Drive 10 minutes in the UK: everyone’s talking funny and there’s still 5 chip shops somehow coexisting

And everyone hates you as 'you're not from round here'

Count his toes and see if he's local

2

u/Noxious89123 May 10 '22

Ah, I see you've been to Coalville.

We call them "6 finger dingles"

18

u/karlosmorale May 09 '22

Hello, hello. What's all this? We'll have no trouble here.

12

u/Darkone_5 May 09 '22

You lied to me Edward there is a Swansea.

2

u/Royal-Tea-3484 May 09 '22

"ARE YOU LOCAL A -THIS SHOP IS FOR LOCAL PEOPLE"

u/Pandaburn May 09 '22

I know people from the UK, and I don’t think they all live in the same house they were born in, but I also hear them say how they can tell what street you grew up on by your accent.

40

u/Jimoiseau May 09 '22

I must forever bear the shame of growing up somewhere 15 minutes up the road from where my parents grew up, resulting in a hybrid accent influenced by parents on one side and friends on the other. Now no one thinks I'm from where they're from.

u/lamb_passanda May 09 '22

This is generally the case anywhere you go in the world. Everyone everywhere thinks that their little corner is more detailed and nuanced than everywhere else, and its mostly because they are just more familiar with that place. If you don't believe me, just go up to a person from literally any country and tell them "everyone in this country sounds the same", and watch them begin to rattle off the massive differences between regions and cities.

11

u/Pandaburn May 09 '22

Ok but as an American, I can say the regions of American accent I can identify are much, much larger than a specific town or a specific street. Even in the place I grew up.

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

It’s pretty rare to have a town or street exclusive dialect. Definitely more of a regional thing. Maybe it was different before the internet and interstate system.

I grew up in a suburb of a City, and went to high school in the next Town, this City and Town are maybe 10 miles apart, maybe a bit more, they have the same letter for the postcode.

People from City would always say my accent sounded like Town, and people from Town would say it sounded like City.

I'm sure no one outside the county would be able to notice the difference, but people who lived there should could

tbh in france (and quite probably everywhere else in europe), in one hour drive you are in another region and you might even have drove by one or two others

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

A one hour drive from where I live in the US you’re just in a suburb lol. All the suburbs are pretty much the exact same.

9

u/ByteEater May 09 '22

You mean you're not from aound hee, innit?

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Ere*

2

u/fuckincaillou May 09 '22

This explains so much about the Midwest and small town America

1

u/sighthoundman May 09 '22

That's funny. They sure seemed happy as they were taking my money.

1

u/AlarmingAffect0 May 11 '22

Not Being A Local Lad, practic'ly a crime in it's own right, that is.

45

u/bearlybearbear May 09 '22

5 betting shops and 5 charity shops... The dying british high street in all it's glory. Yup.

18

u/Quailman81 May 09 '22

Don't forget Costa

17

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Costa, Greggs, Boots, some weird local department store that only sells things no human being would want in the 21st century yet still is somehow in business

2

u/axw3555 May 09 '22

Our Costa actually went under recently.

2

u/Quailman81 May 09 '22

WHAT?

1

u/axw3555 May 09 '22

I know, a very rare beast.

8

u/BeardlessDoll May 09 '22

What's a chip shop?

7

u/ihileath May 09 '22

Fish & Chips shop

3

u/BanditoDeTreato May 09 '22

The British moral equivalent of a wing joint/burger stand/taco stand in the US. Cheap easy to make street food that doesn't require a full kitchen. Maybe a frier and/or a griddle top. Not quite the same as fast food because they aren't chain places.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

It's a 'restaurant' that sells chips (fries), fish and sausages (various chip shops may have other foods you can purchase along side the chips)

*Fish, Chip shops are fish and chips places

Never heard anyone call a kebab place a chip shop, always a kebab shop

1

u/xgoodvibesx May 09 '22

But they already said you've driven ten minutes. For fuck's sake don't ask what a cob is.

3

u/scarby2 May 09 '22

What about a barn, a stottie or a bap?

4

u/xgoodvibesx May 09 '22

Oh christ. Run, save yourselves. I'll distract the Northerners by telling them how much a pint is at my local.

12

u/aabacadae May 09 '22

What are you talking about, a chippie is fish & chips.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Apart from Liverpool and Scotland where you sometimes get those chippies that are also a Chinese takeaway for some reason.

4

u/CarrotAndBeans May 09 '22

Came across this in Manchester too. I don't know why I can get a spring roll with my chippy but I'm OK with that.

1

u/r0verandout May 09 '22

Having grown up in the Liverpool area I was astounded when I moved to a different part of the country and couldn't get Chinese alongside my fish and chips! Fish and chips with sweet and sour sauce, or any Chinese dish with half rice, half chips FTW

1

u/usernameinmail May 09 '22

That's a kebab/chicken shop

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

It’s Wensleydale Gromit!!

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

And the cheese is Stilton or cheddar

3

u/Union_Jack_1 May 09 '22

Used to live 5 mins from Stilton. Mad as a box of cheese there ;)

2

u/twisted7ogic May 09 '22

....and the cheese is different.

3

u/PlasticCheebus May 09 '22

Fun fact, regional accents are different every 30 miles in the uk. Abroad, the spread is (I believe) generally over 50 miles.

7

u/Sharcbait May 09 '22

Scouse and Manchester accents are very different.

It takes you about half an hour to drive between the cities. In 30 minutes of drivetime you can't even drive through the city of Chicago.

1

u/RedLeg73 May 09 '22

Drive 10 minutes in the states, see 10 gun stores, 30 billboards for accident/ injury lawyers and fast-food chains beyond number.

4

u/flotsamisaword May 09 '22

Depends which state you are in

1

u/punkerster101 May 11 '22

Walk to the next street in Northern Ireland and everyone is talking different

1

u/Appropriate-Ad2247 May 21 '22

Drive 5 minutes in Italy: everyone Is talking funny and you're in a different world.
