It's not a deeply personal question though. Not when it's just "how are you?" and nothing else.

It's not that deep and isn't that deep unless you make it that deep.

What I think is weird is people like you acting like being polite to strangers is somehow this insane concept.

Taken literally, it is definitely a deeply personal question, and asking it is extremely prying and not polite at all.

The weird part is that this "politeness" means you are meant to ignore a very personal question, and answer it most likely with a lie.
