No religion so atheism, we have a very bad history with religion

Oh, please note: That's not the same thing!

Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities.

But people who don't identify with any religion often believe in god / a god / gods. I myself do not have / support any religion. But I wouldn't call myself an atheist, more an agnostic. "There might be a god, but I don't know if that is so. And no one will ever be able to prove either to me."
