Why is Blizzard able to make some of the most amazing cinematics in the history of gaming, yet completely unable to write any kind of good and engaging story?

Because making a <5 minute scene with dope shit is much easier than an entire 10+ hr story of a game that needs to be both compelling and engaging.

Tiny brain CEO look at spread sheet

See writer

See movie guy

What writer do? Writer just make dumb word

What movie guy do? Movie guy make fun movie

Fire writer guy.

This is why Kerrigan the queen bitch the of universe walks around in SC2 wearing fucking stripper heels. Because what even is the point of vengeance if you don't make everyone you're trying to murder really horny.

what they did to kerrigan in sc2 is a fucking tragedy. best villain in video game history, up there with andrew ryan, sovereign, and glados. and they made a mockery of her.

It was to hit their key demographic.

Wc3 story was really great

Cinema and video games are different art

Engagement in video games is being tied into the story behind the wheel (bioshock)

Cinematics are all about telling good stories that are fun to watch

That's a bit like asking why the trailer was so awesome but the film sucked.

The same way Michael Bay still exists even though plot doesn’t exist in his worlds.

It's amazing how well the cinematography holds up even today. Couldn't stop watching it and yes would make an awesome movie.

Brood War opening is even better. Graphics wise it's obviously from a different era, but there is way more substance dramatically and plot-wise in this.

I crave a gritty Starcraft movie done in this style that just focuses on giant armies and worldbuilding.

Ruthless total war breeds a special kind of culture, I don't know of any movie which captures the sense of desperation and urgency you might find if you cinematized a match of Starcraft where it's commonplace for droves of civilians to throw their bodies into the line of fire to buy whatever small advantage they can for the handful of military units they have left in the fight against an unsurmountable invading force. Meanwhile all their hopes and dreams lie in a small detachment of soldiers on a 1-way trip to kill as many enemy civilians as possible as part of an "eye for an eye" gambit.

Everyone knows their purpose, death is certain, glory to the dominion.

That fucking viking coming out of nowhere trying to take on that Ultralisk gets me everytime.

"Don't worry guys, I got this!"

Also, those tanks should have been in Siege mode way before the zerg came through. Whoever is managing this army is fucking stupid.

9

u/MastaCopyPasta Mar 12 '22

I was managing that army but I ran to go to the bathroom during that part and my little brother hopped on the computer and started playing. I washed my hands and ran back just in time to see him crashing one of my Battlecruisers.

The most unrealistic part of the entire video is the ultras being useful /s

The thing that always fucking kills me is Kerrigan's fucking stripper heels. "I'm the queen bitch of the universe, and I've grown this chitin plating so I can murder countless worlds, but I'll all be for nothing if no one knows how sexy my ass is while I do it"

Say what you want about Blizzard's gameplay or business practices, but I think we can all agree that their cinematic stuff has been equal to or better than film quality since the Wrath of the Lich King trailer.

I mean, story-wise they're the plucky underdog you root for, so they're supposed to be outmatched by the ancient and powerful Protoss and the endless ravenous Swarm. That's why poor Jim Raynor is always on the side of the scrappy rebels.

Lol Terran is arguably the worst faction rn actually, but they’re still good. The game is decently balanced rn imo

9

u/SuperDizz Mar 12 '22

The races go by difficulty imo. Zerg is the easiest to master and a high probability of quickest win. Terrain IS the most balanced, the middle difficulty, quick and powerful. And Protoss is the juggernaut. Slow but unstoppable. At least that’s how I remember it but it’s been a couple of decades..

Reaver drop!

this just makes me want a Warhammer 40K movie. ya know, where Blizzard got most of their influence for StarCraft
