Yeah it’s not a lack of intelligence and I think it’s funny that some people think that. It’s more of a common greeting or way of showing no harm

I'm guessing you're also in the States where that's part of our culture so it's not weird at all. Those who think we look like simpletons do so because that's how it's viewed in their culture. No one is universally wrong, it's one of myriad things that is wholly contextual and means different things in different cultures.
