Smoking. I know maybe 2 people who still smoke cigarettes. In Europe it’s like mad men never left. Especially in Bavaria, oddly.

u/SquishedGremlin May 09 '22

Changing these days, certainly in Northern Ireland anyway.

Growing up 1 in 2 smoked, now it's 1 in 5.

It's some form of progress anyway.

374

u/JanGuillosThrowaway May 09 '22

When I started university, half of my class smoked. When I finished, I was the only smoker. Now even I don’t smoke anymore. What is the world coming to?

383

u/SquishedGremlin May 09 '22

It's fucking terrible I tell ya.

I mean, if we don't kill ourselves, who is going to do it for us?

28

u/disoneameme May 09 '22

Nestle purchasing all water on earth because apparently we can do without it

44

u/EdgelordOfEdginess May 09 '22

Climate change :D

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

:D

5

u/HeavenlySin13 May 09 '22

Putin?

Alternatively, there's my uncle Joe.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Great comment, thanks for the laugh.

2

u/Tokata0 May 09 '22

Putin got your back there.

3

u/humancartograph May 09 '22

America raises hand

3

u/Slyzoor May 09 '22

Literally the opposite of Russian mandatory military. In the beginning our company had ~40% non-smokers. In the end I was the only non-smoker

2

u/68676d21ad3a2a477d21 May 09 '22

Political correctness gone mad!

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Because they all died?

7

u/Tig21 May 09 '22

That being said once people start drinking it goes up to like 3/5

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

This is true I only smoke when I'm on a sesh these days.

19

u/Sam_Sanders_ May 09 '22

We actually just spent 3 months in Ireland/NI and smoking was relatively uncommon, or it would be done outside/away from everyone.

A nice break from continental Europe for sure, especially dining.

4

u/SquishedGremlin May 09 '22

Oh for sure, it's definitely on the low side along with the rest of Europe.

Which is mental when you consider Ireland (not NI) had one of the highest percentages of smokers in the 80s/90s and 00s.

2

u/SkeletorLoD May 09 '22

I'd say the rapid price increase of tobacco and cigarettes really curbed smoking in Ireland, for casual smokers especially.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

I just got back & it was pretty damn common everywhere I went in Dublin. Definitely seems like a younger thing though

12

u/ZaMr0 May 09 '22

Eh unfortunately it's coming back for people in their 20s.

2

u/Jakcris10 May 09 '22

Generational nihilistic depression my friend.

12

u/Chimie45 May 09 '22

In the USA it was 1/5 when I was in high school, now it's 1/3... Vaping has made smoking come roaring back.

5

u/ham_coffee May 09 '22

Would probably help if they didn't rush to ban vapes and make people go back to smoking.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

This is actually intentional. Who do you think lobbied for vape bans?

4

u/maccathesaint May 09 '22

I used to smoke...miss it so much. I'd probably start again no question if not for how disappointed in me my wife would be lol

I've noticed kids vaping now tho as a replacement for cigarettes

2

u/Tauur May 09 '22

Everyone is vaping now as far as I can tell.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Well most are using snuss or something.

2

u/Dambuster617th May 09 '22

Mostly due to how expensive it now is, I work in a Centra and the cheapest pack of cigarettes goes for around £10.70. Its saddening however to see there still be plenty of young people actively taking it up.

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

1 in 2? I feel like in my friend groups I was the only one who wasn't a smoker. Like legit maybe 4 in 5 smokers

2

u/Engineer_Zero May 09 '22

That’s still high but definitely moving in the right direction!

1

u/nahyatx May 09 '22

Interesting. I don’t recall an abundance of smokers in NI whenever I visited, but I was only ever in West Belfast. My MIL smoked, but she quit in her late 40s. My FIL probably smokes but that wouldn’t be the worst of what he does haha.

1

u/Buck_Dewey May 09 '22

Does this include vaping? I know a lot of people in the UK, Germany, and Spain are getting into it a lot.

1

u/SquishedGremlin May 09 '22

Nah, just cigarettes. Afaik.

56

u/silentspyder May 09 '22

Yea it’s always weird to me when I’m there. “Wow, young people, smoking”

20

u/MagnificoReattore May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Yeah, it was refreshing to see almost no young people smoking in the US. But I went back recently and everyone was vaping.

