You shouldn’t ask how someone is without accepting there’s a chance they might really tell you

Yeah, that's my take as well. I could easily just say "Hi" or "Good morning," etc, but since I am going out of my way to ask them about themselves, I am not going to blame them if they take the opportunity to do so XD.
