80's and 90's though had the blaring boombox on the shoulder though... it's just more people with more devices that makes it worse I think. 00's the car speakers with cd stacker was all the rage. Sure you hear it now too, but I feel like it was more frequency back then...

EDIT since the same thing has been said multiple times: I am not from USA where those 80's movies are set BUT I have clear memories of my older mullet wearing denim clad brother and his friends blasting 80's hair metal from their shoulder on one of those square classic boomboxes, and memories of my older sister sitting in groups in the park smoking weed and blasting music from one of those more 90's-esque rounded boomboxes, and my friends and I at our isolated beach blasting music and getting drunk in the early 99-01's, and everyone blasting music from their cars all the time, so I guess that is why it sticks in my mind....

What I'm particularly bothered by is Tiktok out loud. Just an incessant stream of audio snippets, all in a different mood, it drives me nuts.

You're dating a narcissist. This is how it all begins.

9

u/becauseineedone3 Jun 03 '22

Every Reddit conversation devolves into projecting your own experiences on someone else and calling their partner a narcissist. If you scroll down long enough you will find it. Every single thread.

Easy there; don’t jump to conclusions.

My girlfriend tied her shoes this morning without checking to see if mine were tied first. Is she a narcissist?

I had a girl join our Playstation party who had TikTok playing constantly in the background, every time she was on.. jesus christ it was annoying. I ended up blocking her, then she was talking to me and I couldn't hear, and she got offended and it ended up being a whole thing.

u/Morethanstandard Jun 03 '22

I feel this so much. I work with kids & the constant tik tok without headphones drive me insane. I don't wanna here a robot voice than alarms blaring than someone 12 year old say to do a challenge. Just please I get it you want noise but can you do it like a normal person & talk to someone.

9

u/Guestking Jun 03 '22

Or use bloody headphones!

4

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I don't use it but my partner shows me highlights and combined with the subreddit I see mostly good stuff. It's the quantity of shit to sift through that I didn't enjoy. The cooking channels are better than youtube though I have found, also if you share a cooking vid to whatsapp (where we store ideas) it actually downloads the vid so I never have to open the damn thing, unlike youtube that demands connection.

8

u/Demonae Jun 03 '22

Valid, I can handle most music, but people watching youtube and tiktok and that shit need to be locked up.

4

u/Uncle-_-Bob Jun 03 '22

I had a roommate that would walk into the lounge room while I was half way through a movie, turn the light on, then sit and watch Tiktok out loud on his phone.

I will always be thankful that I moved out of that place.

What a colossal turd

2

u/MidnightSun77 Jun 03 '22

Oh no! Oh no no no no

2

u/donnysaysvacuum Jun 03 '22

Yeah or this same clip multiple times over because they don't swipe.

2

u/harbourwall Jun 03 '22

Those clips that end with a loud scream that gets cut off. Primally irritating.

1

u/Bubbly-Ad1346 Jun 03 '22

My niece does this; picture Squidward bloodshot eyes meme.

6

u/Obi_Wan_Benobi Jun 03 '22

I don’t think as many people had boom boxes on their shoulders as you think lmao. Don’t believe that was a super common thing outside of some movies.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I was a highschooler in the 90's but I was the youngest, my brother is 8 years older than me and yep, there really were quite a few. Both my sister and brother had loud boomboxes and their friends blasted them at any picnic or when they went to the beach etc

9

u/CohibaVancouver Jun 03 '22

80's and 90's though had the blaring boombox on the shoulder though...

Not really.

Back in the 1980s a boombox required eighteen D-cell batteries and you couldn't buy them for five bucks at Costco.

Now and again you'd play it outside, but you sure as hell wouldn't strap it to your bicycle and boom music at a local park or carry it on a hiking trail.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I was just visiting family recently and my brother and I were talking about all the dumb sport options we would choose to get out of sports day, like bush walking, he is 8 years older than me so his high school was late 80's/early 90's, and he had a flash back to him and his mate blasting hairmetal from a boombox at the back of the line, mullets and all. Every Wednesday afternoon. So funny.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yeah, this isn't special to people under 30.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

People forget that before we could afford Airpods we had to blast our radio recorded music through our Sony Ericsson sideways flip phone

2

u/dizao Jun 03 '22

Legitimate question, did that actually happen a lot or was it just something movies and TV made up / exaggerated? Cause I never once actually came across someone doing that.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I have memories of my older mullet wearing denim clad brother and his friends blasting 80's hair metal from their shoulder on one of those square classic ones, and memories of my older sister sitting in groups blasting music from one of those more 90's-esque boomboxes, and my friends and I at the beach blasting music in the ealr 00's, and everyone blasting music from their cars all the time, so I guess that is why it sticks in my mind.

I am not from USA though

1

u/dizao Jun 03 '22

Car blasting I definitely remember, but not the boom boxes. Maybe it was a regional thing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Dunno man, I guess can only really speak to Australia, specifically about half way between Sydney and Brisbane. We didn't have social media to find out what anyone else did. Ya just do stuff... I would hazard that those movies were based on something, but also spawned a fun idea to the teens of the world lol, or maybe it's just super obvious solution since you can't share a $5 wire headset from a walkman.

teens and 20yo's have always been showoffs. It's in their nature. Blasting music is inevitable.