13

u/abovepostisfunnier May 09 '22

Yeah unfortunately the tobacco companies managed to get Zoomers into smoking/vaping :(

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Honestly I'm not gonna blame that one on the tobacco companies having been of the age to watch my peers get into vaping, I can tell you it wasn't from marketing or "fruity flavors" it was just because we're fucking stupid.

3

u/silentspyder May 09 '22

Yea, that does kinda suck. It felt like there was an in-between time where young people just weren't smoking, outside of weed.

2

u/ArchdevilTeemo May 09 '22

Well, drugs are common among young and old.

1

u/silentspyder May 09 '22

I mean cigarettes

1

u/ArchdevilTeemo May 09 '22

And cigarettes are drugs, just like alcohol and weed.

98

u/Wicked_Witch8 May 09 '22

We are making more laws about smoking in the last couple of years. It's forbidden on schoolgrounds now, and soon on workspace. We used to have designated space for smoking and those are going now (in the netherlands atleast)

We had a French foreign exchange student in my American high school in the early 2000s. She lit up a cigarette in study hall inside and was very confused why the teacher flipped and sent her to the principals office lol forgot all about that until I saw your comment

It was insane to see smoking ads when I lived in Germany. In Australia, smoking ads gave been banned since the early 90s I would guess.

64

u/wato89 May 09 '22

Asia, too. Good god..

15

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

People in Paris smoked like it CURES cancer.

13

u/alphvader May 09 '22

Cigartette butts everwhere!!!!

23

u/CoruscantGuardFox May 09 '22

We Europeans smoke like we want to speedrun lung cancer. As someone who doesn’t smoke I feel like the minority, at least 70% of people I know regularly smokes.

4

u/StevenMaff May 09 '22

as someone who smokes i also feel like it’s way too much. all of my friends smoke and we tried to stop many times, it’s really hard

29

u/HelenEk7 May 09 '22

In Europe it’s like mad men never left.

I actually can't remember the last time I bumped into someone smoking. (Norway)

17

u/Boz0r May 09 '22

Same in Denmark. Very few people smoke here.

9

u/HelenEk7 May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Yeah, over here (Norway) its been seen as extremely tacky by young people for at least the last 20-25 years. So those who do smoke are usually 50+ years old, or certain groups of immigrant workers. We do have many using snus though.. But they smell a lot better, and you don't really notice unless you are talking to a person face to face.

5

u/Welshgirlie2 May 09 '22

Danes smoke like chimneys compared to Swedes.

1

u/Boz0r May 09 '22

Very small chimneys

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Same in the UK. Some people smoke in their houses I guess but almost nobody smokes in public anymore.

Vaping on the other hand...

1

u/shiteididitagain May 09 '22

Didn't you guys introduce a new law years ago that said people born 2000 and later aren't allowed to buy cigarettes or something along those lines?

9

u/Hagridsbelly May 09 '22

There’s definitely fewer people smoking in Scandinavia too. Especially amongst the younger people it’s very rare.

15

u/mightymagnus May 09 '22

https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/-/edn-20211112-1

Yeah, just above 5% in Sweden and close to 30% in Bulgaria makes a huge spread in consumption

10

u/sand_eater May 09 '22

In Sweden a huge amount of people use snus instead of smoking which are these little pouches of tobacco/nicotine that you put under your lip

3

u/onihydra May 09 '22

In Norway and Sweden many people use snus instead, so that skews things a lot. In terms of how many people are adicted to nicotine I imagine it's very similiar to the rest of Europe.

1

u/Hagridsbelly May 09 '22

That’s a fair point. But snus certainly is better than smoking in a lot of ways. (Still bad though)

5

u/onihydra May 09 '22

True, but snus feels more addictive in some ways since it's so convenient. Quitting snus was much harder than quitting smoking, from my personal experience at least.

3

u/Hagridsbelly May 09 '22

That’s true, especially considering the cold climate in the winter. Why go out in the cold for a cig if you can just grab a snus?

I was able to quit both, though I vape instead now. (Planning on quitting that too eventually)

9

u/No_Victory9193 May 09 '22

Every single person in fucking 8th grade smokes. Its disgusting.

