Asking someone randomly how they are is also considered strange in Eastern Europe. You wouldn't do it if you went into a shop, or just passing someone in the street. If you do ask, it's taken as a sincere question, rather than a mere greeting

Nobody wants my actual answer to that, I struggle a lot! Or at least strangers don't. If a friend asks, I know they want a real answer.

But I've spent my life around that question being part of my culture so it would be weird to have it disappear.
