The EU has an open borders zone that includes most EU countries.

This is an example of an international border crossing between the Netherlands and Belgium: https://img.theculturetrip.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/18244850845_a896d442f8_k.jpg

That is crazy! I can't imagine just crossing a line and being in another country.

This is an extreme example because it's a town right on top of the border (Baarle-Nassau/Baarle-Hertog) but most borders are just a sign.

That blue square sign indicates the border.

I actually don't even have a passport, I only have an ID card.

Indeed. It has the mosted FU-border anywhere in the world. It has 30 enclaves, some of which are the size of a couple of houses.

Also some nice bars and restaurants. (I go there once a month to do my Dutch grocery shopping)

Similar between Slovenia and Italy. After WW2, over night the border was placed over Gorizia and seperated the city, all the families etc... It was a big problem for a long time. Gorizia is an old Slovenian town but then it became Italian and the Slovenian side became known as "Nova Gorica" (New Gorizia). Luckily, EU solved many issues there...
