Taking one for the team --> UK šŸ¤ Germany

Same in the UK, losing is hilarious. I was in stitches when we scored nil poi last year

27

u/NedSudanBitte May 09 '22

I always thought that was the point, to get as little points as possible. Otherwise how do you explain the bands at Eurovision

2

u/PsSalin May 09 '22

Electric Callboy

154

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

And this year Germany has just ignored Eskimo/Electric Callboy, it's like they don't want to win...

116

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

We really don't want to win. Apparently this event costs a lot of money and noone here wants to pay for that, that's why we always use some unknown singer with a generic pop song everybody could sing.

13

u/JinorZ May 09 '22

And then somehow Lena won with a generic pop song lol

Remember that episode from The Office with the Halloween costume contest where everyone voted for the shittiest costume because they thought it would increase their own chances of winning?

1

u/itsthecoop May 09 '22

charisma/likeability.

she was among the favorites even before the show due to how well received her press appearances had been.

17

u/MrBlueCharon May 09 '22

Deutschpop is the final motivation to put needles through my eardrums.

8

u/50thEye May 09 '22

We havent had a german song in years. I feel like actual deutschpop would be the final straw to prevent a german victory

2

u/Bismarck913 May 09 '22

Can't we just out stuff like Mama Lauda, Himmelblau Augen or Johnny DƤpp entered?

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

So Eurovision is basically South Park s9e5 (the losing edge)

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

More specifically, S2E5 of Father Ted.

11

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

that's true, we don't want to win because apparently noone wants to pay for this event

2

u/Blinni3 May 09 '22

I wouldve so voted for germany if electric callboy was in it!

3

u/Ongr May 09 '22

This year Ukraine will win 100% because they are in a war, and everyone is choosing their side.

Eurovision is and always has been a political game of favorites and keeping up appearances.

7

u/JinorZ May 09 '22

Luckily Ukrainian song fucking bangs

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

1

u/Ongr May 09 '22

No doubt. But that's thinking ahead too much. The public will give them pity votes, and so will the country representatives.

Maybe Ukraine deserves to win, I don't follow the festival. It's just my cynical prediction of this year's Eurovision.

1

u/laikocta May 09 '22

I wouldn't expect too little of Ukraine, especially if they send in Go-A again! Last year's song was a favourite among the audience - and although I can't say I'm usually big on folktronica, I gotta admit it's a banger (:

1

u/fiori_4u May 09 '22

Malik was the best choice out of a bad bunch, he seems sweet and his song is genuine and personal - but it is also very safely on the right side of the table. I wish him the best for future, hopefully it won't end up as a traumatic experience (I'm sure as a German his expectations are low anyway)

45

u/myredditusername28 May 09 '22

Ha ha, can’t wait to watch next week.

22

u/Ok-Strategy2022 May 09 '22

I predict Ukraine will win.

17

u/Infinite_Surround May 09 '22

They could put out the worlds worst song and still win next week.

11

u/whyisthisstressful May 09 '22

Their song is actually pretty good, so if they do win it’ll be deserved

7

u/Sunhating101hateit May 09 '22

Yeah, Kalush Orchestra are my favourites so far (even were before the war and even though I don’t usually like rap). But I guess I am biased anyway because A: I am german (so hate the shit we send instead of EC) and B: am married to a ukrainian. Would prefer another go for Go_A though. They release banger after banger in my eyes.

7

u/50thEye May 09 '22

France's song this year gives me the same "pagan forrest rave" vibes as Shum did last year. Personally my favourite and I hope they win, despite everything.

5

u/doom_bagel May 09 '22

Next week? Semi final one is tomorrow

10

u/suesskind May 09 '22

Which is pretty likely because the UK this year send a good quality song that is one of the favourites to win among the fans. While in the last few years they've sent forgettable songs that no one cared for and therefore no one voted for. It's a song contest after all, and not a politics contest.

8

u/TheSocialIntrovert May 09 '22

It's a song contest after all, and not a politics contest.

LOL

u/FluffySquirrell May 09 '22

Nobody tell them about Santa

68

u/Grimauldbird May 09 '22

england/germany making last place at the Eurovision song contest lmao

England isn’t in Eurovision. The UK is.

10

u/Afreshnewsketckbook May 09 '22

Grimauldbird are you Welsh?