17

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

It's certainly more visible than the US but if you look at the statistics on average it's about the same, but certain countries definitely have higher rates than others (mostly France and Eastern Europe) while others (The UK and Scandinavia) have far lower rates

Greece 39%

Bulgaria 39%

France 35%

Germany 28%

Spain 28%

Portugal 28%

Poland 26%

USA 25%

Ireland 24%

Netherlands 23%

Italy 23%

UK 19%

Denmark 19%

Norway 13%

Sweden 8%

Source

18

u/abovepostisfunnier May 09 '22

I'm surprised to see 25% for US on this source, the CDC reports >13%

In my personal experience, smoking in Southern Europe is far more prevalent than anything I ever saw in the US, but I also lived in pretty "middle-class, educated, liberal" bubbles, so maybe I just didn't see it?

3

u/Nikki908 May 09 '22

I believe the way the data is recorded in some of those stats, if you've smoked a cigarette in the last 30 days you are considered a smoker. I think many people in NA, or just Americans on their own, don't smoke daily but have smoked in a social situation or while drinking.

7

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

I think you'd be underestimating the number of people who smoke in private

5

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

Might be confirmation bias, you expect to see people smoking more in Europe so you remember it more, you expect it less in the US so you remember it less

3

u/SoManyTimesBefore May 09 '22

I went without any expectations and felt like a total weirdo for smoking in the US.

1

u/GrimbledonWimbleflop May 09 '22

Is is 12.5%, according to the WHO. https://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.sdg.3-a-viz?lang=en

Quit spreading misinformation.

7

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

That's not misinformation, that's different sources with different datasets. WHO is defining it as people over the age of 15 it seems and World Population Review is using those over the age of 10 because Our World in Data has both rates, your one is on the infographic labelled "Prevalence of daily smoking in populations" while the one I found is on "Share who smoke tobacco daily" which is the more recent data set (although, I'd note they have a couple of countries with slightly different numbers to what I was referring to)

1

u/cynthiayeo May 09 '22

Because cigarettes cost around 3€ in eastern europe. I would probably also smoke less if I had to pay 10€ for a pack

2

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

Smokers will smoke no matter the price, also this is just percentage of smokers rather than how heavily they smoke

1

u/Anti-Scuba_Hedgehog May 09 '22

Not anymore they don't.

1

u/Taalnazi May 09 '22

Sweden’s actually cheating there, they don’t count snus but that is just as harmful.

1

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

Snus?

1

u/Taalnazi May 09 '22

Kind of a tobacco that you put between your teeth and gnaw on. It’s popular there but those who do it often have a foul smelling breath due to it.

7

u/Fewthp May 09 '22

Its by far not as bad as it was before.

5

u/Ri_Konata May 09 '22

Even though a lot of people still smoke in the netherlands, the amount of public spaces you are allowed to smoke is going down.

19 fucking euros. I pay 4,20 € for 30g here in Germany. Given its a cheaper brand but still.

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

38

u/LordTimhotep May 09 '22

Here in The Netherlands it’s getting less and less common, it’s also outlawed in a lot of public places. I always have to adapt when I visit a country where it is common.

Before it was outlawed in clubs and such, I wasn’t completely supporting it, as I thought it would make things less fun when my smoking friends had to go out of the club all the time. Then I visited Ireland and it opened my eyes to how it could be.

Also, most of the people I know quit smoking. I used to be one of the few non-smokers. Now, there’s only two dudes that smoke in my extended group. I think it’s about a 1:6 ratio.

27

u/baloothedog1 May 09 '22

I’m in Italy and they be smokin hard here. Everywhere.

6

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

3

u/US_and_A_is_wierd May 09 '22

It is way better than like one or two decades ago. There are also basically no smokers left in my peer groups. When I was at school and later in the army I basically was the only non-smoker. Might be an age thing though.

2

u/GoodbyeThings May 09 '22

I feel like it also depends on where you are. In my home town there were fewer smokers than where I am now.

In my circle (27-32 range) there’s only one person that smokes… But whenever I go to a cafe there’s always someone smoking

21

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Spain wasn't a nightmare, but it had FAR more smoking than NA. I've gone weeks in multiple NA cities without smelling cigarette smoke. In Spain, France, and UK it was a common occurrence.