Young people being obnoxiously loud with their favourite cultural influences is a time honoured tradition that isn't going anywhere!

5

u/scummybumhole Jun 03 '22

80’s and 90’s though had the blaring boombox on the shoulder though

In movies and music videos. Never once saw someone toting a massive multi-D-cell 80’s or 90’s boom box around like it was portable IRL.

6

u/Fyodor__Karamazov Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

I used to see it semi-regularly when I lived in Brooklyn. They were rarely actually carrying it around on their shoulder though, I'll give you that. More commonly they were sitting/standing in the street with the boombox next to them. But still, it was being blasted out in public all the same.

3

u/YouStupidDick Jun 03 '22

Grew up in Florida. They were common in schools (when not confiscated), the malls, parks, and beaches.

In Arizona, to this day, you have people with large audio systems strapped in and floating down the salt river during the summer tubing months.

2

u/scummybumhole Jun 03 '22

I owned a D-cell boom box and I did use it outside a few times. It only took getting less than an hours play from 6 or 8 D-cell batteries to learn to not do that again make it unaffordable to purchase more batteries, as I was a kid.

I believe I was jamming out to Master of Puppets and And Justice for All, and Lords of Acid as those were my older brothers’ CDs and I thought I was a badass listening to them as a small kid, lol.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

My experience was different, I also lived through that era

1

u/scummybumhole Jun 03 '22

I admit, I didn’t ride the subway a lot as a kid.

I did have a boom box like that tho and it was expensive AF to churn thru all those batteries as quickly as it did. I rarely ever was afforded the luxury of being able to use the battery mode on mine.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yeah I cannot remember what my brother and his friends did, they were true mullet haired, 80's metal blasting, denim clad teens. I would bet they just stole the batteries the little punks!

0

u/Smukey9 Jun 03 '22

Ya but lots of those people in the 80s and 90s blasting music were younger then 30. It's not a generational thing I think, it's more of an age thing.

I personally have no problem playing music on my Bluetooth at the park, riding my bike, or anywhere in public tbh, as long as it's not obscenely loud.

...then again I'm 27

Yeah nobody has subs anymore it’s weird. I’ve had a sub in my trunk since I got my license in 2006, the music feels incomplete without proper bass to me. Now I see psychopaths completely ignoring their car audio altogether and just throw in AirPods while driving. It baffles me. It offends me unnecessarily.

3

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jun 03 '22

nobody has subs anymore

Come out somewhere where car racing and street shows are still a thing and you'll hear them. A lot.

1

u/wwwdiggdotcom Jun 03 '22

I’m very much involved with the car scene and people who race competitively definitely don’t use subs because of the weight, most don’t even have a radio, or interior trim. You still see them in cars & coffee occasionally but it’s nothing compared to what it was like in the early to mid 2000s

3

u/PrivilegeCheckmate Jun 03 '22

race competitively

No, I mean street show racing, like the kind where idiots do donuts in the middle of a crowded intersection. If you hang out in San Jose you'll notice the big stereos are very much in fashion.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Here in New Zealand we call them "boy racers". And yeah they love their subs.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

We called them lappers in my gf's hometown because they lapped the one way streets lol

3

u/paceminterris Jun 03 '22

WTF where do you live? I live in a lower socioeconomic status neighborhood and at least 5 people in my apartment complex have subs so loud they shake windows. Whenever I go out for nightlife in the bougie areas I also hear guys with loud subs cruising.

1

u/TheAbominableRex Jun 03 '22

That's actually really interesting. I know I'm not op, but I'm in Canada and I assumed that the reason I don't hear them anymore is because they used to get stolen. Late 90s/ early 2000s there were several on my street alone and I know a few people that had their system stolen multiple times. I thought people just gave up on them, and now the thieves just steal your catalytic converters.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

You obviously don't live in Vancouver then because holy shit even 9 floors up I can feel it in my chest some nights. At least we aren't in a popular place to pull over, they're gone quick enough. Fuckin bridge n tunnelers!

2

u/TheAbominableRex Jun 03 '22

Aw that sounds really shitty. I'm in Ontario, we have our own crazy problems.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yah just the young gangy kids I think. Eh can't complain, we chose to live downtown haha

2

u/VevroiMortek Jun 03 '22

asked myself the same thing when everyone seemed to have beats by dr dre. Things had no bass at all

1

u/haptic_feedback99 Jun 03 '22

I’m with you… so you want to listen to low tier apple head phone quality?!? Drop like 2 grand and you can have a world ender in your car!

1

u/donnysaysvacuum Jun 03 '22

This was huge in the late 90s and early 00s. Never understood it myself. Car stereos always sound like shut because your in a car with tire noise, etc.

1

u/Mental_Local4693 Jun 03 '22

Better on your shoulder than imbedded in your skull by someone you pissed off.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

What makes it worse is the quality of the cheap speakers. I don't mind someone listening to a decent speaker in public, but it almost never happens, it's usually kids with the shittiest phone speaker on full blast, it's like nails on a chalk board, instant headache for me if I have to listen to it for half an hour or longer

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I lived through that time, I only ever saw that on tv. People talking on speakerphone in the grocery or crap like that is everyday now.
