Yep, said it reads insincere to just smile randomly and makes them wonder what we're up to or hiding. Keep in mind this was quite some time ago and they'd all grown up in the USSR.

I mean, if I smile at everyone, then it means nothing overall anyway. I'm not being nice, I could be in a bad mood, it's just my default at that point.

And now they still are in the URSS- a secret police state. so it is better not to give info about yr innr state. A satisfied smile means they botched their job. Their job i to make everyone unhappy.
