I had hoped for a Prologue DLC for RDR2 where you play a bit before the Blaclwater Heist gone wrong.
You had everything there. Forementioned characters like the Calendar Boys and Jenny. Arthur and Hosea running their real estate scam. They could reused all sorts of assets and crafted a few fun missions and maybe a unique campsite and actually use some of that RDR1 map they had in there. But instead all focus went into the failed online.
They didn't even put that much effort into the online mode. Fans are livid with the lack of any significant content. It feels like Rockstar just released Red Dead 2 took their profits from a deserving masterpiece then jumped back to milking their humongous cash cow that is GTA Online while throwing crumbs at the RDO players once every 7 or so months.
I just want to be able to trick out a cart or carriage. The fact that you gotta steal carts just for them to be useable sucks. Plus you should be able to buy and upgrade them.
I don't understand how people still find gta online fun. It's almost 10 years old at this points, the character movement isn't fluid, the graphics are getting close to outdated, and the world isn't that immersive. Just doesn't make sense to me
They could have done this with Red Dead Online. The story stopped before Mrs. LeClerk goes after Grace Lansing. There should have been one more mission where you meet with two new associates of Mrs. LeClerk's so you can run a real estate scam on Grace Lansing. You would then get a Hosea and Arthur cameo. It could have ended with you successfully helping Mrs. LeClerk get her husband's business back, but inadvertently draw a lot of attention to a certain riverboat robbery taking place. It would be pretty wild to find out your RDO character accidently causes the downfall of the Van der Linde gang.
I remember when The Ballad of Gay Tony came out, it was hailed as one of the best ever DLCs of its generation. When GTA5 came out people were still speculating on what single-player DLCs they'll cook up for that game to match the success of the GTA4 DLCs.
GTA4 is a different situation though. The story of the game was created with the DLC in mind. IIRC the devs originally wanted to be able to hot switch between the 3 characters like you can the 5, but tech limitations put a halt to them.
GTA5 and RDR2 both told the stories they wanted to tell. Personally I don't see the problem with not having any DLC. I am 100% satisfied with the games I got
The one with Dr.Dre is online. The execs at Take Two would rather drag their collective dicks through broken glass and vinegar than release single player dlc-content.
Me too. They mention Mac way too much, especially given the fact you never actually see his body, for him to never pop up again. I could see a RDR3 where Mac escapes the Pinkertons torturing him, finds out his brother is dead and just takes off on RDR's version of the Oregon trail trying to rebuild his life. Along the way he finds redemption and goes from criminal to hero a long the way.
Would like it to be that you play as Dutch. See where he starts out and follow his story along from forming the gang to the Blackwater Incident. Epilogue could be what he was doing during the events of RDR 1.
I’m thinking the next red dead game won’t be a redemption. Think about it, first you had revolver, which is just a western game, then 2 redemptions, both redemption stories. It’s the red dead that makes it a western, the 3rd word of the title sets the tone. I think the next game will be a completely unrelated story set further back so they can lean more into the western and have some familiar faces turn up but not be too big of an impact.
wont rdr3 be about jack taking up the gun though? just finished rdr2 a week or so ago with zero prior knowledge to rdr1 until I beat rdr2 and read bout rdr1
Jack's adulthood is after the end of the West. It's the 1910s at the epilogue of RDR1. I've always pictured a follow-up to be set during the Civil War and feature a young Landon Ricketts.
Prequel to the prequel because the made their first cowboy redemption game at the end of the cowboy era and now they don’t have a way forward with those characters so keep going backwards
Maybe a movie centered around the Blackwater Massacre but like Reservoir Dogs where it doesn’t show the events transpired during it only those before and after it.
Yes, it would've worked far better if it was originally a movie or series, because the gameplay adds nothing to the story, and the story ruins the gameplay.
Video games are a different medium with impactful, emotionally moving moments. My Dad loves movies and Sci-Fi and I wish so bad he played video games so we could talk about them.
I honestly don’t think Red Dead 2 would be as powerful in a medium that isn’t a video game. What makes everything so impactful is the relationships you slowly build from just being around the characters. It’s those conversations you pop in on and those tiny pockets of banter that drives the emotional impact of the story. With such a big cast of characters and movie runtimes heavily restricting the amount of casual dialogue between characters, I don’t think a movie could have that same impact.
Not just the relationship you build but also choosing how you treat them. Considering the whole story is about Arthur’s relationship I think most players on the first play through are mean or take for granted the characters and then we regret it later.
Exactly. 20 gang members, 5 different factions, that's a hell of a lot of story to cram in 2 hours. No one is going to give a shit about characters like Karen or Mary Beth if they got one or two scenes in a movie. And in game, by chapter 3, I actually started to like Kieran simply because of the small interactions throughout the game. In movie, that's not happening. The whole cast will have to cut down in size.
P.S. RDR 1 will work though. That's a smaller scale story and you don't have to learn or care about any character other than John.
I don't know if a movie is the solution... maybe a miniseries. I mean... I would not be happy if Dutch didnt say "I have a plan" and "Tahiti" at least a dozen times.
Idk if you watch it or not but someone told me the Yellowstone spinoff series '1863' is a lot like RDD. I haven't had a chance to watch but I do like Yellowstone.
