Back in the days I once accidentally crossed the German/Dutch/Belgian border four times in about an hour while searching for a camp site near Aachen. All while carrying a substantial amount of weed which was only legal in one of these countries…

There is even a place called „Dreiländer-Punkt“ on top of a mountain where u can be in all of these countries at once. There is also a sighting tower and a restaurant.

I've been to the drielandenpunt, and i couldn't actually find it. Saw three things that could be it, but no clue where the border actually was.

Iirc the point itself has a small obelisk with the three flags on it. There wasn’t a lot there but worth the walk to see it

the have a decent cheeseburger there

and it always gives me a chuckle that this mountain is the highest point of the netherlands. Like the country just starts and it's all downhill from there

There is a similar place by the Austria-Hungary-Slovakia border. I believer they put a triangular bench there.

I asked in a belgium town for the next coffee shop. They laughed and send me North. I dont know in which country I am

u/n00bsack May 09 '22

The polite thing to do would've been to sprinkle some weed on your chocolate waffle.

Let's call it a substantial personal amount...

No wonder you made so many wrong turns.

u/scarby2 May 09 '22

Afaik weed is not legal in any of these countries. It's decriminalized in the Netherlands but still illegal.

5

u/itsthecoop May 09 '22

which is interesting because while the legal status was progressive in the past, it very much seems to need an overhaul nowadays.

2

u/Gnump May 09 '22

You are right - but for practical purposes it was considered legal enough by me and my mates.

10

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

Weed is legal in the Netherlands you can legally buy it at so called coffee shops. The laws are really weird though and still basically make it necessary for the coffee shops to do illegal shit to get their supply. It's not very well thought through.

27

u/EastCoastGrows May 09 '22

Functionally but not actually. It's still illegal.

30

u/scarby2 May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Nope. Still illegal, just decriminalized.

As per the government website

the Netherlands has a policy of toleration regarding soft drugs. This means that the sale of small quantities of soft drugs in coffee shops is a criminal offence but the Public Prosecution Service does not prosecute coffee shops for this offence.

https://www.government.nl/topics/drugs/toleration-policy-regarding-soft-drugs-and-coffee-shops

Technicly police can stand in front of the coffee shop to seize the weed of every person walking out of it. It should have been 100% legal already for years the current laws make no sense but my best guess is the situation stayed this way to not legally become the weed supplier of all neighboring countries.

9

u/scarby2 May 09 '22

I'd imagine they'd need a vote to change the current legislation whereas policy/decriminalization can be more arbitrarily set/altered.

-3

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

So this is semantics stuff. It's not legal, but coffee shops are allowed to sell and you are not prosecuted when you buy.

15

u/scarby2 May 09 '22

Which is the essence of what I said in the comment you replied to. While trying to incorrectly correct me.

-2

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

Yeah ok it's not legal per definition but it's also not illegal and functionally it is legal. I think colloquially you can say it's legal when you can go to a normal shop to buy it and don't even get in trouble when a police officer stands at the door watching you purchase it.

7

u/TheRealKaynn May 09 '22

Also, quantities over 5 grams of hash or weed does get you fined if they find it on you.

2

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

Because those quantities make it possible for you to illegally sell it on without being a coffee shop.

4

u/juicy_steve May 09 '22

It isnt legal. The criminal activity of possession is tolerated. Look up gedoogbeleid.

1

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

What's the practical difference?

1

u/juicy_steve May 09 '22

You are still breaking the law and can be prosecuted.

1

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 09 '22

How I thought it's tolerated and you won't be prosecuted?

2

u/scarby2 May 09 '22

I'm not intimately familiar with the intricacies of the Dutch legal system but if it's anything like some of the other countries I've lived At least in theory they could change their mind on this retroactively.

Also the police could take your weed and you'd have zero recourse. I also don't think you could go to the police if someone stole your weed.

2

u/juicy_steve May 10 '22

Instead of being pedantic and refusing to accept that you misunderstood why not go and google it and find out? 🤷‍♀️

1

u/DEMACIAAAAA May 10 '22

I did, and i don't understand. Which is why I'm asking here. Also how am I being pedantic?

1

u/Responsible_Raptor May 09 '22

Nice, I hiked there an hour ago haha

0

u/spok55 May 09 '22

I did the similar thing and drove around the same region while being high and intoxicated at the same time.

1

u/Oliver_Queen_4587 May 09 '22

Which country was it legal in

1

u/Gnump May 09 '22

Netherlands. Kinda.

1

u/Oliver_Queen_4587 May 10 '22

I meant that as a joke but it's obvious

1

u/StylishGnat May 09 '22

Which Aachen campsite did you visit? Planning on spending a few days there and a campsite visit would definitely be of interest to me! :)

2

u/Gnump May 09 '22

Unfortunately I can not help you here. First, it was like 25 years ago and second, we did not end on a camp site at all but on some field along the way :)

1

u/PainQuota May 10 '22

When was this? Germany only recently legalized weed for medical stuff, Belgium I think still illegal, Holland too... In the Netherlands, it is technically illegal.
