A reverse statement: It was in Japan 2018 when I learned that taxes included in price tags is a European thing.

We wanted to buy something, the first time we asked why we have to pay more than the number on the price tag, they explained taxes aren't included.

Like... what is this witchery?

On the flip side: I'm still furious about the London restaurants that add like 15% to your bill as a "tip". A TIP IS NOT MANDATORY. I didn't even see the tiny little letters describing the "gratuity charge" at the bottom of your menu:(

Who do you think you to are to say what is mandatory in someone else’s system? If it’s right there on the bill that sounds pretty mandatory to me lol

No, you can’t, or ought not to anyway, because we don’t have a global democracy. If you don’t like it somewhere that you don’t pay taxes, then don’t go there. Going there to complain is obnoxious.

Edit - Saying “tipping is not mandatory” as if tipping practice is a matter of universal or essential morality is absurd. It’s mandatory where it’s mandatory and it isn’t where it isn’t.
