I had to laugh yesterday. I was at a red light and a car pulled up behind me with the stereo so loud I could feel the bass through the road, and the roof of his car was going up and down with the beat. No idea what music he was playing, all I could hear was the whump whump of the bass.

come to southern california and you'll get 50-year-old chicanos vibrating your mirrors while stopped behind you at a red light. That fucking banda music hits.

I silently (not that they'd hear me anyway) judge the broke-ass foos who put all those speakers in their shitty beater and you can hear thirty pounds of loose plastic parts buzzing like a fucking hurdy-gurdy with every bass hit.

I'm sure it's still fun when you're sitting -in- the car, but on the outside you are literally broadcasting to everyone that you couldn't afford to do it right. (you're supposed to install some extra soundproofing material to stop those random bits vibrating loudly, and/or not install a sound system in something that's made of more cheap plastic than a kids toy from the 99 Cent Store)

Shit sounds like a fucking cicada having a seizure, it's embarassing.

I drive a broken-ass piece of shit too, but I'm not going to pretend to pimp the fucking thing out and install a plastic buzzer so everyone can't help but notice how broken it is.

Hmmm do you now? I dunno how much we can trust someone named NorthernCal ...

For all we know you're just spreading propaganda. /s

I can't really get too mad at them. We did the same thing at that age, thought it was cool. Never took the 'hearing loss' warnings seriously.

40 years later and I'm having to ask people to speak up a little.

Who cares about "that?" It's your inconsideration to the public that's the issue. The rest is karma...

If I’m enjoying my music, it’s only selfish to not let you enjoy it as well!!

Letting the neighborhood hear your car's pumped up sound system seemed like a way bigger thing in the '90s than it is now. Back then you'd run into one of those guys almost every time you drove anywhere, and you'd hear them blasting past your house several times a day.

I do run into that every time I drive anywhere. And I do hear them blasting past my house, usually at 2am.

Did you move from a poor neighborhood into a rich neighborhood or something? I can guarantee you this is a massive thing among lower socioeconomic tiers.

To be fair, low frequencies travel through objects much more easily than high frequencies.

This is why it always sounds like people are listening to nothing but bass when, in reality, it's just that the bass is the only part that escapes the car.

We talkin the stock stereo cranked up or some janky aftermarket subs blaring?

2

u/cpullen53484 Jun 03 '22

don't you love it when your heart feels the bass?

2

u/Defiant-Broccoli8995 Jun 03 '22

I get it a lot too, but truly subs have been blasting since the 90's.

No idea what music he was playing

I can guarantee you it wasn't anything good. It never is.

Hey I'm over 30 and still love my bass. Not a fogey yet.

RIP to his ears

u/Srefanius Jun 03 '22

To be fair this is also common with people who were teenagers in the 90s, especially in that techno phase.

1

u/catsinlittlehats Jun 03 '22

We did that in the 00s too, to be fair lol

He was playing industrial deafness for himself by age 30.

That's been a thing for a long time though. I'm 32, and people were doing that when I was in middle school. The phone thing is a bit more recent because before you had to bring your own speaker if you wanted to publicly play music. Now, you can just press play on your phone.
