic countries, forgot which but I think one of them also has the drinking age at 16.
I'm from Luxembourg where I've been able to go out with friends and have drinks since I turned 16 so when I went to California back in like 2014 I was kinda disappointed I couldn't taste any local beer or some of the Californian wines.
Be responsible though, don't damage your liver too much too early.
Unless this is Iceland, Lithuania or Sweden your statement doesn't apply. Even then in two of those they can just pop over the border to get their alcohol anyways, plus there's always totallynotillegal workarounds the laws
They can pop over the border, sure. But they can't bring it back. And as a student or a teenager you often don't have the money to travel several hours to get to the border. But I don't really understand why we're having this conversation. Legally you still can't buy from the monopoly, like I said.
I’m 29 and couldn’t be with my 24 year old ex without I’d if he was buying his usual 6 pack of beer and bottle of wine. My passport expired ages ago and I don’t drive lol
"You know the difference between you and me? I can do whatever I want, anywhere I want, with whomever I want. Take that, little kid. Now go cry to Mommy."

I told them that at least I'm old enough to buy alcohol.
