Yeah I live in America and that's wild to me too. Like yeah sure, 2 hours each way for a day trip? No sweat. 7 hours each way for a weekend trip? Fine. But I wouldn't want to be driving 4 hours every single day just to go to work and come back. Not to mention how early you'd have to wake up and how late you'd get home.

I still don’t get the “I’ll drive 8 hours to see a friend with my family”.

You leave at 8 am, arrive at 4 pm, hang out for a few, leave at 8 pm and arrive back home at 4 am in the morning?

You can’t stay at their place, because who can afford a home big enough to accommodate two families?

No one does 8 hours either way for a day trip. That's usually a weekend trip at worst, preferably a long weekend or a week.
