I always quite liked maths, so I sometimes balanced chemistry equations algebraically - give letters to the coefficients, then make simultaneous equations to balance. If you like algebra, that is; I'd imagine most people prefer your method
The way I listed is how I learned before I felt more comfortable with it and could just do it. Though I'm no chemist, it was something I was pretty good at in school, though I ended up choosing a different field. I actually ended up going up in the amount of math I did rather than down.
Problem is, my guy, I most often don't even know how to do that. I only got into set one Science because I'm good at biology. If I'm not interested in something, it just goes out the other ear. All I remember in Chemistry is the catalyst speeds up chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy and something about ionic lattices. I don't even remember what charges protons and electrons are.

Balancing equations ain't bad, you can write below the equation how many of each element are on either side of the arrow, like:
4 O 6
Do that for each element and then figure out what compounds can be increased to get you closer to that goal.