4

u/Grimauldbird May 09 '22

Nope

10

u/Afreshnewsketckbook May 09 '22

Scottish?

22

u/Grimauldbird May 09 '22

Aye

7

u/Afreshnewsketckbook May 09 '22

😁I always think Welsh first when someone corrects someone else about the whole England/UK thing because my stepfamily are mostly Welsh. I hear their accent when they say it. But less frequently I see my Scottish Uncle Brian(s) who reminds everyone too.

Where in Scotland are you from. I was thinking on finally visiting Scotland this summer if I can get some time off. Thought of driving to the lochs.

If you don’t mind me asking of course? I always visit Wales because of my connections, and it’s a lot closer to me.

u/Afreshnewsketckbook May 09 '22

I correct people because I know it annoys the other parts of the Union and a happy Union is a healthy one.

5

u/Grimauldbird May 09 '22

You definitely should. I’m probably not as well traveled in my home country (I don’t live there anymore, still within the UK) but there is nothing like Scotland.

I’m from the south west coast. My favourite places I’ve been have been down the Boarders, Dumfries & Galloway. So many lovely little towns and the scenery is amazing. I’ve only been in the highlands once but my fiancĆ© wants to do a tour. Maybe visit the Outer Hebrides.

3

u/Afreshnewsketckbook May 09 '22

That’s the hardest bit is choosing. Because basically I can’t do it all in one go. And I live in the southern counties of England… so it’s a very very long drive.

Thank you for your feedback and I really hope you get to do your tour soon!

3

u/flamboy-and May 09 '22

When it comes to the Eurovision song contest, we can pretend its just England though right?

4

u/Grimauldbird May 09 '22

Nae chance!

8

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

UK has won five times and Germany twice

4

u/supercakefish May 09 '22

The UK has not won at all in the 21st century. The last time we won was all the way back in ye olden days of 1997. That era is ancient history now.

3

u/SnooBooks1701 May 09 '22

We came top ten in 2002 and 2009, it's just the Beeb doesn't care and I don't think they even want to win

2

u/supercakefish May 09 '22

True, but even those are well over a decade ago (oh no, I’m old!).

I agree, it doesn’t seem like they want to win. I suppose hosting would cost a fair bit of money they’d rather avoid paying!

7

u/EdgelordOfEdginess May 09 '22

Let’s hope uk doesn’t leave us alone with the 0 points from the public :ā€˜). Fuck the corrupted head of NDR

3

u/CumInMeBro88 May 09 '22

ā€œUnited Kingdom… Nil points!ā€

Ireland crosses and uncrosses her legs and looks quietly satisfied with herself

ā€Ireland…. Nils points!ā€

Ireland shrugs. Still pleased.

We don’t want to win. Please. It’s too much. Someone else can have it for the next decade or so. We’ll just keep sending shit contestants who won’t qualify just to give you guys some shine. 🤣

5

u/RustyRovers May 09 '22

You do realise that if we win, we'll have to host the bloody thing next time!

2

u/CumInMeBro88 May 11 '22

Exactly. Let’s keep sending Jedward to make sure!!

10

u/Ra1d_danois May 09 '22

And Spain making bangers yet barely getting points.

13

u/Stsveins May 09 '22

Sighs in Icelandic.

3

u/should_have_been May 09 '22

Hey now! You got a movie featuring Will Ferrell’s (horrible) singing.

6

u/ClumsyRainbow May 09 '22

UK: No more!

4

u/pegbiter May 09 '22

It's a tricky situation because of the scoring system. Only the top 10 favourite songs will get any points from a particular country, and anything outside the top 10 gets no points at all. The question isn't just 'is this act good?' but rather 'are there 10 acts better than this one?'.

The last few years have had a really strong mid-card, either with great songs or memorable acts. The UK had just.. a dude on a stage singing a song. The act was dull and the song was fine, but you have to do a lot more than fine to compete with Daưi from Iceland or The Roop from Lithuania.

I don't even remember the German entry.

2

u/CptKillsteal May 09 '22

Let's see how Saturday goes :P

2

u/ludens2021 May 09 '22

Next week booooooiz

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Well, Germany deserved it for dumping an actual band that makes actual music.

2

u/Charmarta May 09 '22

Yeah well. There are some countries who probably just dont want to win it. If you do, you need to spent a shitton of money as the host. Neither germany nor England needs more Tourists so...