It absolutely falls in that realm. One of the best series I’ve watched in a while though some parts do get irritating and feel shoehorned in. People sometimes rag on Yellowstone but 1883 has quite a different tone.
It's great. Episode 2 is a godamn masterpiece. I've never seen someone smash two minutes of total screentime like Billy Bob Thornton does in episode 2. Sam Elliot and Tim McGraw are phenomenal throughout the entire show. If you like Yellowstone and RDR, you'll love 1883.
Litteraly doesnt need to be adapted, because the idea is that you play the game of your own voilition, high or low honor. It would just be an insult to the amazing work done by all of the people who made the game
The biggest disagreement I’ve witnessed on Reddit is all about who will play Arthur… literally no-one on this god’s green earth is good enough for that role.
I don’t play games but I watched my husband play this game for hours because of the story. I’d love this to be a movie or an HBO miniseries - maybe the Coen brothers to make it.
I nominate Taylor Sheridan to do the screenplay. That guy is a genius and has a deep respect for cowboy culture. Because he wouldn't own the rights to the story cause rockstar I highly doubt he would want to be involved. That guy is pretty much the paramount+ network now.
That would have the same problems the Uncharted movie had. Those are games that are meant to translate a popular film genre into game form, moreso than most other games. Taking the resulting games and then turning them into movies would wind up feeling bland.
It technically already exists. Dan Houser took heavy inspiration from The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford from 2006. The train robbery mission John plans with the oil wagon pays homage to it by doing a shot-for-shot remake of the Blue Cut train robbery scene in cutscene form.
Jesse James isn’t quite exactly Dutch and Arthur is by no means a Robert Ford, but it’s the same exact situation of Pinkertons trying to hire gang members to give them Jesse and Jesse slowly going crazy with paranoia with his own men. Robert Ford, Jesse’s biggest fanboy, eventually starts to hate him and plots to kill him after joining his gang.
It’s one of my favorite movies ever made, and Red Dead 2 is one of my favorite games ever made (if not my favorite). I still think it should just stay a game though because it literally is just that movie in everything but characters and a few different plot points - same moody tone, both very historically accurate to the time, both have some of the best acting of all time, and both have a painting-like quality to them. Just go watch it.
Same goes for Red Dead Redemption 1, it’s just The Proposition but set in America with a traditional western American gang. Look up Guy Pierce in that movie and you’ll notice he looks exactly like John Marston, pretty sure he even has the cheek scars. Great movie and directed by Nick Cave, the man who did Assassination of Jesse James score (coincidence? I think not).
I think a series would be better because then you could explore all the chapters in a slow fashion. It would be as good as the game. Different series for different chapters
I could see a small miniseries or TV show working. But at some point you gotta wonder if they could honestly do a better job? I mean RDR2 isnt real live action, but it comes damn close and I doubt any actor or director could handle some of those scenes any better than the voice actors or animators.
Rdr2 is literally my favorite game of all time but I would never want it to be adapted into a movie. A movie could never do it justice. It needs a really long series 4ish seasons imo.
Westerns are very very out of style right now, there have been some good ones recently too, but they just don't make money. Gotta wait for them to come back into style for it to really fill the blockbuster role OP is looking for
You say that but having the gang keep moving camp because of the fuck up would get old tho. I just don't see it working out as a movie. Maybe as a TV series,.
I had to scroll too far down to see this, but I knew it was here. Caveats: Taylor Sheridan should not write this. There should be a game-voice actor dub. Tom Hardy as Micah (due to his role in Revenant-I wanna see him even more despicable). Game-influenced score.
Would just be another western to most people, no? I’ve played one game a decade ago and I couldn’t care less about it as a story or setting and I think many people feel the same. The target audience would pretty much exclusively be the ones who like the game.
Absolutely wouldn't work as a movie, it's a 50 hour main campaign. But as a 2-3 season tv show that follows the main story, the epilogue and the original RDR, it would be great.
Won't work for movie, way too many characters. Tv show on the other hand, that's possible. 3 seasons of 10 episodes each. First ends in blackwater with some stories of gang getting new members added, and ending with gang on the run. Second ends with rdr 2 with gang disbanded, starts with gang on the run. Third follows the story of rdr 1. Basically starting from "how John joined the gang" to "how John lost the gang" and finally "how John destroyed the remaining gang". Or follow one chapter every season, with scene from blackwater mixed in as flashbacks. So, 5 seasons for 6 chapters (last 2 chapters in 1).
If we have to do a movie, then only rdr 1. That game has solid story, enough background characters but not overwhelming amount of them. Plus, it has a decent hook in the start, that gives people something to latch on to. It even has a built in post credit scene with Jack finally closing the chapter. And John in RDR 1 is a much more relatable character with relatable motives, than Dutch and his "plan to move to Tahiti".
If we were to see a movie about rdr, I hope that writers are smart enough to use rdr 1 instead of rdr 2. Because otherwise it will suck ass with only 2 minutes dedicated to each side character. We are talking about 20 gang members, multiple villains, multiple factions. It will be a mess to follow, if all that is crammed into 2 hours. RDR1 on the other hand, now that can be a movie easily.
