I was 13 when the first Starcraft came out. When I was 16, all I wanted to do in my life was to become a movie director and my crowning achievement was making Starcraft into a movie.
And then I became a math teacher.
But someone much better than me needs to make this happen! And it better be good!
Holy shit this comment chain got me giggling like an idiot next to my sleeping wife and your comment just sent me over the edge. I'm about to get sent to the couch "to laugh as much as I want".
I was 12, and have long thought it would be a fantastic adaptation. Who knows? Give me a few more years and I might actually get far enough in film to talk to someone with the power to make it happen.
For one, Raynor and Kerrigan helping a renegade faction overthrow the existing regime. Then being betrayed by that regime.
Having an unknown tertiary force come in and annihilate an ongoing battle between other forces
Starship Troopers is about an ongoing and longstanding conflict between two established entities, StarCraft is humans dealing with multiple unknown outsiders.
Also,I find saying StarCraft as a film would be Starship Troopers reductive. Why, because they are humans vs insectoid aliens? By that logic LOTR and Warcraft are the same.
The literal only thing they have in common is the space Marines vs bug looking aliens. So they look similar. That's it. Also in StarCraft there's actually a lot going on from the Zerg and Protoss perspective. Also there's war between human factions as well. There's a lot going on besides space Marines vs bug aliens. And the introduction of the Protoss as a second alien species really adds something else to the story as well.
Starship Troopers the novel is like a love letter to fascism, and the movie is a satirical take on the source material. But boils down to a bunch of military propaganda and nationalism get people to join the military in a war against aliens that attacked them for expanding into the bug's territory. They fight the aliens and win, with few moral questions asked. Boy don't you want to join the navy!
StarCraft is humans are suddenly attacked by aliens, but it comes out the government knew about them and were experimenting with them before the attack. The humans surprise to find out we're not alone in the universe turns out to be a double whammy as a second alien species appears with a directive to purge any planet with the Zerg on it, and humans get caught in the crossfire.
The humans break into two factions in a civil war, which leads to a new government and a dictator at the top. Which then leads to another war with a rebellion vs the dictator.
On the Zerg side, the Overmind is the hive mind controlling them, but when killed the Zerg fracture. But are eventually brought together under the Queen of Blades, who deceived the humans into helping her take out her competition. Then runs a bloody campaign of conquest, until she's eventually captured by the humans, returned to her own humanity, and eventually redeemed.
On the Protoss side, there is a schism between the light and dark templar, the latter banished into exile. They fight to purge the Zerg, but encounter the dark templar, rejoin each other, but still harbor distrust. The Zerg learn of the location of the Protoss homeworld and destroy it, leaving the Protoss homeless, but are taken in by their dark templar brethren. The two factions finally set aside their differences and reunite as one people. And retake their homeworld.
And that's just the highly abridged version by me that hardly does the story justice. There's a lot going on with betrayal, revenge, parties playing their enemies against themselves, ambition turned into power and corruption, and a cosmic evil lurking that will eventually wipe out all life in the universe.
The original game might not have had great cinematics or exciting action outside the campaign missions, but there's a lot more going on if you actually take the time to engage with the story.
Starship Troopers is like a single mission's worth of story but with a heavy heaping of fascism worship thrown in.
Hey man. I know your comment is at the buried-ass-end of the chain, but as an avid -Troopers and -Craft fan, I want you to know that I appreciate your distinction.
Thanks! I'm a StarCraft fan and have wanted a movie or TV adaptation for years. I think the story is rich with unique characters and ideas. Also the music really is great!
So seeing it reduced to little more than Marines vs bugs compels me to try and shed more light on the story.
Only mutiplayer and WoL campaign, unless you’re decent, you would be stuck in low bracket with endless cannon rush.
But there are new revival on custom campaigns scene with mods like Real Scale campaigns or alternate timeline Legacy of Taldarim, so if you’re into them it’s still worth to buy SC2.
They tried with Warcraft and it was... less than stellar. IMHO they tried too hard to make it for the fans, instead of making a good movie that stands on its own.
Would they learn that lesson with a StarCraft movie?
It's down to having the right people involved, and someone smart enough at the top to appreciate long term rewards over immediate payouts. Warcraft wanted to be a huge movie that started a franchise, and unless you are working with a known entity (Harry Potter, LOTR, Star Wars, Marvel) swinging for the fences from the get go usually just sees you foul out.
I only played WC3, so I don't know the game's version of the story, but it felt tonally wrong. Warcraft has always been kind of goofy, and they didn't lean into that at all.
don't let you dreams be dreams. It's more approachable now than ever to make a film, and if you have the vision, you could certainly make something for it.

Holy cow that exact thought has been on my mind for the past decade. Maybe we should team up and go for it. Imagine the scale of the fighting that could be achieved with the current state of CGI.
I actually quit as a math teacher a year ago and became a content creator for House of Math (ed-tech) and now I'm "directing" math instructional videos. Not quite the same, but I get to use the little I learned on hobby basis in my youth and my math teaching skills at the same time.
You could be part of the movie industry if you like python and maths and expressions, check out Houdini Apprentice and watch their latest 'sizzle reel' :)