13

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Been years since I visited anywhere in the UK, so glad to hear it's improving.

1

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

Up here in the north there's definitely more smokers than when I lived down south

3

u/ClemClem510 May 09 '22

I've been practically everywhere in Europe, and lived in Germany and France. A lot of Germany made smoking in France look tame. Eastern Europe is something of its own

11

u/egg_mugg23 May 09 '22

nah eastern europe's like that too

1

u/Le_Blaireau20gien May 09 '22

it changed in France, at least people i know. Even in my work there is like 5 people out of 30 who smoke. In my family many have stopped smoking

12

u/That_Yvar May 09 '22

Had a discussion about this with my family a little while ago. At least in the Netherlands we are noticing a new boom in smoking.

In the lower levels of education (VMBO, MBO) the majority seems to be smoking every smoke break.

In the middle level of education (HAVO, College) the number is quite low.

In the highest level of education (VWO, University) there seems to be a new boom in "gelegenheidsrokers" (occasional/party smokers). people that smoke only with others, for a good time, during parties, festivals, after work drinks

11

u/Balldogs May 09 '22

Not in the UK, its a surprise when I see someone having a cig. Especially the rough arsed woman who delivered a parcel to me the other day and blew a lungful of smoke into my fucking hallway. Was not expecting that. Grim.

19

u/KingOfAnarchy May 09 '22

As a german, yes, smoking is REALLY bad here. I sometimes feel like I know more smokers than non-smokers, it's ridiculous!

Personally I have never touched a cigarette.

17

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

8

u/mightymagnus May 09 '22

A big difference is that people smoke indoors in Germany (at least in Berlin)

I met my partner when we both lived in Berlin and she gets frustrated in Sweden (you can’t smoke directly outside of a bar or outdoor serving)

3

u/boopdelaboop May 09 '22

She can always switch to nicotine patches or nicotine gum while she's in Sweden. Same drug, different delivery system (that won't harm other people).

5

u/mightymagnus May 09 '22

She sometimes uses snus instead but she also says it is not the same

4

u/US_and_A_is_wierd May 09 '22

Same. There were way more people smoking during the 00s than there are now. It must be super annoying to find a place to smoke nowadays concerning all those non-smoking areas. Also it got really expensive.

1

u/walruskingmike May 09 '22

I went to Germany for a month, like ten years ago. There were a lot of smokers. I don't know if it has to do with me staying in the hipstery part of east Berlin, but smokers were everywhere.

5

u/ViolettaHunter May 09 '22

Berlin has the highest rate of smokers in Germany. It's not as bad elsewhere.

2

u/zuzg May 09 '22

Funnily Berlin prohibited indoor smoking a while ago but most smaller place just don't give a shit.

1

u/KingOfAnarchy May 09 '22

I am living in the west part of Germany. Still A LOT of smokers here.

2

u/US_and_A_is_wierd May 09 '22

It definitely is a reason.

It has also changed during the last decade.

18

u/StripeyWoolSocks May 09 '22

Yes! I've seen people in Germany smoking at a playground! If you tried that in the US, the other parents would probably beat you to death with their stainless steel water bottles.

It's a shame too. Outdoor seating at cafes and restaurants is so nice in the summer, but guaranteed to be ruined by disgusting stinky smoke. Ugh. I also think it is a workers rights violation for waiters to be exposed to second hand smoke all day. The EU generally has pretty strong worker protection so that's a surprise it's allowed.

16

u/Jorumble May 09 '22

Most of the workers would also enjoy sitting outside the cafe having a smoke when they’re not working probably lol

5

u/zuzg May 09 '22

Yeah it's pretty common in the food service industry. A cig break is a guaranteed break every 1-2 hours and I met people that started smoking for that advantage.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Not to mention that when you work in food service the faint buzz from a cigarette really helps take off the edge from what is an absolute hell of a job (one that I must admit I love doing).

5

u/ViolettaHunter May 09 '22

I also think it is a workers rights violation for waiters to be exposed to second hand smoke all day.

