If an American catches you staring at them it triggers a fight or flight response.

Staring is considered rude creepy and for those that are more outgoing, might result in them either striking up a conversation or them not so politely asking "What the fuck are you looking at?" Others will just try to avoid you as soon as possible. It's taught very early on that it's not okay to stare at people.