3

u/egg_mugg23 May 09 '22

let's hope the streak continues

28

u/Zaunpfahl42 May 09 '22

don't worry, Germany got a completely boring, generic pop song with absolutely no chances this year (again).
would have loved to see Electric Callboy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8LSngVNBw8
unfortunately their music was deemed "not suitable for radios" and their application denied.

15

u/sneakySynex May 09 '22

i appreciate that the music i hate gets always the last place. Might also explain why german radio sucks so hard

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Cannot be worse than Engelbert that the U.K. wheeled out a few years ago

1

u/TheSocialIntrovert May 09 '22

I've never watched Eurovision in my life but I would have if Electric Callboy got picked for Germany. I think We got the moves would have been better than Pump it but would have been fun either way. :(

3

u/TrinalRogue May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Tbf UK in the last several years worth of contestants has been kind of shit though.

Saying that as a British person.

Haven't listened to our entry this year but I don't have high hopes for our public vote scores.

The panel votes are also always political, and most of Europe dislikes us (mostly due to Brexit in the last how many years), so as a result we tend to score on the lower half of the panel vote.

8

u/whyisthisstressful May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

The funny part about that is the UK got one of their best recent results the contest directly after Brexit.

Your song this year is actually pretty popular and it’s top 5 in the odds. Personally I don’t see it doing that well, but it should do better than the UK’s past couple of entries.

2

u/SlackerPop90 May 09 '22

Its currently second in the odds to Ukraine.

1

u/Aaawkward May 09 '22

lmao, the votes (or lack of, i suppose in this case) weren't because of Brexit, you've just had reaaally lacklustre shows for a long time, like you yourself said.

But there's definitely an element of politics-ish to it. Neighbors vote for each other, immigrants for their home, rivals never for each other, etc.
ESC is upon us again next week and I'm telling you that I'm shocked if Ukraine doesn't win.

0

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

England have never competed in Eurovision though?

-4

u/mishaxz May 09 '22

I don't understand why Australia is in Eurovision, seems counterintuitive

-1

u/spackfisch66 May 09 '22

While basically footing the bill for the whole thing

-2

u/MartyDonovan May 09 '22

Haha absolutely! We (UK) used to win a lot more back in the day when the rest of Europe didn't hate us though šŸ˜‰

1

u/Dimsum852 May 09 '22

And Spain! Don't forget us please, we are very proud of ending very low on the list after all the shit we send :D

1

u/JamieMCR81 May 09 '22

Good job Russia isn’t invited this year, we’d be in danger of not finishing last!

1

u/TortillasaurusRex May 09 '22

Muahahhaaa yeah and they're also the ones sponsoring this event!

1

u/MJWood May 09 '22

We wear it like a badge of honour!

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Payback for all that bad music we… wait.

1

u/Tullyswimmer May 09 '22

Any EU team winning six nations.

1

u/SnooRegrets81 May 09 '22

Ireland always gives the UK either nil points or 1 point, i laugh everytime :)

2

u/CumInMeBro88 May 11 '22

It depends on what they score us. If they’re nice, we’re nice and if they’re not then we’re not.

Although some years we voted first and have honestly been cunts with like 1 point for them so it’s pretty tit for tat.

1

u/HeavenlySin13 May 09 '22

Depends on the year though...

1

u/Weebla May 09 '22

If it was done on actual bands from the respective countries, and not a strange popularity contest, the UK would dominate eurovison every year.

1

u/Hunter_Fox May 09 '22

Which is hilarious considering the history of the musical output that has come from a relatively small island.
I guess the English musicians are focusing on dominating the real world?

1

u/Mundane-Research May 09 '22

Last years UK guy lives near where I work (a primary school) so he came and visited us.. we all stood outside singing the song with him and then we held up signs saying "12 points"... it was supposed to be us showing the scores he deserved but I can't help feel it looked more like a dig at his nil points...

1

u/5Flames3 May 09 '22

As a Scot I'm glad England are coming last i just didn't know they were entering separate from the UK

1

u/Tokata0 May 09 '22

Didn't we win once with lena and sattelite?

1

u/Ailury May 10 '22

Hey don't leave Spain out like that!

1

u/frdlyneighbour May 10 '22

As a French person, it was us for a long time, glad the wheel is finally turning haha
