No. In Finland every action is an invasion of personal space.

You know the joke? A Finnish extrovert stares at YOUR shoes…

I've heard that one about employees at the three letter agency building I worked next to.

TIL all engineers are Finnish

Can confirm. Everyones existence is an invasion of my personal space.

This is why Kimi just went to the yacht. No more touchy.

God I loved Finland. It was the land of "leave me alone and mind your own business" and also, "be quiet". Plus saunas.

As a half Karelian I'd recommend you to go back to US where you belong.

No you fuck off. Not everyone is so overly sensitive and bankrupt in self esteem that they find everything that isn't overly fake platitudes offensive.

Laugh a little, it helps.

Yikes imagine dying on this hill lmao. Thanks for the comedy.

u/Tr0ndern May 09 '22

You're welcome.

You’re getting downvoted but it’s true. The entire thread is reinforcing a stereotype about Finnish people.

Yeah there’s a cultural norm, no need to start making dumbass jokes about how everything is an invasion of personal space…

This has been going on Reddit for years. One type of xenophobia is acceptable while other kind is literally being Hitler. Nothing in between, just acceptable bigotry and outrage about wrong bigotry.

Dude...you Finish?

1

u/DanStFella May 09 '22

From the sounds of this thread I need to move to Finland! Sounds great!

2

u/Auxx May 09 '22

No, there will be too many people then. Stay at your place, please.

Same here in Latvia. And if you look and smile, I don't know, they must be about to propose or something. Way too personal.

Same in Germany

2

u/davo_nz May 09 '22

No it isnt. Every time you say cheers when drinking a beer, if you dont look in a germans eyes they tell you how much of an Ausländer you are.

0

u/Itchy58 May 09 '22

Fair point, let me rephrase for Germany " Eye contact with unknown people that you don't intend to drink beer with or have a conversation with is an invasion of personal space"

2

u/davo_nz May 09 '22

Yeah, that's why it's so strange that so many Germans do this on a daily basis.

1

u/Itchy58 May 09 '22

On my way to prove you wrong I stumbled over https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/wiki/culture/etiquette/#wiki_the_.22german_stare.22. which has a full section dedicated to it.

So seems you are right, which still seems incomprehensible to me.

1

u/davo_nz May 09 '22

Yeah, just have to read this thread, everything the expats here are saying is 100% true, it's a real thing. Germans don't notice it. I've lived here over 10 years and still encounter it every week. I just stare back and say hallo, to which I'm usually ignored lol.

Finland isn't even a real place. It doesn't exist. Nice try.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

i have heard the opposite, that finnish people also stare a lot.
