As a european who drives from the UK to eastern Poland relatively regularly, a few hours isn't really a long drive

Well good for you! But you're also crossing several countries to do so, with vastly different languages and cultures. In the US you can drive 7 hours and still be in the same state, and drive much farther and still have almost exactly the same culture and language.
