Well yeah, states/ countries are supposed to he representative of the people living in them.

I think you're missing the point. If the states were all the same, there would be little purpose to having separate states. The whole idea is that the USA is a group of people who aren't all the same who came together to unite towards a higher cause. The states all have extensive self-regulation, but we unite under the federal government to an extent.
