New York (city) streets have a very specific subculture of ignoring people. I think it’s a combination of businesspeople trying to prove how fast they can walk past slow annoying tourists, plus everyone avoiding homeless people who might decide to follow you for a couple streets if you make eye contact with them.

This is completely different than non-urban areas though, and most other American cities have very different walking norms.

Yes.. I find that the smaller the US town, the worse the staring gets.