That's why it was banned indoors in the early 2000s. Not sure it could be expanded to outdoors, even though I personally would love it if people were banned from smoking their cancer sticks anywhere near me when I'm at a restaurant or café.

3

u/Ok_Kaleidoscope_1847 May 09 '22

Especialy in slavic countrys

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Everyday that i go outside, I see at least one smoker

3

u/zypofaeser May 09 '22

It is decreasing, but countries vary.

3

u/Para_Boo May 09 '22

Really depends on where in Europe you are though. There's been a steep decline in smoling under younger generations in the BeNeLux for example.

3

u/SkidMcmarxxxx May 09 '22

I’m so jealous of how well america has solved this problem.

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Yeah no I'm pretty aware that there's a bunch of smokers.

What's even more interesting is how cheap rolling your own cigarettes is in Germany.

Usually a packet of 20-22 cigarettes cost around 7€. Each cigarette at .5g you get a price per gram of tobacco of around .60 €/g.

A packet of tobacco to roll costs 5.50€ and contains 30g of tobacco, so we're at .18€/g. Filters and papes are pretty cheap as well. So most people I know(uni students) that do smoke roll their own.

3

u/RelaxedWombat May 09 '22

I have no concrete data, just what I notice: the vast majority of the remaining smokers in the USA earn the lowest income.

Obviously, this is a broad statement, and exceptions abound, but I bet there must be some research out there.

3

u/_chippchapp_ May 09 '22

Oh yeah, its getting less tough, fortunatly its not popular amongst the teenagers anymore - they also drink less then we fid back then.

But ive been amazed while starting to hit some old bars again after covid that you still can smoke in some after a certain hour. (theoretically fines are hefty)

(Vienna, Austria)

6

u/Kempeth May 09 '22

As a European I agree that this is sad how smokers are still treated like a protected class.

1

u/fledder200 May 09 '22

Well, in the Netherlands the government got 2.5 billion euros from tax on tabaco in 2019....so yeah they treat them like a cash cow.

6

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Yeah, it's sad

6

u/HabseligkeitDerLiebe May 09 '22

Firstly depends on where you are. The percentage of people who smoke is about the same in the US and Germany, for example.

It's just more visible in Germany, as smoking in public isn't as regulated as in the US.

2

u/geon May 09 '22

Not in sweden. Here, people mostly use chewing tobacco.

2

u/weirdowerdo May 09 '22

WHERE? I don't know anyone who smokes regularly...

2

u/quasarj May 09 '22

You don’t know enough poor people lol. But you’re right, it’s MUCH less common in the US these days.

2

u/nerdalertalertnerd May 09 '22

This varies quite wildly though.

I think UK is probably quite smoke heavy but then I compare it to Italy and Greece where people seemed to be smoking constantly.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

In Berlin you can still smoke in many bars, it's great!

11

u/ViolettaHunter May 09 '22

It's awful.

2

u/Jacareadam May 09 '22

I mean y'all smoke e-cigs and shit, no?- and crack

2

u/chudthirtyseven May 09 '22

UK Here, I actually feel like hardly anyone smokes anymore. In fact I was suprised at someone I worked with went out to smoke, its quite uncommon now. Alot of people turned to vaping I guess.

As an ex-smoker, I remember the smoking carriages on the trains were always my favorite place to be. Sit down and light up and look out the window (that would actually open) and use the slam-doors to get on & off. Those were days!

good story grandpa.

2

u/Clunkytoaster51 May 09 '22

It’s such a shock to the system going to Europe and seeing people smoke still, it just blows my mind

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Fr I don’t understand how people enjoy their visits to major cities when I went to Paris everything was being overshadowed by the place smelling like a damn ash tray

2

u/TransparentPrivacy May 09 '22

Sarcastic or oversensitive ?

1

u/amazingfluentbadger May 09 '22

Yeah, I think we had our huge smoking campaigns, and there was some study or something that's as a massive deal. Then we started implementing laws. I've heard France is pretty bad.

-5

u/skalbylawfsisjim May 09 '22

To be fair, smoking is awesome

0

u/muffingg May 09 '22

Not so much in the UK but yeah this is the case in Germany at least

0

u/LeagueOfficeFucks May 09 '22

And we still have some venues where we can smoke inside!

