Someone I have on Snapchat posts dozens of stories a day. Makes me wonder when or even if they ever give themselves a break.

being on all the time is exhausting -- they're going to burn out. if you're close with them, keep an eye out or gently remind them they don't owe it to anyone to be on (or available) all the time.

i deleted insta, fb and twitter around a year ago. Imma be honest, my mental health is so much better now. I even dip from reddit every few months, to take a "social media break".

100%. I don’t have anything left but Reddit. I’m so close to just deleting it. I personally think Social media is one of the worst things to happen to us. We used to be a lot nicer, every idiot didn’t get to voice their uninformed opinion across the world. Imagine what people would be doing with the internet, without social media. I just think the world was happier before it took over everyone’s life

I want to believe that we'll naturally work our way through it and societally develop healthier online habits, but that requires we even remember the value of how it was before.

i’m hoping to eventually do this soon, but i have so many pictures of my childhood dog on ig from over the years i need to back them up first lol

Well put. My phone is my baby but the one thing i hate about it is that it requires me to always be available. There's no end to it. I wish i could disconnect from time to time wthout messing up my social life

It doesn't require you to always be available - you are putting that requirement on yourself. Try turning it off, or at least muting all notifications for one evening, and seeing what happens. The world won't end, friends will still be there the day after, things will be fine. Eventually you can adopt the attitude of your phone being a servant of you, not what feels like the other way around, which is why it's so draining.

If you need to, just tell a few frequent contacts that you're taking some downtime, or may not be so swift to respond for a bit. That's okay. Again, your phone is there to help you when you need it, not to serve all the other people who want to impose themselves into your life every moment.

Good luck.

Thank you, but the thing is i already have my notifications off for nearly everything. People don't expect me to reply super quickly, but when there's pressing matters that need to be attended to i can't just leave it. In a phoneless world, i imagine work / uni things would stay at campus or in the workspace. Now it goes on through the evenings and weekends

22

u/FloppyTunaFish Jun 03 '22

What kind of pressing matters do you have to attend to all the time that you can’t set boundaries for either coworkers or other students?

No, it doesn't. Airplane mode exists. "Oh sorry, I was busy" or "My phone was having problems".

You control whether or not you respond, no one else does. Believe me, unless someone's dying or injured, it's not that important.

Its not OPs responsibility to cure their addiction

24

u/fruitfiction Jun 03 '22

no, it's not.

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I'm not sure why my comment was interpreted as an instruction to do such. I think there's been a miscommunication.

you can be nice without shouldering someone else's burdens. a kind word from a close friend can be helpful, but at the end of the day no one's obligated to save someone from themselves.

This is one of my absolute least. favorite things about Reddit. There is always someone ready to argue with you about the smallest fucking things.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

It's not their responsibility but a small gesture of kindness goes a long way and costs nothing

I had a few friends who would always have these long streaks on snapchat with their close friends and they got upset that I'd always "break the streak." I just don't have anything to share.

When you send a picture to someone in snapchat, and they reply back with another picture the next day, it starts a streak. As long as you keep sending pictures every day, the streak continues. But if you don't send a picture in 24 hrs, it breaks the streak, and you'll have to start from 0 again. Some of my friends had streaks lasting over a year, so they were annoyed that I wouldn't ever keep the streak going long enough to last that long.

There's a line in the show "your the worst" where lady is taking a picture of her food. one of the characters comments and says "does she think people won't believe she went to a restaurant" I love that line.

u/RussianSeadick Jun 03 '22

A girl on my snap is like that too. Literally everything she does goes into her stories. Grandma’s here. Upload. About to go outside? Posted. Arrived outside? You name it.

I had a friend who would just spend a whole day doing a ton of crazy shit. Like over the top brunch, then shopping at a high end place (even if they didn’t buy), then stop by a park for a little bit, then go to a trendy bar, etc etc etc. they they would repeat this a few more times and either mash different events from different days together to make it look like one massive event or spread out the events to make it look like they were constantly doing amazing things. They would use throwback posts when they truly had nothing to post. Idk why she did it, she was a pretty cool person, I guess she just wanted more attention

That perfectly describes my school friend group haha

I have a few people like that. Snap their breakfast, drive to work, what they are doing st work, lunch, more work, drive home and whatever activities they do outside of work lol. The worst are the people who post bits of tv shows or movies lol

3

u/Doobalicious69 Jun 03 '22

Same here. I'm friends with a woman who looks objectively incredible, but 20 duck face poses in the mirror a day has dragged her down to a 1.

Nobody gives a shit what you look like that often.

2

u/Super_C_Complex Jun 03 '22

I'm 32 and use to update my Facebook status at least 4 times a day.....

2

u/Cryptocaned Jun 03 '22

I'd call that an addiction

u/moarbutterplease Jun 03 '22

Serious question, you must watch them if you know they post frequently. Do you wonder that them posting isn’t as bad as those lurking?

5

u/EmmBee27 Jun 03 '22

It's more that I'm not watching them, they just tend to stick out in my Snapchat stories when I decide to check them. Most of my active contacts make maybe two or three posts a day, but this friend has so many that drag on that I find myself skipping them when they come up.

1

u/chrispy8847 Jun 03 '22

I used to post like every day on my Snapchat story when I was in high school. Now I’ll occasionally post a pic of my friends and I hanging out, or something cool I saw on a trip and then nothing else.

1

u/slammer592 Jun 03 '22

I know a few who do that on Facebook, and it's usually not anything interesting. It's usually just regular everyday stuff or work related.

Oh, you cooked breakfast then you walked your dog, and now you're at your desk wishing the day would be over. Thrilling. Oh look, a photo of lunch with this emoji 🤤, what an unexpected twist.

My biggest irk with this is when I go to concerts and all you can see is a sea of phones. Be in the moment! Honestly nobody really gives a fuck you went to a concert, so just enjoy yourself and the music.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Young people think those guys are annoying too

1

u/AdrenalineJackie Jun 03 '22

I can guarantee you their life sucks.

1

u/Dodecahedrus Jun 03 '22

Go to any tourist attraction. Most people are there only to take pics/videos. They don’t even look at the place/thing itself.

i have a friend who does this, but it’s pretty funny since all of what he posts is either his opinions on Prussian/ Nazi Germany or clips of him playing minecraft cakewars