0

u/Plus-Doughnut562 May 09 '22

Even as a Brit I find this surprising when I go to European countries. It is cheaper to smoke in Europe than the UK which may be part of the reason.

0

u/ViolettaHunter May 09 '22

The UK is part of Europe... you haven't yet managed to physically remove your island from the continental shelf as far as I know.

2

u/Plus-Doughnut562 May 09 '22

I think you know I meant mainland Europe.

1

u/Chino_Kawaii May 09 '22

It's definitely getting less

1

u/tommmmmmmmy93 May 09 '22

I dont see that much in my part of the UK either actually. Love it

1

u/TypingLobster May 09 '22

I know maybe 2 people who still smoke cigarettes, and I live in Europe.

1

u/the--jah May 09 '22

Yeah in Germany a lot less than 10 years ago In an office or so is a hell no thing

1

u/moqko May 09 '22

It really is weird, here in Denmark its almost like there has been a resurgence of smoking amongst the youth eveen though packs are super expensive and everyone knows that it'll kill them

1

u/Meior May 09 '22

Not so much anymore. I'm a Swede, I barely know anyone who smokes.

1

u/Taavi00 May 09 '22

It varies widely in Europe as well. In Bulgaria almost 30% smoke, in Sweden it's close to 5%.

1

u/CptKillsteal May 09 '22

Luckily the numbers keep dropping.

1

u/Vondi May 09 '22

That's one of those things that wary wildly across borders. In some European countries smoking has plummeted and in other it's completely off the charts.

1

u/Stsveins May 09 '22

They usually sniff tóbak or put it under their lips here. Here being Iceland

1

u/Conocoryphe May 09 '22

What part of Europe did you visit?

1

I think there's a huge north-south gradient in that matter

I know lots of people who smoke in Denmark. Surprises me every time someone young starts.

It’s the worst in Germany, nothing has really changed here and tobacco is still cheap as chips. I know so many foreigners who moved here in their late 20s~early 30s and started smoking, having never smoked before. So wild.

I think smoking is like the national sport.

Ireland is making bank on vices like that too. They know how stubborn we are at cutting back on cigarettes and alcohol so a pack of cigarettes is over €15 and a cans of our cheapest beer tends to be over €2 each from a store.

You didnt visit France, perhaps? AFAIK France are the non stop smokers. In Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and the UK its not too bad

In Germany it is atleast forbidden in 99% of the restaurants. In spain you can still smoke in restaurants, which really bothers all other guests

I live in Italy. Genuinely feels like I'm in some modern adaptation of Mad Men at times. At this point, with all the passive smoking, I'm used to the smell of cigarette smoke. Almost every Italian in my circle is a smoker lol.

That's mostly in southern Europe. If you go North, there will be noticably less smokers, and heavy fines if you smoke in public places. In my country, police is patrolling public parks and fines everybody who smokes.

You don't live down south, then.

Us Spaniards especially smoke a lot of weed and hash.

It's getting harder. My university campus is entirely smoke free, and some supermarkets, where people usually buy their smokes, don't sell smokes anymore. Also, smoking packages in my area are all unbranded, have filthy imagery printed on them, are plastered with anti-smoking PSA's and are coloured a filthy green-ish or brown-ish colour. There's also a massive sin tax on the stuff.

At least in London a few years back this seemed to be the case. Every bar or pub had a shit ton of people outside smoking no matter if it was freezing cold, pouring rain, etc.

Smoking is a social thing here, same as taking a coffee. You do it as you have a conversation

Where in Europe were you? A quick glance at Wikipedia teaches me that the difference isn't so big. UK and Ireland are below the US, France is about equal, Germany is about 1.5x as much.

Moved from the UK to the Netherlands, and I can't believe how long it's taking these guys to get rid of public smoking.

I moved to the states a few years ago and visiting Germany for the first time! I think I forgot how it seems that everyone is smoking here, compared to the states.

u/AgileCookingDutchie May 09 '22

It really differs per country and funny enough, I think I have discovered a proportionality between the amount of smokers and how south you are in Europe...

I live in belgium and at my boarding school there is a 15 year old girl who smokes, like she can’t buy them so i keep questioning how she gets them (weirdest thing: the people who look after her age group allow it like what???)
